The air surrounding you fairly hums with the residue of magic, an aftereffect of the spell that brought you to this place. A quick glance reveals that you are in a small room, devoid of any life save for yourself. The sound of dripping water can be heard faintly, and the stone walls are slick with moisture. In complete defiance of logic, a torch is already lit, resting in a sconce near the room's single door.

Deja Vu. I feel I've been here before. NEDdie02 pulls out a sunrod, lights it and tucks it in his backpack with the lighted end out. With his longspear at the ready, he opens the door to look out and about, to see if it's as he recollects, or if his mind is playing tricks on him.

term1nally s1ck
2010-02-20, 04:13 PM
Outside the door, you can see a hallway extending 80' to the East, and a hallway to the south extending 30'.

To the East you see:
A North/South split after 10', a door on the North wall after 30', and a North/South split 60' away, and at the furthest reaches of the light, 80' away, there's a turn to the South, and a door on the Eastern wall.

To the South you see: A split to the East after 20', and a T-junction East/West at the end for the corridor, 30' away.

NEDdie02 checks this against his mental map. So far, so good. Let's see if that human with the vanishing beast is still there...

NEDdie02 heads south and takes that first east, going east and north until he's in front of the door (assuming it's still there). Let's see now, longspear at the ready, should be at the far right. Go after the human, and the beast might disappear...

He opens the door.

4||||B|H[/table]
There is a door at A-2, which you are just outside of, another at E-4, south side and another at E-3. There is a human wearing a chain shirt and holding a longsword standing behind a beast with patchy dark fur that covers its unhealthy shrunken black skin in some places. Open sores dot its hide and a feral, catlike head glances with it's blank eyes at the wall in front of it.

Initiative [roll0]

In the future, should I just roll the initiative as I open the door into a room? I just realized we can always ignore it if we don't need it, but it saves a post if it's needed and I lose the initiative.

If you want to, it'd speed things up slightly.

A wave of color washes over you, and the animal disappears. Make a will save.

Will save: [roll0]

VinGoodman
2010-02-20, 05:13 PM
(I think that WILL save made it)

Hmm, that was different. The last time, he just told me to leave, NEDdie02 thought as he drops his longspear, quickdraws the greatsword, and charges the human.

Attack [roll0] (BAB 1, STR 4, Charge 2)
Damage [roll1] (STR 2H 6)

Crit check (19-20/x2)
Attack [roll2] (BAB 1, STR 4, Charge 2)

AC14 until next round.

Some things I just thought of:
I think color spray is 15' range (cone from hand, for 15'?) Wouldn't he have to move a little (won't matter to much, hopefully)? Also, from where he is and where I am, if he emits a cone that hits outside the door, which of the three squares would it hit? (north of the door, at the door, south of the door)

term1nally s1ck
2010-02-20, 05:53 PM
He did move, sorry, I was hoping to get a post in after you made your will save. He's in D2 now.

He falls to your blade, however.

150XP, Chain Shirt, Longsword.

VinGoodman
2010-02-20, 06:29 PM
Ok, let's see now, he thought to himself as he removes his armor and puts the chain shirt on. Hmm, still a bit heavy, I'll have to remember to drop the backpack before I enter the next room, he thought (AC 17, light armor and load when that happens - however, this will be short-lived if he remembers correctly, and successfully retrieves, the chain mail. If it's ok with you, I'll wait to update the sheet until after I make that attempt).

Ok, now, where is that orc... NEDdie02 grabs the longspear and sheaths the greatsword, exits the east door, and proceeds north and east until he gets to the door facing south. He puts the backpack on the floor, inhales deeply, and opens the door.

Hmm, this should hopefully work again...NEDdie02 drops the longspear, quickdraws the greatsword, and charges at the orc.

This is definitely a strange state to be in. Ok, let's try the following:

I stand up (move action),
quick draws a spear (free still?),
and thows it at...d1? (standard action)
I finish with drawing a second spear (free)

assuming I luck into the right direction...
total concealment (1 hit) [roll0]

Another Ray of Frost:

[roll0] Ranged touch attack.

