I'm not very abjuration/divination savvy, but I'd like a major villain's lair to be well defended in a similar way to Dorukan's Cloister spell without using homebrew. What spells/effects are useful?

Anything can be done with epic spellcasting. ANYTHING CAN BE DONE WITH EPIC SPELLCASTING. I LIKE CAPITAL LETTERS!

1: That spell is an Epic spell. It can be created by RAW (http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/epicSpells.htm).
2: No matter what, if Epic spells are involved they will be Home Brew unless they are directly printed in the ELH, Sandstorm, Frostburn, or Stormwrack.

What similar effects are available before epic spellcasting?

Guards and Wards (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/guardsAndWards.htm) and Dimensional Lock (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/dimensionalLock.htm) are good places to start. Sadly, Dimension Lock has a pretty puny area compared to a building or a town.

There are other sources for them, btw. More than a few Faerun books include several Epic spells. Champions of Ruin has several, as does Dragons of Faerun, and Lost Empires of Faerun too. Oh, and LEoF includes the Mythal seed.

Did we forget my policy on FR? FR is broken, Epic is broken, Epic FR is therefore Broken Squared.

Epic versions have been discussed before. See for example Gitman00's versions (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139174) which use the epic rules quite closely. This is about as RAW as you are going to get for it.

What does the Mythal seed do?

Mage's private sanctum (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/magesPrivateSanctum.htm) and forbiddance (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/forbiddance.htm) together pretty much replicate cloister's effects, albeit over a much smaller area.

What does the Mythal seed do?

Allows you to make sub-epic spells function over a huge area permanently, or block spells (with varying degrees of specificity), or a couple of other things.

Casting a Mythal that blocks divination, conjuration (calling), and conjuration (teleportation) would be very close to what Cloister does.

Area isn't a problem for my purposes, luckily. Private Sanctum and Forbiddance will do perfectly, and Guards and Wards with a Dancing Lights effect will let me make a fun puzzle. Thanks!
