Aboard the Strike Cruiser Pain and Glory

The daily prayer had been done. The morning training had been done. The cruiser arrives at Rhane, a planet overrun by a large Tau force, led by the Ethereal Aun' Sha. A several regiments of the Imperial Guard Death Korps of Krieg had already landed at met heavy resistance. A distress signal was sent out. It was answered. A 10 man squad consisting of five neophytes and five initiates respectively stand in front of their drop pod as a gruff voice begins on the intercom.

"This is Chaplain Antaeus. The xeno enemy is waiting for you down below on the planet of Rhane. They stand there with their weapons ready to kill us all. Will you give them the glory? Or will you take it from them and rip out their very soul? Brothers, we will deliver the Emperors fury to these petty aliens. We shall smite the enemies of the Emperor with undying rage. Purge this filth from this planet and reclaim it for in the Emperors name. Our bodies are armoured with Adamantium, our souls protected with loyalty. Our bolters will bring death to the Emperor's enemies. Brothers, join me now as we renew our oaths to the Emperor.
O, Emperor, in wrath rejoicing at bloody wars, fierce and untamed, whose mighty power doth make the strongest walls from their foundations shake. All conquering Master of Mankind, be pleased with this war's tumultuous roar. Delight in swords and fists, red with alien blood, and the dire ruin of savage battle. Rejoice in furious challenge, and avenging strife, whose works with woe embitter human life.
We are the Emperors Chosen. For the Emperor."

The drop pod, not unfamiliar to the great space marines hisses as it pressurizes and the seat straps open. It's black paint, rusted from the countless use disappears to the gas. One door is open for entry. A red light begins to flash as the alarm sounds. The battle for Rhane is about to begin.

Just post what your characters do and how they react. Mission briefing will be gone over as you hurtle towards the planet within your drop pod.

"For the Emperor," the Scout Sniper proclaims, "so I swear."

With the oath renewed, Animus Shah enters the drop pod, seating himself where he could best see the outside, once the doors open.
This is not his first time entering a hostile world via a pod, and he knew he would be among the last to exit it; As the squad's sniper, he must be able to cover the entire group from all directions from the moment they touch the ground.

After seating himself, the Marine rechecks his Sniper-Rifle for the last time, waiting for the others to come in.

Eric

Carrying his assigned Heavy Bolter and wearing his scout armor, Eric moves into the drop pod. This was his first real mission out into the field doing the Emperors will. He had heard stories from his father of the days when he was in the Imperial Guard. The stories of his father out there on forgeign worlds in thin armor and armed only with a lasgun... a weapon that could cut a man in twain but seemed to barely tickle the monstrous Xeno that waged war with Man.

In the guard, each man relied on his fellows. There was no soldier who could stand alone in the Guard, only with groups working together and the support of the Emperors war machines could they do battle.

But Eric was a Space Marine, he was a Superman. A one-man army equipped with better armor and weapons than his fathers whole platoon and it was the mission of him and ten others to do the job of hundreds.

He sits down in the drop pod.

"For the Emperor."

En shakes his head in sadness as he enters the drop pod. These aliens could not, did not see, would never see His Light, and had spread their blindness across the galaxy. And when he, his brothers, his Chapter, the Imperial Guard, the Right Hand of the Emperor had toppled their bastions, defaced their shrines, erected great pyres of the aliens who had raised the white flag to the sky, they would never see. They would all be dead. It was a shame, really.

En straps himself into the drop pod, shakes off his sadness, and smiles.

''My brothers, activate your armour's signal beacon so i can track your vital signs. For the emperor!!!''

after the speech he checks his narthecium, just to make sure he got it all.

Decimus

The young Space Marine grips his weapon with pride and dignity, ready to serve the Immortal Emperor's cause. As he sits on the Golden Throne of Holy Terra, the Space Marines will heed his word. It felt good that he could bear such a title, "Space Marine." He could save those humans he had once been, he could destroy the impure, the impotent, the foul Xenos. No lingering doubt wanders in his mind, and he stares forward.
"For the Emperor." he says, with zeal in his voice.

