The morning dew still lingers on the grass surrounding camp, the fire finally roaring as the group gathers round to prepare breakfast. The coffee, in the fire as soon as there was flame, comes out now, and mugs are poured. Jeffery Sales, a merchant Webbet was traveling with, hands out the cups. Soon, the sight of pancakes is unmistakable. This morning, they're blueberry pancakes, as Typhon was lucky in his scavenging trips the night prior, when the others set camp.

The meal is a pleasant one, and as the stomachs full, empty mouths turn instead to conversation to fill the morning, waiting for the sun to fully break the trees before breaking camp. "So, friends, you've been a fine company these past few days. I'm glad to have such stout escorts near with all the rumors I've heard of late. Talk of goblins bandits is enough to cause me shivers. It ain't right, takin what a man's worked hard, just so hard, to earn for himself." Having worked himself into a fluster, Jeffery gets up from the circle by the campfire and goes to inspect his merchandise, which overloads a wagon by the side of the camp. Even an untrained eye can see that his pony is unduly taxed by the burden, and no one is surprised to see that even Jefferey walks during their travels.

Ladios

The half-elf finishes his breakfast with a satisfying belch. He did enjoy a good breakfast to start out the day. Blueberry pancakes.

"We'll be there soon, won't we?" Ladios asked, but not to anyone in particular. His emerald eyes touched on Typhon for a second, if for no other reason than Typhon usually knew what was going on more often than not.

He did watch the young merchant they were with say his last words and leave. A twinge of something came just then, not quite empathy. He paused, searching his feelings. What had that been?

Pity?

Yes, perhaps. Some sad and small emotion like that. This poor guy got choked up over a cart filled with books. Pages that had little more than ideas. He had thought several times how wonderful it would have been to have goblins raid them... thinking the overloaded cart would carry vast supplies, and discover only books.

If Ladios were not dead at that point, he would laugh maniacally.

Still, the true ironic part is that those books would probably be able to help the goblins more than shovels or hammers or swords ever could. Knowledge... knowledge was everything.

"A wise man once said," He spoke aloud, "Teach a man how to make fire and he's warm for a day... but set a man on fire..."

He smiled at that. Until he realised he spoke aloud. He sometimes had trailing thoughts that ended up being spoken aloud.

"Anyway," He stood up, gathering his things, "We about ready to head out for the day?"

Brennan

Brennan enjoyed the breakfast, as he had the previous days. Pancakes were something of a treat for him, and getting them day after day was a great pleasure. He'd have to watch himself though. It was awful hard to climb through upper story windows or run from the authorities with a heavy paunch. Perhaps some exercise of some sort was in order.

He pulled 3 rubber balls out of a pouch and began juggling them. He had once seen a troubadour do this and had been practicing ever since. He was getting pretty good at it now, unless something broke his concentration.

"...ain't right, takin what a man's worked hard, just so hard, to earn for himself." That did it! The balls bounced off of each other and then scattered over the ground they had made camp on. One nearly ended up in the fire.

Amid gales of laughter from his traveling companions, Brennan scampered around and picked up his toys. "Sorry, sorry," he said repeatedly. He liked this crew well enough, even the merchant who was so worries about his cargo. He was a good enough sort. Not the kind of man Brennan would rob ... unless the Guildmasters insisted.

Hearing Ladios' words, he replied "I hope we are there soon. This walking is killing my feet. I should have bought a better pair of boots before coming." Looking down at his ratty footwear, he sighed. He should have bought new boots anyways, but the Coopers's house had burnt down and they were left with nothing but a few tools that they had managed - on risk or being burnt alive - to save from the shop. So almost all of the gold from Brennan's last haul had been left in a cloth bag upon their doorstep before he left.

"As for being ready, I suppose now is as good a time as any." Rolling up his bedroll and attaching it to his pack, he began his usual pre-job checklist. Patting various places here and there, he made sure that his tools and knives were in place.

