The blame doesn't fall fully on the girl when bad stuff happens while she does things like that (it's still the guy's (or guys') fault for actually following through)No. The blame is always and entirely the perpetrator's. Also, what the other person said regarding people not being punished for wearing what they want to. See: ultra-conservative societies and full-body veiling. And that is all I will say on that here.

Agrias! >.< \../

Probably my favorite character from FFT...which is funny because as far as the named characters go, if I recall, she kinds gets sidelined...but hey. >.>

Now I want to figure out why I like her so much. I'm not normally really sensitive about ye ol female cahracter stereotypes, but maybe it has something to do with her subverting several, and falling victim to none [IE she wears full armor, is physically quite strong, as well as being an interesting character emotionally, she's not anyone's love interest...etc]

Actually, about a hundred years ago that was how Finnish women were taught to defend against bears; raise the skirt. It'll unveil your power source which is mightier than the bear forcing it to flee (obviously they didn't use panties back then).

The Vinlanders were kicked out of Greenland, which was settled by people who had been kicked out of Iceland, which was settled by people who had been kicked out of Norway. And exile was the ultimate punishment reserved for the worst crimes a VIKING! could commit.

You DON'T want to mess with these people!

The worst crimes aren't always badass, though. To my (vague) understanding, for vikings forgery was a worse crime than murder. Forgers aren't necessarily toughguys (not that murderers are, but I have a hard time imagining a viking poisoning someones open-faced sandwich, y'know?)

SurlySeraph
2010-07-12, 05:16 PM
If I remember correctly, the Vikings had similar laws to many Germanic tribes in that more "valorous" crimes were punished less harshly - it was considered much worse to kill a man with a bow than with an axe, and trying to hide the body would get the weregild you had to pay tripled.

EDIT: Oh, and some penance for being off-topic.

The guy's that went to Vinland probably weren't kicked out of Greenland. They were most likely searching for wood. Leifur Eiríksson, the first European to discover America, was the son of Eiríkur Rauđa that was indeed kicked out of Iceland after which he settled Greenland.

Also they're all Icelanders not Norwegians, damn it. :smalltongue:

But it's completely right that this was before nationalism, that they all spoke the same language and considered themselves to belonging to the same group.

This one reminds me both of Kaylee, from Firefly, and of my favourite wizard character.

It reminds me of Agatha Heterodyne after a haircut. Might be the combination of the red hair and the style of clothing.

Found this while looking for pics of Techpriests from Warhammer 40,000. It might be skirting the SFW limit, though. If it is, let me know and I'll remove it (it's ten to midnight at the moment though, so anyone who asks me to remove it, please keep that in mind).

Depends. The images I posted come from the game's gallery. The story has three arcs, and a full run takes roughly 20 hours per arc, a litlte more if you want to see all the endings where you die(there's like 30). (There's not much playing as it's a novel, but wrong choices every now and then kinda kill you in horrible ways).

To be fair, the movie covers the second arc.

A movie that doesn't yet have English subtitles...

... right? Because if there's somewhere I can get it with such I'm jumping all over that.

(Don't get me started on the Hollow Ataraxia translation. Wherefore art thou?)

As for Fate//stay night (I think that's how you write out the title, whatever) it's a GREAT visual novel, intense and detailed writing backed by a (relatively) massive budget. If you have to start with any visual novels, pick this one: it's not some inane love-comedy or hentai-fest, like so many of them out there are. (Euck. Maim kill burn purge cleanse.) It's full of character development, full of magic-babble that somehow manages to sound plausible, full of epic GAR (it even coined the term!), full of general awesome...

... except the eroge, when it suddenly sneaks up on you and leaves you going, "What? Sounds like a bad porn excuse." To top off, most of it is hilariously bad, although I'm not sure if that's Nasu's (the original author) fault or the translators. Oh sure, it "looks" nice, but the writing is... awful. Anything the image might do for you (if you somehow aren't annulled to nudity on your computer screen yet, you pervert you) is instantly squashed by the terrible wording and flow of the writing. Someone on their end needs to read a women's trashy romance novel to figure out how to write good eroge.

My suggestion: don't get the eroge version if you have the choice; it's quite awkward if you have to have friends see it (no, this is not a porn game, it's an extremely complex and well-written epic that Nasu felt the need to jam hentai in for no particularly good reason) and awkward enough for you to read it (seafood analogies what?). Having the non-eroge version would let me read the bloody novel in public - as it is, I have to keep it away from small children just in case they trip over the CG gallery and scream bloody murder.

What's sad is that Nasu can apparently write a scene that actually makes sense: Arcueid's route from Tsukihime felt natural and unforced. Then he somehow failed for all the other routes. Then all of Fate stay night.

The anime isn't good, but it isn't terrible either. At least they made it, unlike Tsukihime. (Cough, inside joke.) They tried to shoehorn a couple of things from other routes in (some more successfully than others; you'll need to have already read the novel to understand some of the references), and obviously had to substitute the eroge out for a Mana Transfer Dragon, and the action is probably a little less epic than you pictured in your head while reading the book, but it's an alright adaptation. So yeah.