VinGoodman
2010-02-20, 11:06 PM
Well, I am now eternally grateful for lesser vigor. I charge him, attacking with the spear two-handed:

VinGoodman
2010-02-20, 11:13 PM
I'm probably pushing my luck, but I'm thinking it's time to go after the orc again

I wait to recover to full strength, while gathering my stuff and putting on the chain shirt. I leave the longsword and the hide armor here. Going out the east door and north and east to that door, I open it with backpack on the ground and longspear at the ready, expecting to see that ugly orc I dreamt killed me in a previous incarnation...

VinGoodman
2010-02-20, 11:46 PM
NEDdie02 drags that equipment into the orc room, and stays with the chain shirt (I just realized chainmail has only max dex bonus of 2). He keeps the goggles in the backpack. It's time to go after that kobold.

I go back out the door north, then east, north and east to the door. Along the way, I grab the blue note if it's still there (what does it say this time? is it still telling me to burn it in time of need?). I set down the longspear (it's just not working right now...), wield the greatsword, and open the door...

Well, the problem is two-fold.

One, Terminally is infinitely more vicious with his use of color spray than I am. I give people a round to move up or run away before unleashing the unfairness.

Two, you just can't seem to roll above a five when it matters. :smalltongue:

Last try with this build and gear, honest. And thanks for your patience (although you might be enjoying the Homer moment here...)

Let's see, basically, he has to win 2 rolls to have a chance...

initiative [roll0]
will save (just in case) [roll1]

Please let one be high enough.

There were times tonight where I wanted to check if I might actually using a 5 sided die! It looks like I might have a chance this time, though.

Opening the door reveals the following room:
{table]|A_|B_|C_|D_|E_
1|||||
2|||||
3|||||
4||||B|H[/table]
Initiative:[roll0]

To be fair, I had theterran as a DM, who had this guy use color spray in a surprise round...I'm not being that mean :smalltongue:

Plus, he is sitting in the corner, where you can pin him so he can't 5' and cast easily..

I will definite concede the point that I have him at a disadvantage becase I can corner him. Now, let's see, if I melee, I can get two attacks before the will save. So, one of the three rolls has to succeed. Here we go (drop the longspear, grab the greatsword, move to D2 and swing):

attack [roll0]
damage [roll1]

AOO:
attack [roll2]
damage [roll3]

WILL save: [roll4]

Ok, I just need one of the attacks or the save to come through here...

(Hope you will overlook that typo - I meant D3. If not, I suppose he's out one color spray)

This is sickening...I don't need all three to succeed! I just need one. Sheesh.

Your first swing downs him.

Ok, now let's think this through. I've got the chain shirt, and can go after the orc, the lizard, the kobold, or the claw guy. Let's try the orc with a slightly different tactic (if I win the initiative here...).

I head out east, north, east to that orc room. With the longspear handy, I open the door (and hope I win the initiative: [roll0])

Wow...that is...sick. Ok, back to the drawing board for me. Can't take on the brutes like this. There must be something I'm overlooking here. I may be back shortly, but only if I can improve my chances (although I would guess it's hard to beat that kind of crit with most normal-ish builds).:smallfrown:

Stack miss chances.

Take the Abrupt Jaunt ACF on a wizard.

Play a Warlock//X, with the Darkness invocation and the Blend Into Shadows feat for a poor-man's Hide in Plain Sight.

Just some defensive suggestions.

My favourite option for a more normal character is interesting uses of readied actions. I beat this guy with Android 2 by readying actions involving 5' steps, so my char got off about 5 attacks, and he only managed 1 normal attack, and 1 javelin throw.

VinGoodman

I thought about that, but can you ready an action before opening the door to an encounter? Isn't that a bit like giving yourself a winning initiative everytime? I still have to survive the first attack, it seems.

Any action you take after readying an action stops you having it readied.

If you found a way to get someone/something else to open a door, then you might be on to something...

VinGoodman

Is it that simple? I mean, can I just have my unseen servant open doors for me while I have a readied action? I might be ready to start again...let me swap out some spells first (2 first level unseen servants, coming up). Mind if I give it a try, just to see what it feels like?

Unfoortunately, getting your unseen servant to do anything is an action..

Ah, that's a shame...ok, back to the drawing board for me still. I'm not giving up, though. I'll be back!
