Considering the options for a character that wants to specialise in traps (disarming and setting), what options are out there for the budding trap-master?

I know of the Combat Trapsmith and that other 5 level trappy PrC (I forget the name right now), but can't really decide which would be better, or which to take first...both seem to pale slightly at higher levels (10+) by comparison to their relative abilities at lower levels.

Scout and/or Rogue are both obvious choices as an initial class, but what about Feats, Race and such? Any suggestions?

Just for flavor if nothing else, how about being a Kobold? They do, I believe, get a +2 racial bonus on crafting traps...

There's a 1st level spell in Races of the Dragon called Create Trap. Does exactly what it says on the tin, but is limited to CR 1 traps. Using the Spell Research rules, it's possible to create higher level versions of it that do bigger traps (up to a CR 15 Trap at Create Trap Level 9, which puts it on par with Summon Monster 9).

And to search checks. Oddly enough, an unmodified kobold is the best at something for a build.

I asked a similar question recently, so I will link my thread here.

I definately vote for Kobold, and I think Factotum is a good base class to use (since you need Trapfinding). You can even use the spell-like abilities to pick up Create Trap.

A funny thing you can do with a build that creates traps in combat is take the feat in PHB2 that forces your opponents to attack nearby characters if you are not presenting a threat...which, under the rules, creating a trap does not count for :smallcool:
