Alya vs. Sote'


A towering figure in a dark robe enters the room where you have been milling around sizing up the competition. His face is completely obscured by his hood. He raises both hands to get your attention and speaks in a deep voice.
Alya, Sote'. You have been chosen to fight. Prepare yourselves! With that he brings his hands down and the two of you find yourself transported to the arena (http://excessivefreetime.org/arena/arena4.html)

OOC:
You've got time for one swift action and one standard action before you get transported in case you need to adopt a stance or activate an item.

On the map, green is open terrain, yellow is difficult terrain, red/brown is the cliffs (10ft, Climb DC20, blocks LoS). Arena has a 60 foot ceiling.

Opening post should have an initiative roll, anything you said after he called your name and what, if anything you did with the 'surprise round' before being transported. After that, start fighting in initiative order.

The beady-eyed, fox-like creature looks up from stroking the over-sized lion beside him and stares over at his new opposition, giving a quick salute before speaking an ancient word. His outline and then his whole body fades, and you see nothing more as the room fades and we both arrive in the arena.


Pre-battle Preparations:

I assume I see you? You don't initially, but do when a huge serpentine beast appears out of nowhere to Flyby Attack you with outstretched talons and teeth before swooping away and out of your sight (presumably).


End flight at B25, with a cliff blocking LoS.

OOC: You most likely do see her in A36-C38 given she's 15' tall which means she towers above the battlefield. However, Invisibility confers no benefit vs. Alya due to her having Blind-Fight; all attacks miss. Also, we've got a funny problem; we start in the same square (well, not the same but we overlap). Alya's starting square is A37, but given she's Huge, she's shunted to A36-C38. I do guess Alya gets further pushed to A35-C37 due to the overlap. Assuming Sote is Huge too (based on the "huge serpentine beast"-description), he'll get pushed to A38-C40.

EDIT: If Sote is Huge or larger, btw, I don't think he should be able to disappear unless he somehow reactivates the Ring of Invisibility. These cliffs are only 10' tall and thus too small to conceal creatures of such size. Either way, do tell me in which square Alya sees Sote going out-of-sight.

Good point about the size being too big to be concealed by the cliffs. Alya would see Sote' behind the B26 cliff, in that case. (B25, to be exact)

Also, that's really strange that the roller started us so close together. :smallsigh:

OOC: It was bound to happen sooner or later. May have to rethink the starting position assignment script. By the way, shouldn't Sote be way too big to fit between those two cliffs? I guess you could be on top of them or squeezing or something tho so it's no problem. Also, I assume you didn't provoke AoO for whatever reason.

Narrowly dodging Sote's blows, Alya quips: "My, my, quite good! Show me that once more!"

Eleanor ignores the lion and continues her sweep of the arena. Maintaining her altitude, she first finishes her movement to AF32-AH34, then continues to R32-T34 and finally she moves extraordinarily fast, ending up at R20-T22. Then she shoots for the corner of the arena, going to M26-O28.

OOC: This movement should cover pretty much all the rest of the map save for the starting area from K upwards. Does she locate Sote during this? She's currently at M26-O28 (15' up).

Sote' burrows up to ground level at S29 [move action], wildshapes into a Lesser Battlebriar [swift action], and charges Alya.

Well... Alya sees a lion-like creature made of writhing vines and thorns charging her from the south-east a moment before tries to grab her and impale her body upon its thorns. She also notices Sote's lion to the west of her, but I have to resolve this grapple attempt before the lion may or may not do anything.

OOC: Shouldn't initiating a grapple require a Touch Attack? I know of no means to start a Grapple without either hitting with an attack that has Improved Grab or doing a Touch Attack as per PHB-Grapple. I'm assuming that's a Charge you're doing?


Alya shifts her position ever-so-slightly and strives to push this new aberration right past her.

OOC: Roll a pure Strength-check opposed by:
[roll0] (Alya gets +4 for each category she's larger than you; if you're Large, +4 and if Medium, +8. If Huge, +0, if Gargantuan, no advantage)

If you lose, your charge ends up unable to make an attack and you move 2 squares to direction of my choice. If you win, you gain additional +2 on any attack made after charge.

OOC: Your Strength is 74? O.o Str-check should include nothing but your Strength-modifier; no BAB, no attack bonus, no nothing. Unless you have some sick source of Str-check bonuses of course... But all I can think of are Soulmelds which aren't game anyways.

Well, regardless, the attack will miss. Is it Alya's turn? Will the Dog do anything?

My unarmed strikes are +1 weapons DR-wise. The Slam/Slam/Bite is non-magical tho.


And the strand...it should be negative energy...I think. Eh, apply DR to it for now, just to be sure. Let's see about that later.

Unarmed strikes (the ones marked as "Attacks") are +1 (so "Magic" for purposes of overcoming DR), Slam/Slam/Bite are non-magical.

OOC: That's Greater Divine Surge. A level 8 maneuver from Devoted Spirit. As a Full-Round Action (something Belt of Battle so conveniently provides), Alya takes up to her Initiator Level in Constitution damage (her IL is 15 from full progression - 15 points; leaves her at 18) and adds +1 to hit and +2d8 to damage for each point with +6d8 base.

So yes, with her base +4d8 Unarmed Strikes, +6d8 maneuver and +30d8 from the Con-damage, that's the right number. I suppose that does it, then?

Thanks for the fight. If you're wondering about the 1d20+18, it's a "pseudo-reroll" for the Fort-save to see whether Alya woulda passed it on a reroll had numbers been any different.


By the way, few things I'm wondering now that I'm looking through the spoilers:
- How in the world did Sote charge as a standard action in the Briarhorn-form?
- How do you attack with multiple weapons and move? I don't see any source of Pounce in there.
- What form is that Lizard-form you're using? As a corollary, how high a DR does it have?
- You tried to Quivering Palm a mote of light?!
- How does Sote avoid AoOs? Looking at the sheet I don't see many Tumble-ranks...do you have something else to cover that?

Lion's Pounce wild feat... or at least that was what I intended to change the Spell Penetration feats to when I learned that I couldn't use spells to buff. Mythweavers must not have saved that edit because it has been going through a lot of changes lately, with the domain change and downtime and all. *sigh* I'll go fix that.

Yes. I figured it had to be Alya since she turned into it... and I figured I wouldn't lose any actions and it might work.
