View Full Version : Any source for lots of minor NPCs?

I'd like to know if there's a source that has lots of minor NPCs statted out. I'm not talking major ones. I mean lots of sensible level 1-5 NPC class builds with very little story if any, or maybe a minor personality trait. For all the random commoners, experts, nobility, etc. the party may meet.

If not, I think I may convert this thread into a 1001 NPC type thread.

In Cityscape, pages 113-118, there's a slew of NPC stat blocks, ranging from CR½ to CR10.

Mythweavers has fine commoners but the other NPC classes are a bit lacking. Mainly in skills and equipment. I'm looking for NPCs that are ready out of the box, so to speak. Cityscape sounds like it may be good. Does it include skills and equipment? Minor low level NPCs with NPC classes?

Most are NPC classes, but there are a few fighters and rogues, along with some actually named and well-leveled NPC villains.

With the possible exception of the summoner guy, who's so spec-ed for combat that he can't actually do the political shennanegins in his description without GM caveat.

The Symbol's damn cool though.

They're mostly decently put together. Not well optimized, obviously, but decent enough to be worth a shake in a scrap.

Yeah, the Summoner wasn't a great one though. :smallsigh:

If you don't mind 3rd party books, there is "Everyone Else" which has stats for all sorts of NPCs. Basically, it is 70 pages of any NPC you'll ever need "from farmers to bartenders to the prince's seneshal." The text is ALL open gaming content so I can post a sample here if you'd like.

Generally, they don't need much in the way of stats, I just assume they have max ranks+ 1(Ability score mod) in whichever skills make sense for them to have. Blacksmiths have it in Profession (Blacksmith) and Craft (Metal). Merchants have Appraise, Prof (Merchant), Sense Motive, and Diplomacy.

This one sounds tempting, but NPCs like "tax collector" sound a bit too specific. As in things I'd rather make myself before the session while not fitting random things PCs ask about that I hadn't planned for.

Have you tried it? Have you found every NPC you were looking for on the fly? Am I worrying too much? EDIT: Oh, duh, that's what reviews are for. Everyone is saying even when they can't find the right NPC they can usually find a similar one. Okay, I may go with this. Thanks!

I was a little bit put off with the fact that the writers [like Ubisoft] don't seem to grasp the difference between a courtesan and a prostitute [the courtesans are so widely trained that they'd need to be experts] but the rest of it looks alright.

This should be in the section "Roleplaying."

Eh, probably. The original plan was to say "That's it? Okay, let's make some NPCs." Probably should have just made it 2 threads in 2 sections if that happened.

also, any source for a reallly reallllly detailed cities?
something big and city-like smack dab in the middle of an island that is fairly war torn but has some nice villages, and with npcs from the city statted out?

Only I have for that right now is: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/DMG_WENH.zip

But I dunno how good it is. For one, the number of people with NPC classes in the DMG is half the amount given in the above link, and the number of people with PC classes is 1/4th the amount given in the above link. So that's one thing to adjust already. I also have a copy of nation builder I haven't looked at yet.

CLC -- any sources for cities and such are going to be in the campaign settings. Pick a city from a place like the Forgotten Realms, change the names and there you go. If you want an official WotC book, pick up something like City of Splendors: Waterdeep , set in the Forgotten Realms or Cityscape, which is generic.

Mulletmanalive--I think they were trying to avoid using the word "prostitute" as much as possible to keep it PG 13. While courtesans are usually better educated than your average streetwalker, they still aren't considered respectable in most societies. However, if you really want to pick some nits, blow the dusty of that 1st Edition DMG by E.G.G. and find his unintentionally humorous chart on types of prostitutes. Brazen strumpet is my favorite.
