So I'm helping a fellow DM jump start an Asian campaign setting. One of the things he likes is for the players to have customizations since he'll be limiting them to Wu-Jen, Shugenja, Fighter (called samurai), Monk, Inkyo, Sohei, Rogue and Ninja (either versions). He's already decided to use the Prestige Bard, Ranger and Paladin Variants from Unearthed Arcana.

The road block he's hit now is that there are almost no variants for Shugenja. The one variant I was able to find for him was from Way of the Shugenja which gave up Sense Elements for doubling the number of 0-level spells known and per day (i think). Anyway, it's a fairly lame variant.

So I've been asked to come up with some variants for Shugenja in exchange for the Sense Elements ability. The DM would like to try and give the players a different variant for each of the 4 elements that a Shugenja can pick.

Here's what I've thought of so far. Please comment, make suggestions for change or suggest additional variants!

Favored of Air: lose sense elements; must have air focus; gain a fly speed of 5' with average maneuverability while under the effects of an air spell you cast as the air kami pick you up to drift you over battle fields and out of harm's way.

Favored of Water: lose sense elements; must have water focus; when ever you cast a water spell with the healing descriptor upon an ally, the water kami protect you from harm by blocking any attacks of opportunity that your casting might provoke. This benefit does not apply when targeting yourself.

Favored of Earth: lose sense elements; must have earth focus; the earth kami invigorate you making you sturdier than normal, while benefiting the effects of an earth spell you cast, or an ally who is benefiting from the effect of one of your earth spells is within 5', you gain a +8 sacred bonus to resist bull rushes, trips, grapples, tramples and overruns.

Favored of Fire: lose sense elements; must have fire focus; whenever a creature takes fire damage from one of your fire spells with instantaneous duration, that creature must make an additional Reflex save (DC=10+spell's level) or catch fire as fire kami torment them even longer. This ability does not work if a creature does not have anything combustible on their person.

*For all purposes "air" "earth" "fire" and "water" refer to the shugenja spell element and not the spell descriptors

Careful with the low-level flight...

The fire one also seems pretty weaksauce compared to the other ones.

Elemental Companion: Lose Element focus, sense element.

benefit: Gain an Element Companion that functions Druid’s Animal Companion. Use the Druid’s Animal Companion table.

When the Hit dice reach twice the amount of its last state it grows one size category. IE: a small Air Elemental becomes medium at 4HD (2*2). IT becomes a Large Air Elemental at 8HD (4*2) and Huge Air Elemental at 16HD (8*2)

Your spells must reflect you companion depending on what elemental you chose (Air, Earth, Fire, or Water). (Acts like elemental focus)

Should your elemental die you must pray to nature for 24 hour burning incense that cost 100 gp per your new elemental's HD.

When casting spells and your elemental is not present (within 100 feet per CL) you must treat yourself as 2 level lower.

That's... a substantial upgrade over Sense Elements.

OK so it can only be summoned for 1 hour per 2 class levels?