The Initiates strap down once they see their neophytes sit down before them.

Angellus: Initiate Rigol
Eric: Initiate Kiel
En Direch: Initiate Gobbo
Animus Shah: Initiate Azrikam
Decimus: Initiate Linus

The drop pod seals itself shut and it goes dark, save for the red light that is above the door, lightly illuminating the drop pod. The pod seems to do nothing for a moment, then suddenly, it jerks downwards and the G's begin to be felt as the drop pod hurtles towards the worlds atmosphere. Initiate Azrikam touches his helmet and suddenly, a minimap appears on all sides of the drop pod.
"Our target is simple. Eradicate the tau from the planet. However, simple is not good enough. There is a Ethereal on this planet, as well as a high ranked tau commander, which we feel if we take them down, it will effectivbely cripple the entire Tau Force for the duration of this crusade. The plan is to flank the enemy right when we land, take them with surprise and engage in close combat. Then we will move along the city line until we reach a sewer entry point, until which we can enter and resurface at the outskirts of the tau base. They have no shortage of battlesuits, nor infantry and vehicles, so be prepared to be engaged in heavy firefights. Kroot warriors are not expected to be in great numbers either. And remember, as this is a city, watch for snipers. The Emperor is with us. We WILL not fail. Death or Glory my brothers."

The screaming from the Drop Pod ends in a great crash and every marine is shaken up from their seats. The straps fly off and the light flashes yellow briefly, before turning green. The doors burst open as the Initiates stand in front of the Neophytes, like they had done dozens of times before. They slung up their weapons and began starting out, firing at the enemy. Initiate Rigol is hit immediately in the chest and in the head, knocking him almost instantaneously to the ground. The orange sky and the dim sunlight illuminates the battle field, revealing a battlefield of death and carnage. The Death Korps of Krieg had mounted an offensive and their carcasses littered the field as they carried on their fighting. But that was not the frightening part. To the left of the drop pod were the rest of the Black Templars, emerging from their drop pods, only to be met by a torrent of gunfire and mortars. The corpses of six marines were already visible from the drop pod as the Black Templars, shrugging off the enemy fire continued forwards. The enemy, seemingly entrenched in bunkers and in trenches were firing their pulse rifles as if it was a turkey shoot, gun drones were spitting out rounds, and Battle suits firing their heavy weaponry towards the marines. Overhead, Thunderhawks fly by, exhausting their ammunition while dropping assault troops onto the ground, albeit 3 of the 5 were downed by Heavy Anti-air fire.

The terrain is rocky, providing good cover, but the field is also littered with corpses and the wreckage of Korps Tanks. The Imperial Guard are in the process of holding their lines as the Astartes power forward. The squads path is clear however, a small and rocky hill above the battlefield, providing perfect outflanking position and leads in the general direction of the objective.

"Brothers, to me, let us silence the Tau with the roar of our bolters and chainswords!" Azrikam roars as he fires a shot from his sniper, ripping the head off a tau warrior and the initiates fire as well, providing covering fire for the squad.

En takes a moment to get his bearings, observe the tide of battle, and promptly go against it. Drawing his bolt pistol in one hand, with his smoke grenade in the other, he darts away from the group, a lean figure of black and white carapace.

The plan is simple. The Templars may have knightly trappings, but they are shock troops first and foremost, and the word 'shock' is foremost on his mind at this time. He bowls the smoke grenade forward, as if to cover his advance - with his 'attack' thus covered, he leaps back to the thinning Crusader squad, a smile on his face.

A wall of thick, acrid, chemical smoke erupts in the midst of the no-man's land before the trench system.

Phantom warriors, the half-seen shadows of the Templars advance through the smoke - or are those just the wrecks of vehicles? With any luck, the Neophyte reasons, by the time they can be sure that there are no marines in the cloud, they'll be long gone - upon them, even.

I assume that the night-vision-replicating blacksun filters would be foiled by smoke, but I don't know.

Eric

Bursting from the drop pod, Eric looks around the battlefield and brings his Heavy Bolter to bear. Locking onto the closest of the tau battle suits, he lets the heavy weapon roar as it spits out heavy bolts into the xenos armored vehicles.

