View Full Version : An Abnormal Adventure - An OotS-style interactive comic

Welcome to An Abnormal Adventure, an interactive webcomic.

[B]How this comic works:
Essentially, this comic follows a single main character--that you choose, see below--whose actions are controlled by the audience. After every update, you are given the opportunity to post what it is you want the character to do at that point in time. If I choose to use your command, then the next update will feature the character performing this action. I choose which command to use pretty much by how entertaining I find it/how useful it is. Do note, however, that the number of people that want to take a certain course of action does have an affect on how likely I am to choose that action.

Now onto the comic:

First, you must select your character. (Note that this is one option I will choose based on how many votes each character gets. Otherwise it would be pretty pointless.) You have five options:

John Steele, cybernetic assassin.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/SinisterPenguin/cyborg.png

Nigo Mulark, wandering swordsman.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/SinisterPenguin/swordsman2.png

Leepha Bazar, champion of the gods.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/SinisterPenguin/champion.png

Dave Lawson, mildly insane scientist.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/SinisterPenguin/scientist.png

And finally, Blue, anthropomorphic personification of the color blue.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/SinisterPenguin/blue.png

Who will you choose?

I would like to know slightly more about them. I am sorta torn between Dave Lawson, mildly insane scientist or the personification of of the colour blue. I do want to know hoe blue can be a personality, although now that I think about it it's probably just being sad (being so blue, getting the blues).

So right now I'm thinking of Dave since I don't really like angsty characters.

Another vote for Dave Lawson, mildly insane scientist. I was tempted by Blue, but while playing as a Hooloovoo might be interesting, I think an insane character is more suited to having his actions controlled by an assorted conglomerate of internet denizens. :smalltongue:

Alright, then. The votes have been counted. Dave is the winner. Now...let's begin!

http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/SinisterPenguin/aaa1.png

Your name is Dave Lawson. You are a mildly insane scientist. Not a mad scientist, mind you, just mildly insane. It's something of a sore point.

Currently you are inside your laboratory. Surrounding you are various experiments, including your currently broken robot assistant, Boxer, a Transmogrifier, a piece of scrap metal, various chemicals, and a Quantum Thing. Nearby is a door. At this moment in time your are contemplating life. You are not entirely sure why.

What will you do?

Green-Shirt Q
2010-03-10, 07:39 PM
What will I do?

I would try to fix my robot assistant, I suppose. Then, I would recieve a call to go on an adventure, something that needs to be done. An epic adventure with great storytelling. Maybe Dave's girlfriend has been kidnapped by aliens needed Dave to rescue her I dunno.

Yeah, I'm not particularly sure that just throwing us a protagonist, a few objects and the question of WHAT WOULD YOU DO is the best way to tell a story, but we'll do it your way, I suppose.

Interactive comics tend to work that way.

Anyway, you're lab is insufficient. Fixing your robot assistant would be a good start, but you need a big board on which you can scribble equations, some beeping computers, and some bubbling chemicals.

Also, a Tesla Coil or two, just because.

Interactive comics tend to work that way.

Which is why, in my opinion, most interactive comics FAIL!

Someday or another I'll have to make one to show everybody just how an interactive comic SHOULD be done!

But not any time soon. I'm too busy, and have too many fancomics on the go.

Then again, my upcoming comic, Peach's Castle, could hypothetically be interactive...

I'll have to ponder that.

Because you're progressing through the archives there. The actions the characters take (Any time you see something that isn't an arrow) were viewer imputed.

Seriously, how else do you imagine an Interactive Comic would work? (Besides A Choose Your Own adventure style thing)

The commands are all taken from a "Suggestion Box" in which the viewers input their suggestions. Hussie then chooses one and uses it.

Also MS Paint Adventures is seriously the best webcomic and is what inspired this (if that wasn't obvious already).

You are missing the point by far.

The thing about Interactive comics isn't the plot it self, but making the readers feel like they are actually a part of that. They should develop the plot by making weird choices, like using underwear like a hat during an date or something.

If you say so.

I suppose I shouldn't try and argue, but it's still my preference for a comic to be either gags or story. If I wanted to see a protaginist do random crap I want them to do, I would just write and draw it myself.

That's cuz you ARE a comic author ¬¬

Most of people ain't.

It's like Guitar Hero... You want to play guitar but you don't know how and don't really want to learn.

Interactive Comics allow people that don't want to bother make a comic to feel like they are part of the team that makes one.

Hmm. The the Transmogrifier is evidently having an adverse affect on your brain functions. Ensure it is switched off, with force if necessary, and resume feeling stylish and genteel.

[Will get to the "fix Boxer" command that seems to be the general consensus soon.]
Perhaps run a general diagnostic on the little fellow. Alternatively, open the access panel on his back and shove the Quantum Thing inside, connecting random wires to it as necessary. That oughta do the trick.

