Ok, so I have insomnia and I was reading through old OOTS. And it occurred to me, it says in the Monster Manual, that wights are animated through sheer hatred and violence, Now,
How can Tsukiko animate bodies as Wights, if she is not using "sheer violence and hatred" to animate them. To the contrary, she seems to have a very kind and maternal attitude when animating them.
Is it that the subject being animated must have led a violent and hateful life, or died in a violent and hateful way, or the caster has to fuel the emotions? Or am I just reading too much into the flavor text?

That fluff doesn't refer to using Create Undead, but to their natural animation.

Probably reading a bit too much into it. From a "mechanical" point of view, all it takes is a spell to bring a creature back as a wight. For example, do you don't see Durkon praying to Thor every time somebody needs healing - just a grab of the holy symbol and the right spell.

Technically Wights are not on the lists for Create Undead or Create Greater Undead- they are produced by killing something with negative energy- since in the DMG, anything killed with negative energy rises as a wight.

The undead creature being created in the recent strip,

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0708.html

doesn't look much like a Wight- more like a ghoul or ghast.

Though I think she might have created one while fighting The Resistance- maybe Rich added Wights to the Create Undead list?

EDIT: Apparently she didn't- the only new wight we see appeared to have been created by wights draining humans.

So, are wights controlled by the person who created them even though its just from dieing of negative energy damage?

On a related note, do they count towards the maximum number of undead that you can control?

She's a Cleric, so she can command them. Or maybe they just decided to follow her - they are intelligent, after all.

That depends on how they are created, and how they are commanded. The Animated pool is separate from the Rebuking pool, and 'naturally' created Wights don't contribute to the former.

Don't forget: "He's only a child (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0516.html)! I only made him four weeks ago!"

I suppose she could have "made him" with a few well placed Enervation spells.

Whoa, the title of the thread has nothing to do with the thread itself, other than it mentions "wights."

Yep, you've got 'em dead to wights.

You're both wight!

Anyways, The Giant hasn't been following the core rules with regards to the giant army of undead. Probably a case of The Computer Is A Cheating Bastard (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheComputerIsACheatingBastard) or more likely The Rule Of Drama (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RuleOfDrama)

I'm actually guilty of this as a DM, and I'm sure many others are too. I don't care if there's no spell on hand that has the effect I want, I'm going to make it happen anyways because it's cool, because it's scary, or because it advances the plot.

Or by forcing a prisoner to hold some unholy arrows until he got Negative Levels equal to his hit dice. Sleight of Hand is a good way of sneaking them into a commoner's pocket and then watching the havok ensue.

Remember, cross-class learning is the key to a rich and fulfilling life. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0141.html)

Also, there are many ways to control free-willed undead and my guess is that she Rebukes, but it's fair to assume that she has Command Undead in her spellbook too.

OP: The MM refers to the natural way that wights become animated, not how they are created by spells. Morghs are mass-murderers in this respect and Ghouls are cannibals, but both can be created by magical means as well as occur "naturally".

First Rule of RPG: The GM makes the rules. The GM is God, even above the sourcebook and the Random Number God.

Thus, if the GM of this setting (Rich) wants to, it's his wight to allow any undead he wants summoned.

I thought that was Rule 0. :smalltongue:

I didn't say it was Rule 1, I said it was the first rule. 0 is first if you include it. :smallcool:

Yeah, I thought Rule 1 was Monty Python references will result in the confiscation and destruction by fire of your character sheet?
