One of the big things is usually to get rid of your qualifications as a unicorn rider.

Bah. I still qualify, and I'm 24. There's no big rush.

In America, you are legally an adult for everything but alcohol. You get to vote, own property, buy tobacco and pornography, call those infomercials that say "You must be 18 or older to call"...

The list goes on.

Just 8 more months for me...

For all those turning 18 in the US, and who are male:

Don't forget to register with selective service. They'll fine you if you don't. You have something like 30 days before and after your 18th B-Day to register. I barely got mine in on time.

I'm not entirely sure why we still have to register for the draft, despite it being...pretty much illegal, but we do.

They'll do what now? I'm almost 22 and never did that and haven't heard from anyone.

I'm pretty sure that if they 'find out' they'll just say "Hey! Do this!" THEN I can get in trouble for refusing. Until then, however, I don't belive it's a problem

EDIT: Oh, and happy birthday V

Yeah, I never heard of this selective service thing. I've never voted and they seem to think I still live with my grandma. Hooray for never filing a change of address form :D

I think overuse has already done that. :smallwink:

It's not illegal, there just hasn't been a draft since 'Nam, and we aren't likely to except in extreme situations. The current political climate and the fact that only men have to sign up with the Selective Service (Discrimination!) are probably two of the biggest reasons why it's that way.

selective sevice, whaaaa?
US's term for "The guys who keep track of you for the Draft."

Mystic Muse

well, I'll sign up for that when I turn 18.

I turned 18 two days ago and I got a letter from the Selective Services. It said, "If the information on this letter is correct, then don't do anything. Let us know if anything is wrong." So I assume they have me covered.

Wow. weird. I had to go online and fill everything out and stuff, after they sent me a letter saying I hadn't yet. Maybe different states have different takes on it, OR it changes how it works VERY rapidly.

You do realise the thrill and joy of buying alcohol underage will no longer exist now? Unless you live in the states of course, and then you got a good few years to go still.

Happy b-day

I wish I went wild when I turned 18 a year ago. I wanted to do the things that I was too afraid to do, yet I still find myself afraid to do a lot of it.

Don't be like me, go crazy.

Same here, I wonder if they've changed how it's done.

Oh, and Happy Birthday V!