"That was a terrific breakfast, by the way. Makes a halfling happy to have good food inside before heading out on an adventure."

Kadar

He had ridden for days, long since the point of exhaustion of the lesser men of the lowlands. Day and night the red star had burned on the horizon, a great ember of celestial portent that drew Kadar as a magnet draws iron. Two days earlier, his horse had begun to flag, and now he felt the end nearing. It was a noble beast, a gift by the leader of his clan, but even the majestic horses of Ull could not withstand the demands of a man possessed.

As the sun began to rise on the horizon though, something changed in the red star. Where once it had hung tortuously far, now the star began to drift, at first slowly, but then faster and faster. Riding north, Kadar saw it swing and spiral to the east. With eyes wide in horror, he saw the object of his destiny fall to the earth and strike the horizon in a flash of bloody portent. At that moment, a cry escaped Kadar's lips, a hoarse scream that echoed through the still morning air with no one to hear. Dismounting, he stumbled towards the last sight of the star and fell to his knees. As he sat still as a granite statue, his horse stumbled behind him and collapsed, dead. through glazed eyes, Kadar contemplated death, until he saw something on the horizon - the smoke of a cooking fire. Slowly, clarity returned to those globes of iron grey and he stood and turned. With a sigh, he drew his great sword and decapitated his faithful steed before striding off into the distance, approaching the unsuspecting camp with a grim determination.

Typhon the Damned

Typhon's eyes reflected the flames of the fire. His red eyes burned, both with reflected light and an inner glow, a simmering like angry embers. His ruddy red skin seemed less abnormal in the softer morning light. His stubby black horns were impossible to ignore, however, and his gnarled, black claw-like fingernails were plain to see in the absence of his lobstered gauntlets. Although he tries to eat discreetly, his freakish, greenish, forked tongue is a mighty distraction to the observant.

The food was almost tasteless on his tongue. The heat of the fire was dulled, the air still, unmoving. The conversation and laughter of his companions seemed muted. His eyes were miles away, staring deep into the fire. For a moment, he could think only of the fire that awaited him. The flames that waited to embrace him should he fail.

Was escorting a merchant a task worthy of heroism? Was it a cause worthy enough to scour his name from the list of souls doomed to Hell? The taste of bile crept into the back of his throat at the thought.

Although it was unusual for a group of people to so readily accept his presence among them, Typhon knew all too soon that he would need to leave them in pursuit of a nobler cause. A deadlier cause. In many ways, martyrdom was his only hope. He whispered a prayer to the Tortured God under his breath before standing and strapping on his gauntlets once more.

As the sun rose higher in the sky, he decided it was time to conceal his face. Typhon wrapped his head carefully in a plain woolen scarf, and carefully placed his helm on afterward. Aside from his glowing eyes, he might pass as a normal person.

Strapping on his sword belt, he glanced down the road a ways. He thought he saw someone walking up alone. He grumbled, half to his companions, half to himself, in a low, gravely voice. "Traffic on the road early..."

Webbet stays silent while he eats his breakfast, his doesn't like to talk while eating, multi-tasking was never really his thing. While the pancakes were pretty decent, Webbet wanted nothing more than a soft comfortable bed, a little ironic seeing as how they had just started the day. After listening to Ladios, Webbet could not help but give a little smirk, trying to ignore this small hint of psychopathy, he turns to Brennan, "Say, could you let me take a look at the balls for awhile?" There was nothing that Webbet would not be interested about, the books in the library he worked for had much information, but nothing beat the real world, that's why he always savoured the chance to be away from the books and this yearly traveling. But now with the threat of the goblins, Webbet doesn't know for sure what will happen next, or what path he'll be taking. Oh well, he'll have to deal with the most immediate problem first, that is to defeat the goblins first, and he'll see what else needs to be done.