You open Boxer's access panel and place the Quantum Thing inside, then connect some random wires to it.

You are not entirely sure what the Quantum Thing does, exactly. Your memories of actually making it are somewhat hazy. But hey, you put "quantum" in the name so it has to do something useful, right--

Of course we did! Just now, when we wired the Quantum Thing into what I shall now call Quantum Boxer. The Transmogrifier must be having an adverse affect. First it alters our sense of style, now it causes us to forget what we did just did.
Still, we shouldn't take it off quite yet. It is so very dapper.

Now, with Quantum Boxer fully functional, we are ready for whatever life may throw at us. Open the door!

Invent a device that will control people like a remote on their personalities. I.E. Flip through different emotions or turn them off and make them fall asleep, etc. etc.

Finally, our mild insanity is gaining the recognition it deserves! Or is it our scientist-ness‽ I forget.

Anyway, I propose a more exciting plan of action. Inventing stuff is time consuming, we should steal some inventions from our fellow rival scientists!
Quick, rack your brain! What other mildly insane scientists do we know of? Preferably ones with recent, unpublished inventions and poor laboratory security.

Take a survey of the local population to see what people would like to have invented, then invent that stuff.

I concur, or whatever fancy word means 'agree' :smalltongue:'

Built the emoticon to control people's emotions, then lose it when a superhero's sidekick mistakes it for their communicator!

Hm. You know of at least 3 other mildly insane scientists in Zephyr City alone:

1. Dr. Chang of the Shadow District.

2. Dr. Slightly Crazy of Semi-Nutso District.

3. And Overlord Kaziel of the Administrative District.

Chang and Slightly Crazy have fairly low security, from what you've seen. Kaziel, on the other hand...

You...you probably don't want to mess with the Overlord of Zephyr City.

You always pick Keris's!

Think of wich one you hate more, and send Boxer and Bird Boxer to spy for weaknesses in defense.

Dr.Chang may know kung-fu.
So go and spy on Dr. Slightly Crazy

Ah yes, I have a new idea.

Fuse some beatles and some more scrap metal to from robobeatles. Send them into SlightlyCrazy's lab to spy.

Flop around like a fish for 3.297 minutes and send the the boxers to spy on whichever Dr. you end up facing towards.

Consider the most recent inventions you've made and try and figure out if there is a way to guarantee that at the convention you will be crowned as the Annual Mildly Insane Scientist's, Annual Mildly Insane Scientist of Importance Award.
Possibly by "removing the competition"

You flop around like a fish for exactly 3.297 seconds. Exactly.

You end up facing North, the direction Dr. Chang's lab.

Your fish-flopping escapades have granted you a one-point increase in the Skill Fishy Decision-Making. You can now make decisions slightly more like a fish.

You'd do a victory dance or something but all that flopping made you kind of dizzy.

You open up the Science! tab. You are quite sure that exclamation mark has always been there. Quite. Sure.

Science! splits into three skillsets: plain, boring Science, Mildly Insane Science, your specialty, and the hallowed grounds of Mad Science itself. All of these can be opened to view their skills, aside from Mad Science. Mad Science is a Legendary Skillset, meaning that it requires all the other skills in the other skillsets to be completely leveled-up before it can be Unlocked.

First up is the field of Necrology, which you tried once or twice but then decided it was sort of creepy. Next you have Xenopsychology, which you would like to try your hand at but you've never met an alien, much less an alien with mental problems. You're fairly skilled at Roboteering. You're pretty alright at Alchemy.

You scroll down to view the remaining skills.

http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/SinisterPenguin/aaa16.png

You sort of avoid the field of Thermobioastrosociology, because you're not actually sure what its about. And finally, there is the endlessly vague field of Quantum Stuff.

[And now we have the introduction of animated GIFs! Because really I can't rip off MS Paint Adventures enough.

I dunno what the deal is with the lights on the Transmogrifier and the weird..."crawling" lines on the goggles. Or the changing color of the goggle's lenses...though that one actually looks sort of cool. Anybody know how to fix those?]

Anyway you decide it's time to quit screwing around and...

...Yeah.

http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/SinisterPenguin/aaa18.png

You decide to send Birdboxer off to spy on Dr. Chang. You brief him on his mission and send him on his way.

http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/SinisterPenguin/aaa19.png

You head over to your Viewing Monitor to view the live feed of Birdboxer's spying escapades.

Let me just explain what Quantum Physics is. It is the stuff that makes scientists curl up on their beds and suck their thumbs. Thanks to Quantum Physics, a cat can be dead and alive at the same time, you can put your head in front of a gun and it will never fire (From your perspective) and anything can happen anywhere at any time for any reason whatsoever. And the Quantum Thing gave Boxer the ability to fly! So, let's see if the honourable Dr.Chang has any files on Quantum Stuff.