He keeps firing, using his weapon to take out the battle suits while he slowly moves towards cover. There is no guarantee that he will survive this battle, but he will use every moment to send death into the enemy!

Animus kneels besides Azrikam, takes aim and squeezes the trigger. The bullet flies through no man's land and hits a trenched Fire Warrior in the neck, its gray blood spilling down its chest.

"One," says Shah to his master. The target's upper body falls to the ground, its legs still in the trench.
The Sniper then moves his rifle slightly, the cross-aim already on the next warrior, but before he is able to shoot, a cloud of smoke fills his vision.

He grunts and removes the scope from his eye. "Too soon," he whispers, "damn it."
Seconds later he hears Eric's shots take down a Battle-Suit, silence, and begin again. With that, the smoke, and the squad's Initiates covering the nearest section of the trenches with their bolters, Animus murmurs a quick prayer and runs through no man's land.

He stops for cover whenever possible, usually a large rock or a blown out Leman Russ, and takes a few choice shots before moving on. Hopefully, he'll get to the hill before the Tau realize they should retreat.
Then, it will be his and his brothers' turn to hunt for turkeys. Tau Turkeys!

It is too late. Brother Rigol succumbed to an instant death when he was struck by the fire. His carcass drops to the ground before he can utter a sound. Another marine had fallen in the name of the emperor. His gene seed awaits the medicae.

A battle suit crumples to the ground as tau fire warriors continue firing. The rest of the bolts strike the surrounding fire warriors, knocking some to the ground and killing a few. The smoke and smog covers the small little area as shots continue to be fired through it, regardless of the smoke, making the field even more dangerous as shots become more sporadic and randomly aimed, causing confusion. The rest of the battle brothers disappear from view.

"Good thinking my neophyte!" En's Initiate roars as he moves forwards to follow Azrikam

Brother Azrikam leads the squad up the mountainous terrain until he reaches a narrow passage, similar to the Hell's Gate of Thermoplyae. There, he hugs the walls as the initiates do likewise as they slowly advance through the narrow passage towards the end. The passage doesn't seem to be used very often at all and seems to be clear of all enemies. As you slowly advance down it, a little movement can be notice up on the crevices above. Could it be the enemy, or could it be just a trick of the light, or the thunderhawks and tau fighters thundering overhead?

By the way guys, think of this kind of like D&D a bit, roll for attempting to notice anything and the more detail you add in your actions, the increased modifier will be to your roll, such as even if you got a 2 on a d20 roll (which is what we are rolling), if you have a good description, it could veto that failiure.

As the Tau defenders fall to heavy bolter fire and other Imperium weaponry, the Space Marines follow behind Brother Azrikam.

Eric keeps an eye out on the fallen bodies as he quickly follows them, he stops only to pick up one of the fallen weapons dropped by a downed Imperial Guardsman. A simple lasgun... Eric quickly stows the simple gun away as a back-up weapon and runs to join the others.

As they follow the treacherous mountain passage, Eric keeps an eye out for enemies. Every nook and crevice in this place could harbor enemies and who knows what a well-placed explosive could do in a place such as this.

Decimus falls into line with his squad. He had to watch out for the enemy, and for allies of the Imperium. The Tau will be purged, he assures himself. And I, and my brothers, shall do it. He keeps his his flamethrower, his judgement-bringer, close to him, his finger on his trigger.

He must be wary, for the overly-arrogant are the corpses that litter the ground below him. He must proceed with caution, and, after a short time, the enemy will fall to the ground, writhing in pain from the Omnissiah's grace.

Quietly cursing, En ducks and weaves, following his mentor's lead. Well, maybe the blind firing was a little more indiscriminate and dangerous, but it certainly beat precision fire. He imagined that they could withstand any glancing hits coming their way - Astartes not being known for wilting under fire.

Cautiously hanging back, En Direch engages in what could charitably be called the timeless Astartes doctrine of 'overwatch'. Covering the rest of the squad while it surges forth to glory, swinging one's bolt pistol back and forth is not a valorous role, but En knows that it's vital for the squad's continued survival. There's valour in that.