Kadar

Dew covered grass fell silently beneath Kadar's feet as he crested the ridge surrounding the small encampment. Taking the sight in at a glance, he snorted softly. They had posted no sentries, erected no defenses. Were he accompanied by his brothers they could have swept down and slaughtered the lot of them where they stood. Yet, the red star had fallen upon their camp, and thus Kadar was bound by fate to see what they were about. With a nimble hop he landed on the downward slope of the ridge and slid down, making sure to keep his hands distant from his weapons.

As the rest of the party goes about its duties, they see a strange sight. Appearing as if from nowhere is a man, almost inhumanly large, wearing oiled dark chain and armed with bow, shortsword, and greatsword. His tabard is marked with an alien array of stars, and his stance marks him as a warrior of some skill. As he lands in the dell of the encampment, he addresses you in a deep baritone.

"Greetings. Who are you that travel the roads of the wilderness?"

Brennan

The halfling tossed one of the rubber balls to the scholar, giving him ample lead time to catch it, before tossing him the other two. He had learned the hard way not to assume that people could catch things tossed casually at them, the way he normally could. Last time it had nearly cost a poor girl her fingers on her left hand.

Shading his eyes against the rising sun, he caught a glimpse of a figure moving towards them. He was about to speak when the figure addressed the group.

The closest thing to a sentry the camp had was Typhon, always on the alert. As the stranger stepped forward, he was there to greet him. Kadar sees a man clad in travel-worn chainmail and leather, with a scarf wrapped around his head beneath a steel barbute helm. A longsword and short sword can be seen sheathed in his belt, and a quiver of javelins and a flail are secured on his back. He raises a gauntleted hand in greeting.
"Hail traveler. We were just breaking camp. If you are headed to Barrow's Edge, I'm sure you are more than welcome to join us. My name is Typhon. I am but a guard for this humble caravan."
His voice is parched and gravely, as if he has not had a drink of water in a long time. It is impossible not to notice his strange, red eyes, that burn from an opening in the scarf wrapped around his head. They have no whites: aside from his black, almost reptilian pupils, his eyes are entirely blood red, and almost luminescent.

“Well, aren’t you a strange one?” Ladios said. He cocked his head to one side, examining the new stranger. There was something about him, wasn’t there? A sense of… what was it? Not danger, exactly, excitement? Ladios didn’t know.

With the rumors of goblin hordes running around, Ladios did not expect to see anyone wandering around here by themselves. This man looked like he could fight-

No, scratch that, this man looked like he wanted to fight. There was a difference between the two.

“My name is Ladios, a wandering minstrel… of sorts, we certainly would enjoy it if you came with us. Surely if you’ve made it this far you know of the goblins wandering around here. It is better to stick together.”

He walked to the other side of the new stranger, and looked at Typon from across this guy’s broad shoulders. A large and mischevious smile came to Ladios’ face.

It was a smile that said… “Can we keep him?”

“Would you like some blueberry pancakes? Otherwise we can just head off. I think everyone’s ready for the morning trek.”

Kadar's eyes narrowed as the small half elf. He was unaccustomed to being examined like some from of cattle. Still, it would not do to spill his blood before learning more about this group. Turning his attention away from Ladios, Kadar addresses Typhon.

"You do well to keep alert. I passed several homesteads burned to the ground on my way here, though the beasts were wise enough to ignore me. I would be willing to travel with you, though I question your collective wisdom when you take the time for pancakes in the goblin infested wilderness. Who is the leader of this caravan?"

Typhon nods, a firm frown concealed beneath his scarf.
"In times such as these, the only way some can cope is with simple comforts, sir. If you would not break your fast with us, that is not for me to judge, but I would ask your name. Should you wish to speak with a leader, I'd speak with either Sales or Webbet."
He points to the merchant and the archivist, but never lets the stranger out of his sight.

