I've kind of felt that most golems were boring especially the tactics used to fight one, so I thought I'd designed a golem that used something other then spell immunity to ward off magic. It will be one of the many creations of the Hash'ilk'Khan the primary antagonists of my next campaign.

These smooth metal constructs are of humanoid form but is obviously alien even from distance. It bares some resemblance to a warforged titan but its arms end in fists not hammer and axe and its head sits on top of the body with one great glowing purple eye. Running along its body snaking out from its head are a series of arcane runes that glow when ever its powers are used. Most terrifying of all it possess the spark of sentience and is thus capable of carrying out simple battle tactics

Spell Absorption(Su): Hash’ilk’Khan magic eater golems act much like rods of absorption.
Spells and spell-like-abilities directed at the golem may be absorbed.
It can absorb any single targeted spell, ray or touch spell directed at it. This requires no action on the part of the construct and it can store up to 28 spell levels of energy.[advanced golems use their strength score] A full charged magic eater golem is unable to absorb spells further and would suffer their effects.
Absorbed spell energy can be used to fuel the following abilities.
The wizard see's the golem and believes himself prepared, he fires a empowered orb of fire which streaks through the air impacting the golem's chest, the smirk on his face fades as instead of he orb shattering open in a blast of flame it sinks into the golems chest the only visible effect is the runes from the chest to the central eye glow gold

Arcane Eye Blast(Su): As long as the magic eater golem has six levels of stored energy it can use this abillity. As a swift action the magic eater golem can fire a ray of spellfire augmented by their absorbed energies at a target up to 100ft away(+10 ranged touch) The ray deals 4d6 points +1d6 per level of stored arcane energy expended. (Maximum 20d6 total)
Half the damage is fire and half the damage is pure arcane energy.

Spell Healing(Su): As a standard action the magic eater golem can expend its stored spell energy to heal its self for 5hp/spell level.

Devour Magic(Sp): If golem’s hits with its slam attack the target is effected by dispel magic (1d20+14 on the check). It make a dispel check against the spell with the highest caster level. If that check fails, It make dispel checks against progressively weaker spells until it dispels one spell[which ends the effect] or until it fail all its checks. The gloom can also strike active spell effects on the area like a wall of fire or a black tentacles spell. If a magical effect is dispelled it is absorbed by the golem if it has capacity remaining. Otherwise the effect simply dissipates.
*essentially the slam functions as an area dispel but effecting only what it makes contact with.

Magic Sight(Sp):
A Magic Eater Golem has innate detect magic as the spell but it does not need to concentrate to discern the location of the auras.
A Magic Eater Golem without any stored spell energy loses this ability.

Typically a magic eater golem is left on guard duty with 12 spell levels absorbed. It is also not uncommon for dungeon designers to include magical traps whose true purpose is to recharge the golem.

Chrysm Heart: The heart of the construct is a magical crystal which allows it to store arcane energy. It is a valuable component in the creation of magical items that store magical energy such as wands and staves. A portion of this material can be salvaged when the golem is destroyed to the value of 2d4x1000gp.
If the Golem is utterly destroyed such as by a disintegration effect so is the heart.

Construction: No, seriously I would never ever let a PC build this thing

*Remember he has an intelligence score so he gets skill points and feats.

By using a absorption technique rather then strait spell immunity it brings forth a new tactic, a rod of absorption works on and orb of acid as easily as a disintegrate spell.
The end result is the spells of choice against these guys are often drawn from the much down trodden evocation school.

What player would ever cast a spell at a golem?

Exactly spell immunity in ineffective against magic that bypasses DR.
Spell Absorption is not.
