Lord of Syntax
2010-03-30, 12:18 AM
<Penitent> Ar signals to his friend, who jumps down ahead of him, and he then follows after him. The lizard then starts sniffing the ground, following along the trail
<Nonpython> The air is hot and still.
<Dr_Burglar> seoryn strides along, keeping pace
<Nonpython> You walk 8-10ths of a mile
<Jokes> "Six miles?" Darrien begins walking, slowly, but gets sick of it quickly.
<Nonpython> The sparsely settled ands of Elsir Vale are starting to grow monotonous, with a seemingly endless line of dusty flyspecks of towns. The town of Drellin's Ferry lies a few miles ahead of you.
<Jokes> A horse materialises next to him.
<Jokes> "Ahh, that's better." Darrien smiles, easing himself into the saddle.
<Penitent> Ar, looks with envy, comparing his smaller dino to the large horse, wishing he could ride.
<Nonpython> It's a settlement hand on the borders of Witchwood; and the best blace from which to begin exploring the nearby forest.
* You are now known as Lord_Of_Syntax
<Jokes> The rest of the ride, Darrien sits in silence at the back of the group.
<Dr_Burglar> Seoryn also looks on in envy, fingering his heavy armor and wondering what horse tastes like........snickering to himself..
<Lord_Of_Syntax> You walk into a wider part of the road.
<Lord_Of_Syntax> roll a spot check all of you

<Penitent> I assume I still spot 3 hobos
<Lord_Of_Syntax> The road crests a small rise and decends into a dusty grove in a large shallow dell. An abandoned farmhouse, partially visible through the trees, stands on the side of the road.

<Dicey> Dr_Burglar: 4
<Dr_Burglar> (D' oh)
<Penitent> Ar calls out, "Hail friends, some strange fellows appear to be hiding in the woods. Seems awfully unkind of them."
<Lord_Of_Syntax> You've passed through a dozen spots like this already today, but this one feels wrong. Then you glimpse the glint of mail through the brush by the side of the road. Fierce warriors -- tall, hairy humanoids with wide mouths and flat faces -- are lying in wait!
<Penitent> see above about the wait lying
<Jokes> Darrien hefts his lance. "So... an ambush?"
<Penitent> "Probably. Or something like that."
<Jokes> "Oh."
<Dr_Burglar> "appears so, should I test there intentions and advance or do you want to just attack?"
<Jokes> He looks up at the sun. "I suppose they'll kill us all?"
<Lord_Of_Syntax> A hobgoblin runs and charges Seoryn
<Penitent> "I don't think randomly attacking some people who might be just hiding because they are scared of us is a good idea. We are significantly more evil looking than your average travelers."
<Lord_Of_Syntax> Seoryn is not hit by the hobgoblin
<Lord_Of_Syntax> A second hobgoblin does the same.
<Lord_Of_Syntax> Seoryn is not hit by the hobgoblin
<Lord_Of_Syntax> Pertinent goes
<Penitent> "Revising my opinion promptly" Ar instructs his new friend (the dino) to spit on those jerks (avoiding his other friends), he then uses Entangle on all the other hobos.

<Lord_Of_Syntax> He saves.

<Lord_Of_Syntax> it makes the save
<Penitent> Spitty attacks the fire hound with his awesome beak attack (moves then attacks, or charges if possible) meanwhile, not happy with fire in his face, Ar takes a step back, and shoots entangling strands of kelp all over that jerk.

<Penitent> Meanwhile, Ar casts Spirit Jaws
<Lord_Of_Syntax> huh?
<Penitent> The Jaws attack the Hell hound
<Penitent> http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/wallOfThorns.htm
<Lord_Of_Syntax> the jaws.
<Penitent> my greenbound summons can use Wall of Thorns as an SLA once per day

<Penitent> !roll 1d20+12
<Dicey> Penitent: 14
<Penitent> wah
<Lord_Of_Syntax> he was still grappled
<Penitent> oh, that's for damage, but the hound should have used his action to try to escape
<Penitent> right, it's a grapple check to do damage
<Lord_Of_Syntax> I don't mension their failures
<Penitent> if it beats the hound, then it takes another 2d6 damage
<Penitent> if the hound wins, nothing happens
<Lord_Of_Syntax> he did not get grappled
<Lord_Of_Syntax> anything else?
<Penitent> beaky tries to move up and blind the hobo

<Dr_Burglar> "crap I thought maybe the priest would have something cool"
<Penitent> We cart him off figuratively speaking, watching him closely, if anyone has rope, we tie his arms, and maybe make those feet cuff things to prevent running
<Lord_Of_Syntax> ok, you soon arrive at the town
<Penitent> I'm cool to keep going, since I don;t care about treasure, but I assume our Diviner and Binder would roll search or something

Dr_Burglar *appears* to be rolling his attacks before deciding how much to PA for. This is, how you say, illegal. That's besides the problem you pointed out with PAing for more than his BAB.

