View Full Version : How do you pronounce Elan's name?

Selif

I personally, pronounce it "ee-lan". but I have heard other people pronounce it "e-laan". In english, the second sylable should be pronounced long, but english is known to have exceptions to everything.

Thoughts?

I pronounce it close to "Ellen". E-lan. Just the way it's spelled.

I pronounce it Ellen myself, but according to a post the Giant made last year that I couldn't find, it's pronounced ee-lin

Ellen and EE-lin are the only ones that roll off my tongue nicely without sounding like 'Elaine.'

I agree with Sushi_Monster. By the time I saw the official pronunciation guide it was too late to change my habit.

Fun fact: My older niece is in first grade with a kid called Elan. I don't know how he pronounces his name, though.

We're forgetting the party's opinion in the matter:

:haley: pronounces it "Honey".
:belkar: pronounces it "Loser".
:durkon: just sticks "Lad" to anything, so it's not even pronunciation.
:vaarsuvius: pronounces it "Buffoon".
:roy: pronounces it "DAMN IT".

And if :xykon: knew it was Elan that blew Durokan's gate, he'd remember Elan's name, much to Roy's anger and frustration.

I pronounce it Eh-lan as it's the same as the word (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/elan) which fits Elan to a T.

Like Katana Geldar, I pronounce it just like the word (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/elan), and presume that The Giant had a neighbor kid make the Official Guide but he got it wrong for this one.

No joke, there is a guy in one of my classes named "Elan", who pronounces his name "Ey-lahn". Don't know if this is relevant, as the character Elan might pronounce his name entirely differently.

I've been pronouncing it "E-lan", like the "e" in e-mail and the "Lan" rhyming with the "han" in Han Solo.

Once I pronounced it "Selfcontainedunderwaterbreathingapparatice" but that was after, like, 5 cups of coffee at a Starbucks.

"el" like "El Toro" and "an" like "an apple"

I'm never quite sure how to read "EE-lin", but my best guess, and the way I was already pronouncing it, is like eel-in. Like, "Waiter, there's an eel in my soup."

Eh-LAN, like the word élan, which is where I always assumed his name came from.

same here, it might be the giants character, but i honestly have no idea how something spelled elan, could be pronounced EE-lin

I believe that phonetically, his name would be pronounced "Eh-lawn" or "El-awn", but in english, the second to the last sylable has a long vowel (who comes up with these stupid rules?), so his name would be pronounced "Ee-lehn". I would guess that the Giant spelled it "ee-lin" just to illustrate better how it was pronounced.

There's an audio interview with Rich kicking around somewhere on the net, and he pronounces it as in "New Zealand".

Yep, I can confirm this. I've heard that interview, too. Wish I could remember where we found it.

So do I. I have a Massachusetts accent. :smalltongue:

I've always pronounced it (or pronounced it in my head) as "Ey-luhn" or sometimes "Ey-lahn".

I think the word "elan" is French in origin, so I kept the original french pronounciation but anglified the second syllable slightly so that the "n" is heard clearly rather than implied, otherwise it would be sort of like "ey-luh'/ey-lah'"

Nimrod's Son

I originally imagined it as being the same as the word "élan", but having heard Rich say it himself, I prefer his version. It just sounds more like a name that way - it's like the name Ian, only with an L in it.

+1. I don't get the EE-lin "official" pronunciation.

Being from Europe, "EE-lin" doesn't sound any Europe-ish to me. I personally pronounce it as either "E-lan" (as in "New Zealand") or "Eh-lan" (as in "Élan").

Could the first link here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rich_Burlew#Interviews_with_Rich_Burlew) be the interview in question?
