@ MattosHell yes that took forever....
Anyway I think we should head for high ground ASAP. I think you should start in W-7 and head to the stairs at P-5 and meet me around N-13ish so we can buff up together.
After that I think we should pick off the Monk first so we dont get grappled.

What do you think?

**EDIT** I think buying and starting with a potion of either Longstrider or Exp retreat, that will really help moving around the map and only cost 50Gp.

Well, good luck everyone in the rematch. I guess this time Shooty won't accidentaly fall from the sky and take 10 falling damage, so it will be harder for us :smalltongue:

Before declaring purchases, I need to know what Climate/Terrain combination this Arena constipates for the purposes of Camouflage Netting(Heroes of Battle, page 95)

Syberphyst

They'll likely take high ground first with that initiative. I'll move up also to +10 to a nice spot with good LoS and hide with the netting. If Shooty flies up again I'll start sniping, you should focus on Mattos this time because once Shooty is in the air you'll have no way to reach him apart from your sling and that renders you immobile. You should probably go clockwise to Mattos while I give you covering fire

edit: Ref question, will most likely need a High Ref
OK, this is something most likely nobody tried before. I'm thinking of buying a barrel, a chest, whatever, something that can be ruled to be 5 ft high. My intention is to place it somewhere and stand on it so I get a +5 elevation. Need to know if this is acceptable and if so, how the mechanics for it work(Balance check to stay on top?)

@MattosThe spells are in the SRD a potion of a first level spell is always 50G, longstrider is +10' move for one hour, expedius retreat is +30 but only 10 rounds. I think we should go with exp retreat.

Shooty is buying a potion of Expedius Retreat and a potion of faith healing.

100G total.

@MattosGlad you like the potion idea, if you start with it in hand and use your first standard to drink it, you will get one move action of 60 instead of 2 at 30.
So by the action economy we get to drink the potion for free :biggrin:

I'll take position in D9 for the beginning, halfway decent LoS and I get there without check thanks to my ladder. Some other positions would be more favourable like C6, but it's too exposed and with them having first turn I risk being seen. D9 will have cover no matter where they go turn 1

Bobhorst:Aye, it'd probably be a DC10 balance check for most such items. If it's something large, flat, and sturdy, you might get away without one.

We'll call the terrain type temperate hills. Doesn't much matter, anyway; I think the last time someone used it they just bought Camouflage Netting (Garden Arena). :smalltongue:

Hm, alright. I keep that one in mind, for now I think I'll manage without one. Glad to have you back on the Reffing side

Purchase small Camouflage Netting(Temperate Hills) - 25 GP
though I'm not sure how to actually use it. Do I wear it over my clothes or do I have to spend an action covering myself with it once I'm in the desired position?

I'll edit my character sheet reflecting new possessions, otherwise I'm good to go

Don't think any extra action is required for its use; you simply have to be still and have a move action free to use hiding (I don't think it can be used to make a hide check at the end of a partial move action).

Hey guys, I just tried to buy a potion of Expedious Retreat in another match and my opponent reminded me that spells with a range of personal can't be made into potions. Now, both of you bought one of these. So... what now? If you already used them we'd maybe need a complete restart and that would be troublesome :smallsigh: I'd prefer some other solution

On the other hand the rolls thus far seem to not have been in our favour, with the 30 ft extra movement for both we're at a disadvantage, so... Well, no idea. Could just as well flip a coin if Random is undecided too

hm if you can track that PRC down and justify the potion as a legal item that would be a nice solution. Otherwise I guess we will end up with the restart, Arena precedent for willingly allowing a rule mistake with rather big consequences is pretty thin I guess and winning because of that could maybe feel rather hollow for you

Plus, I have no idea why we didn't reactionary buy an expedious retreat potion for Syberphyst too. If you have it and he doesn't he'll never catch you in melee. Lack of insight on our part it seems

Master Specialist Abjurers can do it for Abjuration spells, and Spellguard of Silverymoon can do it for certain buffs, but neither works on Expeditious Retreat. Time to restart, I believe.

Just thought of this. You lose mobility because reloading your sling is a move action, so start with a loaded sling in each hand and one in your mouth and drop them after use, that way you have three shots without need of reloading

You know what, go for the 3 slings anyway. They don't even cost money and you can just drop them anytime if you get into melee range. Additional options with no disadvantage never hurt

Just to make sure, even though the match until this point is void the spoilers shouldn't be read in case anyone will repeat the same course of action

yeah, RAW is rather unreasonable when it comes to people talking... 40 feet is -4 for distance, he has to beat the DC by 10 to make out the words... Not a given he makes the check. Had the same problem in my Round 90 match

As far as I can tell, the only time it has been enforced is if the parties are behind walls/have no LOS or if they are trying to whisper without being heard.