Webbet was too engaged with the balls to notice Kadar at first, but once he started talking, Webbet notices his presence, and waits for awhile, allowing the rest to continue with their small talk with the man, before introducing himself. "Hey, I'm Webbet, glad to meet you, let me just say that we have a pretty good idea of what's going on, and we do indeed know the risks involved with regards to traveling through to the suburban areas with what's been going on for the past few weeks. But one can never go wrong with good food, especially if the said group would be attempting to counter the goblin threat. I'd say it'll increase our chances greatly with an extra member in the team, so if no one else vehemently objects, I'd say, welcome aboard."

All this was said in a rather optimistic tone, whether justified or not, only time would tell.

As Webbet approached and began speaking, Kadar wondered anew at the wisdom of the crimson star. Could this rag tag bunch truly think itself capable of countering the apparently vicious goblin threat? Apparently so, and Kadar knew better than to question the portents of the stars. With that slow acceptance, Kadar relaxed slightly, and answered the questions of these strange folk.

"I am Kadar. I thank you for your welcome, and for your willingness to let a stranger share your fire. If you are seeking to defeat the goblins plaguing this region, I would be more than willing to travel with you."

Travel negotiations are wrapped up and gear is packed. Ladios, despite his lack of understanding of why the merchant values his possessions, stands close to it as they travel, to ensure no harm comes to its cargo. Kadar and Typhon, vigilant in character, walk point and rearguard respectively. Though they doubted their ability to hear or see better than the others, a quick glance proved that no one else was better suited to stopping an attacker quite as well as they.

For a few hours, they walked in peace, passing quiet farms and merging with a few other roads along the way. About the time that Brennan starts asking about elevensies, you begin to hear a noise. Rushing forward and cresting the hill, you see about 80' ahead of you that there's a battle to be joined.

What you see before you is carnage. Two elves lie dead, two more are surrounded by goblins(four of them), and it is clear they're making a last stand as one of them dives forward, his blade skewering an opponent before he himself is ganked with javelins. The odds stand no better as you make your preparations, at three to one still. Farther along, by about 30' or so, a dwarf does battle with a goblin that is clearly the ringleader. Wreathed in shadow, the figure almost dances playfully with his enemy, but a look at the dwarf indicates that its clear he won't last.

Alright boys, grab your dice and prepare to roll.

A growl escapes from the back of Kadar's throat as he spots the Goblins and motions the small caravan to a halt. Striding forward, he unslings his shortbow as he calls back "Beware the beshadowed one." As he nocks an arrow, Kadar begins to sing, softly at first, but soon his voice is heard ringing through the hills.

Kadar, first to act, launches an arrow into the fray, but it grazes of the goblin's leather armor, doing nothing more than turning his attention towards these new contenders.

Webbet, with the typical arcanist's desire to appraise the situation, walks forward to get a full-view of the battle.
Only Bue:
This appears to be all the goblins, but in your study of the field, you notice a fearful halfling hiding in the wagon. Having traveled to Barrow's Edge before, you're quite sure you've seen her before, but now is not the time to concern yourself with names

The elf, just as distracted by the racing arrow, fails to defend himself properly, and one of the goblins drives his morningstar into his skull. The other two move to get a clear line of sight and throw their javelins at the new soldier leading the charge. One flies wide, missing entirely, while the other shatters against his armor. As they do, they holler something in goblin, and their leader hollers back. As he turns back to his own foe, the Dwarf's blade barely misses his head. His countenance clearly changes as he lunges his fist forward, striking hard enough to drive the dwarf to the ground. Satisfied, he moves to reinforce his troops.

The leader's blow lands solid, but for one used to fighting goblins, he is surprised that the man before him survives the blow at all, let alone still standing.

The javelins fly, but only one marks its target. Webbet is barely standing, the blow powerful enough to almost knock him off his feet, but nowhere near enough to drop his ironclad concentration.

Ladios' spell separates the ringleader from his troops, as well as shields Webbet from anymore barrages from the other goblins.

Brennan and Typhon, their memory good, move in to attack the ringleader hoping to distinguish him from Kadar. Although no mishaps occur, neither's attack proves true.