I would recommend typing out initiative at the start of combat for the benefit of your players. I see at least a couple places where turn order trouble held up the battle.

...and another couple places where spell confusion caused delays, particularly with hobgoblins inexplicably charging through Entanglement. You don't have to know every spell in the game, but you should be able to reference Core ones fairly quickly, get the AoE laid out on your map, and know who is affected.

Other than that, seems good so far. 'Course, we haven't had much chance to see how you DM out of combat. :smallwink:

Good luck!

...and another couple places where spell confusion caused delays, particularly with hobgoblins inexplicably charging through Entanglement.
Those silly hobgoblins. Always charging where they shouldn't be.

It looks like you're doing pretty good to me, and Math Mage got pretty much all the suggestions I'd give, and more.
A tip on the formatting of your post: using spoiler tags will make it much easier to scroll through the thread.

Burglar is always power attacking for full, because he has pounce, a fly speed, and Shocktrooper, so AB is unaffected by the power attack.

And I was the one that pointed out he could only PA for 6.

By my ruling, it is WAB, not BAB.

Your combats could benefit from more structure. Alternately, you could use less structure instead. Every player declares their action simultaneously, then you adjudicate all actions and type out the results all at once. Whatever you choose, it looks like your group just needs to find a rhythm of what to do in combat.

One DM to another, your combat descriptions are...rather sparse. "He hits. He misses. You take 18. The hobgoblin dies."

Jazz it up some with some description that shows off what badasses the players are and how close to death they're coming. "The two hobgoblins pair up, testing your defenses briefly, then close in for the kill. You duck one deadly swing but another scores you across your back (you take 18). Your answering stroke lands home, cutting open the hobgoblin on your left. He falls, his lifeblood gurgling out on the ground. You turn to face your remaining opponent, ready for the next exchange." An advantage of chat-based gaming is that you can pull out all the stops on narration and descriptive battle sequences. Use it!

what's WAB? ___________ Attack Bonus?

Weapon Attack Bonus = BAB + STR Mod + Weapon Enchantment Bonus.

Also, this is my first DMing session.

And why would you take something that is already doing tons of damage, and houserule it to allow him to power attack for far more?

I mean, the one thing Power Attack does not need is for character to power attack for higher numbers.

I concur. Imagine the effect if an NPC used the same trick. Could any of the PCs take that hit?

It is just that Power Attack kinda sucks at these levels.

Power attack doesn't suck at any level, especially not when you are using Shocktrooper.

I mean, the guy does 8 damage for every one point of power attack, and he takes not penalty to AB.

The choice is between him doing 3d6+61 damage per attack, or doing 3d6+133 damage per attack.

Why would you choose the second one?

Actually, you're quite correct. Power attack is actually pretty weak at the lowest levels of play, especially in the 1-2 range. By levels 3-4, it starts to come into its own, and can be a key build component for certain builds of barbarian, warblade and duskblade. By levels 5-6, almost every class sports a dozen or more builds that can use power attack effectively.

I'm not sure what level your characters are playing at, but I'm guessing that it's six or higher. Power Attack works great at that level range. If penitent's numbers are correct, then burglar is doing fine without any favorable house rulings from you.

Plus, while I haven't read through my copy of RHoD very closely yet, I doubt that anything outside the boss monsters (and probably not most of them!) could survive 3d6+133, so your house rule might possibly break the module.

On a related subject: burglar at one point flew up into the air on his mount, then charge down at a landbound foe. Unless he has some ability that allows him to change directions while charging, this is an illegal charge. Charging must be in a straight line with no changes of direction, and that includes vertical movement. This means, for example, that if opponents are located behind difficult terrain or take cover behind some obstacle, he'd need to spend one round launching into the air and moving into position, then another round charging, if he's wanting to attempt a charge. You should enforce the straight-line-only charging rule, as relaxing it would be another house rule that could as much as double the damage potential of his character in some situations.

He can fly on his own.
