I picked up a one month subscription as I wanted to build up a monk and avoid the hassle of poring through books. However, it downloaded the latest version and a fair number of things are missing - feats, ki focuses and even basic monk powers. How long does it normally take before the character builder is up to date?

I had it for a little while. It had a monthly update schedule. I think the updates usually came within a week or two of book releases.

Correct, with the exception of when they go into Holiday months (Usually around December), in Which case it updates on the second last Tuesday of the month.

The next Update is on the 6th. (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Calendar.aspx)

Thanks. Hopefully the stuff I want will be in the next update.

You can expect the following to be in:
Books released last month (Possibly with errors - It'll be listed as "BETA". Usually there aren't any or they minor).
Dragon from last month.
Content from any Adventures released last month.
Edit: Rule Updates from last month or this month. I forget which.