Webbet's spell concludes, and his body, though weak from the blow, grows to enormously large size

Kadar & Typhon
Typon's blow proves to be a fatal distraction, as Kadar is able to cleave the goblin nearly in half, it having never seen the blow coming.

Typhon

Growing was an odd sensation. Typhon suddenly found himself towering over the battlefield, close to twelve feet tall. His head quite literally in a cloud, he could just make out the dark shapes of people still fighting below. Through the mist, he could make out the form of Ladios and Kadar... the darker shape near Ladios had to be a goblin, then.
He lines up for a downward chop, somewhat taken aback by his increased reach and the fact that his sword is effectively a greatsword for the nonce... Divine energy channels through his blade, in the hopes that he might aid his allies through an inspirational boost...

@Ladios, you can see Typhon, for certain, but can tell he's distracted elsewhere. And yes, the goblin did take damage, but 1 damage isn't very threatening to anybody at full health. Plus, there's bravado to be had by him. Also, you can reasonably tell from the dagger swipes that the other goblin is being threatened from his rear, so feel free to justify grabbing the flanking bonus.

@CRTP, keep in mind that while you can probably estimate where there's a goblin fighting Ladios due to his reactions, you'll still suffer a 50% miss chance on anyone you're not adjacent to, so use your reach with caution.

Typhon was no mage, but he was fairly certain one of the main purposes of this strange spell was to make him a bigger target, literally and figuratively. Due to his own ineptitude, this was largely not the case. The goblins were ignoring him, despite his intimidating stature and appearance. Perhaps they thought he was some sort of illusion?
Trying to swat the mist that surrounds him aside, growing increasingly frustrated, Typhon can do nothing but continue his attack on the goblin nearest him. He brings his sword down once more, praying to Raziel for strength, to Phieran for determination, and to Heironeous for victory, but the thoughts in his mind grow increasingly hollow...

He looks to his fellow allies, "I can cure some minor wounds if anyone needs them. Other than that, I'm afraid we'll need to wait for tomorrow."

Watching the others with the elf, and grateful for their help, Sten double-checks the other bodies. When she finally sees Othar the dwarf, she runs to his body, learning with disappointment that he was indeed dead.

Having contained her grief, Sten walks back to the group, and begins talking. I take it you're a man of a god, sir? She says looking at Ladios. I would appreciate it if you could give these fine men their last rites. I'd want them buried, but I fear for our safety if we stayed that long. Turning to the others, she says If some of you stronger humans could be of aid, my wagon needs turning upright again, and I doubt I'd be of any use in that regard. Afterwards, I hope you are going to Barrow's Edge, cause as of now, I'm deprived of any escort, and I fear my safety if there's another goblin attack.

Brennan

Once Ladios was able to administer aid to the elf, Brennan went off in search of something more directly related to his talents. Stopping at each goblin corpse, he searched it very thoroughly for any items of value or interest. He even checked the seams of their tunics for hidden coins or gems. I wonder if Sten would mind if I liberated a few items from her dead companions as well? It's not like they are going to need them in the afterlife.

Take 20 (23) search for all goblin corpses.

Typhon's strength is barely enough to get the job done, and the wagon crashes into an upright position again.

Brennan gathers up the war gear from the goblins, finding plenty of things worth selling, but only one item of note.

@Brennan:
9 Leather armors
8 Wooden shields
[roll0] Javelins

All sized perfectly for you, but no one else.

On the leader, you found a small piece of paper with some badly distorted goblin words on it. Only two words can be made out, "Dies" and "Belt", but the placement seems off for something about death. The picture is distinctive, so you should recognize it if you see it again.

@Kadar
With your keen intellect and a surge of insight, you determine that the note is an advertisement. You can tell it is for a magical belt of some sort, and oddly enough Dies is the name of the goblin selling it. The most important bit, though, is the price. Whatever the belt does, they're selling it for 1k gold.