Angellus sees a note appear in the corner of the HUD
Brother Rigol is KIA the rest of the squad are fine and have sustained minimal to no damage in the form of minor scratches on the Imperiums holy armour. By the way don't use too much onomatopoeia and I doubt a space marine would say ouch, he would be more likely to roar a battle cry

(By the way, below in the spoilers, I want you to READ YOUR OWN spoilers, not everyone elses, to preserve game reality or in an attempt to at least)

As the squad moves slowly, Eric finds himself relatively close to the front with Animus, En is in the middle, between his and Angellus' initiate, while Angellus and Decimus find themselves close to the rear.

Eric notices A large robot like machine bounds over into a crevice and there are several explosives close by from where it leapt from. He also sees a faint silhouette far away close to the end of the passage... You don't really notice the explosives in the rear because you're father ahead.

Animus: Animus spots nothing close by, but farther away, he sees a dark figure at the end of the passageway but it could be the trick of the light. It is unmoving and resembles a rock.

Decimus and Angellus : Decimus follows closely behind his Initiate and as he looks around, he spots nothing of interest. Until somehting catches his eye, just as he walks past it. A flashing light on one of the crevices, which begins to accelerate in its flashing. The scouts already know what is going to happen. Both of you make a reflex save

Ahead, Azrikam suddenly slows down and begins to move extremely slowly, scanning the area. It is evident he has seen somehting that the squad hasn't noticed, but he doesn't seem sure of what he saw

Decimus dives forwards, knocking over his initiate in the process and Angellus attempts a backflip as an explosion rocks the passageway. Angellus, dodging what he didn't see as an explosive, miscalculates the jump and is sent flying several feet backwards, smashing his head and narthecium against the wall of the passageway. Decimus got the least of the explosion as he dived ahead of it as debris rains down on the squad. Azrikam turns towards the event just as Animus fires his shot towards the dark figure, but is unable to determine if he had struck his target as a small dustcloud overtakes his view. Eric, having spotted the robot, fires his bolts at it, striking it several times in the chest, knocking it off balance, obviously catching it by surprise. It begins to fall slowly, trying to activate its jets to prevent it from crashing, as it hovers around wobbling in midair, a easy target for the marines.

As the dust cloud swirls around the squad, a shot is felt flying past the neophytes but it isn't clear if it found a target, as the explosion caused temporary deafness, the ringing sound still in their ears and their vision obscured.

Angellus is stunned and shocked by the explosion and is unable to react to anything as he lays on the ground trying to come to his wits.

Decimus lies on the ground, gripping his weapon as his initiate gets up and moves towards the front of the squad, however he does not suffer the same things Angellus does, having missed out on most of the explosion.

Eric spots several more figures at the end of the passageway, this time moving towards the group. The dark object is still there, having not done anything apparently, as the figures move past it.

Eric brings up his Heavy Bolter and pumps rounds into the hovering robot while he has the chance, hearing the sweet crackle as explosive rounds rip into metal xeno armor. The constant barrage sends force through the robot, throwing its stabalizers off even more and making it near impossible for it to rright itself.

Lets see if I can make the robot crash on top of those figures in the distance...

Getting a little clever, Eric moves the stream of bolter fire to the side, hitting the robot off-center and adding spin and momentum to it as it tries to stay aloft. The attack does less damage but forces it to move through the air even as its being ripped apart by the weapon. With the right amount of skill (and luck) the robot should land on or ear those figures approaching the group.

A multitude of shots from Animus, Eric, and En knocks the robot out of the air, however, Eric is successful in 'moving' the robot over to the small crowd, sending it crashing into a few of them. The figures all begin to fire towards the squad. As shots fly by the squad, Azrikam drops to the ground for cover.

