View Full Version : Is there such a thing as "Magic Reduction"?

There's spell resistance, which means that a spell might simply not affect you at all.

There's damage reduction, which reduces damage from most kinds of attacks but takes full damage from spells and often from magic weapons.

But is there a kind of "magic reduction" that automatically reduces damage caused by magic? For example if you have Magic Reduction 5 and someone fires a Magic Missile or a Fireball at you, you'd ignore the first five damage. Or if someone attacks you with a magic weapon, you'd take normal damage from it as a masterwork weapon and reduce 5 from any additional damage its magical properties add.

Yes, there is. It's the capstone ability of Mage Slayer, a class that will eventually be written by someone.

Energy Resistance reduces magic damage if it is of a particular energy type.

There are a few obscure items which do something like that, but otherwise, no.

It makes sense really. Magic Reduction would be much less useful than Damage Reduction, because most spells don't do damage. Hence why they designed it as Spell Resistance instead.

It could be a formidable ability in an opponent that also has good saving throws however. Or imagine someone with DR and MR.

I've thought of building a Prestige Class like that, one of his most important feature was adding its AC to his SR.

His capstone added SR to any spells who didn't already have it(but gave a bonus to the enemy's check in that case).

Actually it's already the capstone on my PrC, The Impenetrable Warrior (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63011).

Energy Resistance exists for the plethora of spells that deal elemental damage. Force damage is meant to be difficult to resist, which is why it's not an element.

It's called hardness (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/exploration.htm#hardness).

Took the word right out of my mouth.

There's a Planar Touchstone site, Peak of Continuation, that gives something very similar to hardness 1 as the base ability.

I have no idea if it can be improved beyond that. (The higher-order ability gives a free resurrection the first time you go below -10 HPs.)

I'm pretty sure there is one or two monsters in 3.X that get reduced damage from magical attacks, but I can't find which one(s) at the moment...