Assuming the Halfling is being honest with you(which is often times a hard bet to make), it is fair to assume that the goblin carrying this was hoping to by one of these magic items with his share of the spoils, at least eventually.

-------------------

Aside: Note that the raiding party was 9 strong when it arrived. While 'small', isn't unusually so for the purpose of killing merchants. Given that the defenders managed to kill 4 of them at a 9:5 disadvantage tells you that the raiders weren't expecting defenders of any quality.

Kadar grabs some of the gear Brennan mentioned, hoisting it easily back to the wagon. Once there, he bowed slightly to the Halfling woman. "Excuse me. I suppose that's your way of asking how grateful I am? As she says that, she reaches into a pouch and pulls out a couple of glass vials. Grateful enough. These are the last I have till I reach Dennovar and resupply. I had to dig them out of a crate in the wagon. I always sell so many of them. She says, trailing off slightly as if she started talking to herself. Anyway, in addition to those, each of you has 100 gold worth of credit at my wagon. I still have quite a variety of potions and oils, some tools, goods, and a few alchemical items if the that'd suit your fancy. And don't worry about being indecisive, I'll be in Barrow's Edge for a while, till I can find another caravan to join. It isn't safe to travel these parts alone anymore. With that, she walks towards the wagon, clearly satisfied in her reply.

Eventually, Jeffery Sales works up enough courage to come forward to check things out. With him is Sten's pony, and between the two of them, it is quickly hooked back up to the wagon.

Ok, if you want to buy stuff now, go ahead. Her stock includes items up to the ~100gp range, roughly.

Oh, and the 3 potions she just gave you are potions of cure light wounds.

I have no claim to anything of the elves. Their gear, what little they carried is better put to use than left to rot. As for Othar.....we kept most of our stuff in the wagon. Not the least bit concerned that his intentions of looting the dead elves were so transparent - she was a halfling, after all, and a merchant to boot - Brennan asked "Do you have any shovels on that wagon of yours? It would make the job of giving him a proper burial easier...on us and on you. And for what it's worth, I'm sorry we didn't get here sooner."

He bent down, making a small symbol of of Olidammara.

"Make sure they go..." He pauses, stuck on the next thought, "Wherever it is they need to go."

It was as good as they were going to get.

Kadar stands and stiffens as Sten offers him the potion. To so quickly assume that he was demanding a reward for saving her rankled him to the very core. His eyes grew cold, and he left the potions hanging in her hands. Staring down at her from his impressive height, a hint of scorn creeps into his voice.

"When I desire a reward, woman, I will ask for one. This advertisement, though in the savage tongue of our attackers, demands one thousand gold pieces for a magic item. I would assume that these savages," he almost spits the word, indignant fury becoming clearer and clearer, "Do not have an ample supply of powerful magic, and thus it stands to reason that a native merchant might know from where they acquired such an item. So, I ask again, where would one go to find the source of this flyer?"

Waiting for Sten's answer, Kadar glances at the confusion over what to do with the honored dead. He approved of his newfound companion's willingness to honor them, and the thought that Sten was willing to do the same rankled at the back of his mind, a contradiction of the impression her response had given him. After the others have put forth their recommendations, Kadar clears his throat and speaks up.

"In my land it is customary to burn the honored dead in oil, that they may join the gods in the heavens, and blaze as a star in their passing."

Clearly rankled, and stunned that someone would be rude enough to turn down a gift, Sten replies in kind. And if the merchants of this area had access to such magic items, do you really think the raiders would have need to buy them? At that, she takes the flier from Kadar's hand and inspects it. I...can't read it, but I can tell you this, merchants tend to keep their logos the same, and I've never seen this one. Its either someone new, or someone far off.

At the mention of burning, Sten appeared slightly panicked. You don't see many trees, where you're from, I take it. Around here, the trees too readily accept Obad-Hai's cleansing fire, and this has been a dry week.

