Hi Folks,

I was planning on making a werebear barbarian and stumbled across some Problems (no, not alignment ones, my DM doesn't like alignment restrictions, as long as our backround story is good).

First off, the level adjustment given in the MM seems to be +3 (link (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Werebear))
I assume this is for a natural lycanthrope (which would be fine).

Now the sample warrior in the table has 6 bonus HD from the werebear. How does this fit? Is the level adjustment just off scale?

Second thing is the Base Attack bonus given in the MM table.
+5/+6 BaB/Grapple seems quite high for a level 4 character. (This is without strength, since under Full Attack the melee weapon has +6, one more from his 13 str.)

How does this all fit with a +3 level adjustment template?

Is it just largely overpowered?

Cheers,
Farlion

Level adjustment and racial hit dice are counted separately, giving you a total ECL of LA+HD+class levels. In the case of a werebear, your effective character level will be 9+class levels.

They aren't bonus HD.

A lycanthrope has an ECL of 2(or 3) + HD of the animal form.

Thanks! I knew I was missing out on something.

In addition: would faster movement from the barbarian still be active in werebear form? Having 50ft movement speed would be rather cool.

P.S: I just found a template (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20031114a) without bonus hit die which would be alot more attractive. You can go into bear (up to 6 levels) but you don't have to. So you get to transform, but you don't get massive str bonus and stuff like that.

Werebears are were (brown) bears so they have 6 racial HD.
But you get: +2 Wis, +18 Str, +2 Dex, +4 Con. You are large.

If you want less: try a Were (black) bear they have 3 racial HD.
But you get: +2 Wis, +8 Str, +2 Dex, +4 Con. You are Meduim

You lose 10 Str, but also 3 HD.

Bearington Bearman the Bearbearian (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140757) deserves a mention.

Yeah, I found that thread, but I couldn't bear reading the whole thing

I'm still trying to find out if 3 levels of werebear template and then straight barbarian are something I can work with. I'd go for the whole rage feats (extra rage, endless rage, intimidating rage) and the power attack / leap attack combination.

Further question to this level progression template (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20031114a). Do I get any HD from the 3 levels of werebear template and if so, d8?

I'm somewhat fond of the hybrid form, and I don't think I get that as bear warrior, do I? (My complete warrior is not around at the moment)

Since I would fluff my bearbarian to turn into hybrid form every time he rages, it would be somewhat similar to the bearwarrior, but not quite the same.

Cheers,

A WereBear Bear Warrior could have both actually. Wereform augments your current form (which would be a bear if a Bear Warrior).

Or do you mean: Does a Bear Warrior have a hybrid form? Nope.