Angellus sits leaning against the corridor dazed. His HUD is spinning and rapidly refreshing, adding to the confusion already going on in his head. He sits there with bolt pistol in hand trying to reorient himself. His heart races as the drugs enter his system and he is unable to do much other than roll over. He is in a minor state of shock but is recovering rapidly

Animus spots the enemy in the corridor and identifies them as a large group of tau fire warriors and kroot mercenaries, which are slowly advancing. He fires towards them, and hits a fire warrior square in the head, knocking it to the ground.

The source of the fire is from the far end of the corridor, as the small group converges on the space marines. Their advantage over the marines seem to be long range fighting, as all marines have heard, tau are especially horrible at close combat. However, pinned down by large swathes of tau fire, each fairly well aimed at the marines, the squad is effectively motionless.

Erics well placed fire has drawn some attention as more shots begin to be fired towards him. Decimus' initiate is struck and he falls, just as the other initiates take cover on the ground. The marines are in a losing firefight.

Eric has the right idea, as he moves forwards, firing as he does so, sending bolts of the Emperors mgiht towards the enemy, as Animus does a heroic throw that a human could never do, lobbing the grenade so far and heavily that it strikes a tau, killing it before the grenade truly explodes. The explosion throws several tau into the air. The remainder of the squad begins to move towards the tau enemy.
"Charge! For the Emperor my brothers!" Azrikam roars as he slings his rifle over his back and wields his chainsword. The rest of the Initiates charge, firing their bolters as they go. The Tau defenders fire back at the Space marines as they go. Angellus finds strength in his legs and he gets up, and finds he is able to join the charge. As the pulse shots ring by the squad, several strike their target, blowing En's head off and several more striking him in the chest, throwing him backwards and onto the ground, his corpse a rag doll. Several pulse shots supress Decimus and he's too surpressed to move, forcing him to the ground and find cover, however, the rest of the squad charges, with their faith in the emperor.

In a seconds, the Tau warriors meet with the Battle brothers. During the charge, the last thing before the contact is a loud explosion and a the squad's sight is comprimised for a whole second during the charge. A photon grenade goes off just before the clash. During the clash, Azrikam cannot be seen, and in the confusion, Angellus and Animus find themselves back to back fighting off the kroot. Several kroot attack each of them, as they swing and hack, slowly, but with strength in each blow.

Eric, however, manages to lop off the heads of several kroot and tau with bolts of the Emperors fury before actually jumping into the battle, swinging his Heavy bolter and hacking at the kroot as if it was a toy. His great strength and offensive prowess, however, draws the attention of five kroot, who surround him.

During the close combat, Fire warriors continue to fire at Decimus as he is unable to move due to the constant fire.

The world around the marines turn red as the adrenaline rushes to their heads and everything is a blur. Weapons swinging and hacking at each other, only to be blocked by a deft and quick deflection. The kroot, prove themselves true to be only useful in close combat. However it is a joke, as the kroot seem to have only strength in numbers and no combat skill whatsoever.

The kroot wait for the marines to attack.

Every marine hears a voice in their heads.
Make your move.

Eric

"Enemies of mankind will DIE!" Eric quickly opens fire with his heavy bolter and spins in a circle, the stream of bullets hitting all the kroot who surrounded him in addition to any xeno scum foolish enough to stand up near him.

"Who wants some more?" he asks, turning towards the largest grouping of enemies he can see, seeing them as merely another target for him to pass judgment upon.

We are but the Emperors hands... the hands he uses to CRUSH ALL LIFE OUT OF XENO SCUM!!

Animus

The sniper goes on the defensive. With only a battle knife in hand, he can do little else against their numbers. Besides, he may be able to dodge their attacks and move in on the Tau, but he's not the sort of man to leave a comrade behind.

"Eric!" He shouts out, swinging his blade and deflecting another potentially lethal thrust from a Kroot.
If his brother gives his aid, then Animus quickly ducks, and tells Angellus to do the same.
No matter what happens, well, what can a Marine do against these Xeno? "Death! In the Emperor's name!"

A heavy slash. The blood pours out. Another kill. "Where's Azrikam?!"

Eric

Hearing Animus, Eric moves toward his battle brother to assist. Using the chainsword bayonet as a melee weapon to help flank the xeno attacking Animus.