There are LOADS of matches where partners have talked to each other or their opponents with no check.

As I said, if thats how we (the high refs) want it, then thats fine by me, but we really need to think about the can of worms we are opening.
That and and I said thats not how it has been done in the past.

In this case I am in LOS of my partner, not that far away with no walls, shouting in Elven so he can hear me. Sadly by RAW it seems that chances are that he cant.

I have a feeling we may need that mighty summoning spell the name of wich i will not speak....

I could spend the night rumbling about RAW oddities, but then I'd miss my philosophy seminar tomorrow. Yes, listening is handled very badly by RAW, but that's all we have.

Though if we assume Shouting is DC-10, DC0 to understand, he would hear you with his +7 modifier and -4 distance. Problem is that RAW gives no DC for shouting, only talking. So yeah, since this is something important for many a match I fear you have to summon Big K.

On Listen Checks In LoS: Precedent says that anyone speaking in a strong voice (ie: not whispering) is automatically heard by those in LoS.


On Listen Checks Without LoS: Precedent says that noise, even a load shout isn't automatically heard if you don't have LoS to the source, making listen checks required. The base DC is set by the local LoS ref, but is usually between -5 and -10 for shouting depending on the ref and how pointedly loud the shouter implied themself to be.

For speech improperly posted in the open warnings may be issued, but rewinds are rarely called for unless the shout legality had been challenged.

The Listen Precedents are a mess truthfully: what I listed was how I and a few others commonly have ruled, but I'm sure other refs have done differently both now and in the past.

The only real rule on speech and listen seems to be "LoS Ref's Choice" -and- "Anything within the limits of Precedent and/or RAW provided the rulings are consistent for the whole match"

I guess we, the unpaid refs, probably ought to put something more official into writing...

Yeah, basic listen precedents for 2v2s as far as I've both ruled them, and seen them ruled, would be that next to each other, you can whisper and automatically hear, no check needed. Others not next to you but close have to roll for it. Like Psionic said, if you have LoS, you can post it out in the open. It's just easier that way. This is one of those times Arena precedent overrides RAW, for the better in my opinion. We can add it to the rule list, but first we'd all need to sit down (or summon Kyeudo) and determine whether this is the way it should work, officially..

OK furmonger I'll be honest with you now. Seems you don't know what my Camouflage Netting this. In short, it allows me to hide in a square without cover as long as I have a move action left after arriving in said square. My Hide modifier is +26, so unless you brought a Detection spell it is impossible for you to find me until I start sniping you, getting -20 on hide. I know you have Law Devotion, Blessed Aim and Animal Devotion active, so it is in my interest to outwait those buffs. So unless you want to start shooting random squares, I propose we fast-forward until your buffs run out. Or you just take 8, 9 rounds in a row, unless you hope to get lucky by shooting blindly I'll do nothing apart from keeping up my readied action

Oh i understand how the netting works. I'll be honest tho, the fact that you can be in a plain featureless area and I cant notice the man sized lump is beyond stupid.

The "I hide/turn Invisiable and make the game take months due to LOS checks/not seeing each other" game is about enough to make me just concede any match i find it in as I find that there are a lot more fun ways to spend an afternoon like DIY eye surgery for example.

However having said that I do applaude you for getting such a high Hide DC that when coupled with camo netting makes me want to take the Mattos express and rent a sister just to have her throw things at me in the hope that my mother will hear of it and ground me from the computer.

Now that I have that out of my system I will accept your offer as I assumed that was the plan.

Oh believe me, I don't like hiding endlessly while LoS checks have to be made either. I planned Bobhorst as a mobile sniper, sadly it turned out he is way more effective as a sitting duck(though I have an idea how to fix it next level)

The catch here is that you can't possibly find me, so we don't need endless LoS checks while I wait. Bobhorst was my first Arena character and I disliked the amount of LoS checks he needed and all the work that meant for a few Refs. Take a look at my character Sturmherz and his matches in Round 89 to see what my solution for this problem was. I just could have waited 9 rounds while you keep asking for LoS, but instead I revealed my hand to get the boring search-and-don't-get-LoS phase over in one stroke

yes you do, especially considering the opposition in the final. Snipers are annoying and hard to counter without a good spot modifier, that's why I designed Sturmherz as the nightmare of casters and shooters

haha, yeah, it's a nice touch of 2on2s that it's possible to fight every other team. Kind of why I hope Psidog and Vollmond make it into the final in Round 90

well then, I'm gonna resubmit Bobhorst then after some corrections. Travel Devotion + insane hide + Camouflage Netting - move and snipe afterwards, snipe and move afterwards. Way more fun to play :smallbiggrin:
