Is this a REAL news site, or a joke one?

http://www.thelocal.se/25498/20100312/

I can't believe they got CAUGHT. What about disposing of the evidence?

Eat cakes. Eat many cakes.

Of course, when a murder goes down, where are the police? But when a truckload of pastries gets stolen, BAM! Out come the arrest warrants.

The cops are quick as greased lightning on pastry-related crimes.

Seems real. At least, the gang is real. Why'd they would target cakes is beyond me though.

I actually think the bigger question is

"Why don't more gangs steal cakes?"

Crimelords get HUNGRY you know.

The Local is real alright. I must commend the criminals' taste--they only took the best stuff. None of those nasty mazarins!

@V: Blech. I take it back, then. (The English article doesn't mention the mazarins.)
[EDIT AGAIN: Oh. The 'almond tarts' were mazarins, not those yummy baked goods with shards of almond on top. Sadness.]

According to my sources they stole mazarines as well.

Yeah, the cookies were worth 2000-2500 us$ - that's a lot of money. Plus, if they can't sell them they can eat them.

Edit: Dogmac - shouldn't you change your signature?

Are we sure the Black Cobra people weren't being used as a scapegoat? Perhaps the police (stereotypically known for a liking of pastry products and baked goods) did the deed themselves?

The Local is a news site and the source was TT (Tidningarnas Telegrambyrå), which supplies Swedish media with news, so I'd say it's genuine.

Mmmmm, looted cakes...

I deeply regret the lack of "Danish Steal Pastries" headline.

... And that's terrible.

I'd be wondering if the truck was carrying more than just cakes. It hardly seems worth the risk to snatch baked goods, and the truck was crossing international lines. I'd wonder if it was smuggling something and the gang got wind.

Can you guess what this wikipedia article says about them?

Or you're just underestimating the irresistible deliciousness that is Swedish cakes and sweets. And how expensive they are.

I doubt it personally. I'd suggest this might have an attempt to put together cash to do something a lot nastier whilst trying to stay under the radar. The linked article does say they were caught offloading some of the stolen goods into a shop, so I seriously suspect they intended to use them to get money for something more obviously criminal... Possibly drug smuggling (as the first thing that comes to mind)

I've got to say, if I were a theif, cakes and chocolate would be high on my list of things to pinch.

Sweden is my favorite country that I have not actually been to. This makes me want to go to visit the land of my heritage even more.

Go Sweden!

Why are our criminals so lame? And probably, fat.
But too their defense, Cake Is Delicious...
