View Full Version : How many spell/psionic lower speed?

I was reading PHB 2 and came across: Call of Stone

So if we reduce speed to 0, we can statue something (spell slowly does it, lowering speed by 10 penalty, but that would take at least 3 rounds).

I know Slow 1/2's speed.
Entangling Ectoplasm 1/2's speed.
Decelerate 1/2's speed.

Any others?

Halt makes them come to just that, a dead halt :)

Anything that forces a balance check (like Grease) also lowers speed.

"A successful check lets you move at half your speed along the surface for 1 round." (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/Balance.htm)

Those don't lower your speed, they just makes you move slower. I'm pretty sure there's a difference.

No, I think they're different in the rule set. So moving slower isn't the same thing as actually changing your speed. I don't know what the spell in the OP does, though.

And what's with the snark?

Being forced to stop doesn't actually change your move speed, and arguably Grease doesn't either. Slow and the rest would work, but halving something never makes it 0.

I don't think it's an important enough distinction to warrant correction - especially since the only thing that actually statues the creatures (to use the OP's terminology) is failing the fort saves, not being reduced to 0 speed.

I suppose I could have just outright said I thought you were splitting hairs (and still do.)

Ah. I see.

Most discussions of RAW are hairsplitting exercises.

Armor Lock from CS reduces speed to 10 feet, but only if the creature wears armor.