"Sten, Jeffery the shovels? If you have more than 1 between you we can make this quick and be on our way." Brennan allowed the others to take the shovels and begin digging while he watched Ladios "prepare" the souls for their final journeys. As soon as Ladios finished speaking, Brennan began "preparing" the corpses for burial. Out of respect for Sten, he was as unobtrusive as he could manage at searching the bodies for useful gear and tools. He was determined not to divest the corpses of their clothing or armor ... unless they had some really high quality goods on them, of course.

Take 20(23) for searching the corpses if there is time. Grabbing anything of value or use, except the armor. Keeping the loot as hidden as possible from the gaze of Sten.

Both merchants, glad to have a 'job', instantly go looking for shovels, Jeffery is back almost instantly, with Sten just a bit behind, giving Brennan little time to check Othar's body. All he manages to discover is that the man is wearing a uniquely marked breastplate under his outer-most clothing. The elves are easier, since he's not concerned with being watched while looting them. He manages to find 3 money pouches with 11 total silver between them, in addition to the obvious gear they were wearing.

I assume you're not going to try and remove Othar's armor.

-11 sp
-3 longswords

Typhon felt surprisingly little as they left the dead behind. He had been beyond the veil and back. He knew that their just rewards awaited them. It only served to remind him of his own dire fate, and so he sunk further into his typical silence.
Even the dead goblins were off to whatever reward awaited them. If they were of a particularly religious bent, they were off to the service of whomever or whatever they worshiped. If it was Maglubiyet, then they were off to join the endless armies on the plane of Acheron. Even service under an evil deity seemed a better situation than the afterlife he had earned the life before... such thoughtlessness. Such waste.
Should anymore goblins threaten the lives of innocents, Typhon would do his part to send them on their way. But he took little joy in it; killing goblins in self defense was hardly an act of heroism or good strong enough to redeem him. But he would do his part, as he should. As he must.

Brennan walked beside Jeffery's wagon. The halfling felt good about saving the elf and Sten from the raiders, and not much for the dead guards. Oh, he knew he should feel sad that they couldn't save them, but really. It's not like he knew them at all. They were hired guards as far as he knew, and guards died in bandit raids.

As they walked, Brennan asked Jeffery what he knew of the village of Barrow's Edge.

Kadar retrieves his shortbow before the wagon departs, carefully cleaning any dirt from the string and oiled wood. Replacing it on his back and sheathing his greatsword, he falls in beside the wagon opposite Typhon, keeping a close eye on the horizon. If goblins were brazenly attacking caravans so close to a civilized settlement, there was no telling what awaited them further on. As he marches, Kadar hums softly, reflecting on the strange habits of these foreigners, and what further oddities he might encounter before the destiny laid out by the crimson star was completed.

As they traveled, Brennan's conversations with Jeffery compelled him to join the man in the wagon, talking as they went. Barrow's Edge is a small town, hardly much there, it seems, but its creation formed a crucial trade-route through otherwise unexplored forest land at the time. Thirty years ago, back when the town was first settling and had no roads, it took me an extra three weeks to make my cycle going the long way around, and often times, I wouldn't make it home till the snow had come. Lost a horse that way once. Going through Barrow's Edge is quicker, and I'm able to make a few coin bringing in necessities to the locals.

I don't get what's up with the goblins. They've used to enjoy it as much as anyone when the merchants visit, but greed will get to anyone, I guess.

In late evening, as everyone's eye turns to finding a suitable spot for a camp, words of divine energy fill the air, and everyone's eye's shoot forward, realizing another goblin blocks their path, having stepped out from behind a tree as he spoke, followed closely by a wolf. With his spell complete, the grass beneath everyone's feet begins to swirl and grab. In seconds, it stops both wagons, as everyone prepares themselves for battle.

I need a reflex save from everyone except Brennan, who is save as long as he's in the wagon, DC 13