... the Nasu-fanatic rests. He has derailed the topic long enough.

... go on, join us...

Ryu as the warrior, Chun li as a thief, Cammy as an Elf/priest, Ken as a knight, etc"

It's as effective as Hi-Metal armour (full plate-like set) and far more effective than Chain armour (chainmail-like set) at weakening attacks. That you can be hit by wyverns larger than many cars and survive when wearing only enough to cover your decency has lead me to believe the hunters of the series are in a D&D-like setting (3.x and onwards, of course) with no player character casters.

You can survive things that would cripple mere mortals and walk away barely slowed (including falling from cliffs, which is often encouraged due to how long it takes to get to some places without doing so). Characters can and do survive attacks which collapse large stone columns, as well as fireballs, acid spit, jets of high-pressure water, attacks cold enough to leave you partially frozen, potent venoms, boulder sized chunks of mud and highly damaging electrical attacks.

Melee combatants regularly face down creatures larger than cars, with claws, horns and other spiked or bladed appendages larger than the character's head, but are almost useless if such a beast flys away to rest. The melee guys then chase the wyverns through blistering deserts and freezing tundra with nought but a drought to dull the temperature. Ranged combatants wield "bowguns" with psuedomagical ammunition. Magical equipment is everywhere, and can be made by taking a load of monster parts to a wyverian blacksmith.

Hunters seem to survive solely on magic healing potions of various strengths, "rations" and steak, grilled anywhere from immediately after hacking it from a downed beast to after a week or more in a non-refridgerated box which also contains various (and often magical or near-magical) herbs, mushrooms, fish, insects, ores, monster dung, claws, fangs, pelts, poisonous or otherwise harmful mushrooms, meats tainted by the same as traps for large monsters, gunpowder, bombs, magical ammunition and assorted valuable but otherwise useless nicknacks. And the meat tastes no worse for it.

I love both Monster Hunter and Dungeons and Dragons (preferably 3.5). The insanity inherent in them makes them fun for lighter, less serious gaming, but both provide challenges which are both difficult and rewarding to defeat.

Note that these are my observations of the MH series, it's presented much more seriously than that. I'm told that the multiplayer makes the game even better, but I've only ever played solo (even after getting MH Tri ready for online play) so I assume it takes the experience from excellent, with occasional frustration (Barioth, still haven't beaten that lightning-fast son of a blizzard), to unbelievable, with periods of finding a serious enough group.

I don't think magic robes give armor bonus, though.

((Except for robes of the archmagi, I think.))

Besides, that also looks almost exactly like the dalish armor looks like on females from Dragon Age, which is explicitly armor (robes are a different class of being entirely).

Beating a dead horse here, but the guy standing on top of the dragon is M.Bison and the dragon is Sagat. For the guy standing on top, it's the classic Bison pose and the dragon is identifiable as Sagat because it has the same chest scar.

Not that it matters at all, but my OCD wont let me let it slide. Technically there is no "armor" slot in D&D (at least not in 3.5); there's a "body" slot, which can be taken up with either armor or robes. Probably at least partially to avoid the "robes aren't armor why the hell are they taking up this slot?" question.

Yeah, but only for the silliest of cinematic campaigns.

(In fact, several GURPS rules originated as April Fools jokes, then found their way into later printings of the rulebook. That might have been one of them.)

The GURPS cinemagraphic rules, yeah. I much preferred the grenade rules.

There are two kinds of grenades, Their Grenades and Your Grenades. When you capture Their Grenades, they become Your Grendades, and vice versa. Their grenades are glorified firecrackers. Your grenades are tactical nuclear devices.

I admit, I'm getting most of my stuff from deviant art now. Searching for fantasy women on google leads to some really disturbing stuff.

So, Clap-San (http://clap-san.deviantart.com/) gives us.

Tips:
- Get Ad-Block Plus
- Get NoScript
- Get a decent Firewall (and well, don't use Internet Exploder, but that's obvious)

Result: No more viruses.

Not needed if you have full version of Norton. I'd rather pay 50 bucks a year to run 1 program that does everything than to rely on 4 separate programs that may or may not play well with each other.

Snake-Aes

They don't do the same things. Adblock stops a requisition from any specified URL. The primary use for it are to keep the screen(and bandwidth) free of ads. Malicious ads are also blocked that way.

They aren't programs but mere browser add-ons; and Norton Systemworks doesn't make your browser any safer. You'll get the same viruses regardless of whether you have it installed or not; your anti-virus may or may not detect them. I'd rather not risk getting the viruses in the first place. And running without a firewall nowadays is a suicide.

Anyways, we need to get back on topic:

Norton doesn't do what adblock does (See above). And there's no antivirus/malware/etc software in the world that can compensate for IE :smallsigh:
Of course, I mostly just dislike Norton for being such a resource hog, but that's neither here nor there.

That one's easy: competent people don't give their enemies easy targets to the throat, heart, lungs, stomach or other miscellaneous organs that armored cleavage or exposed midriff offer. That's something heroes do.

It has to do with(for me at least) the idea that i could go look at scantily clad women on the beach or wherever if i wanted to. As far as fantasy and adventuring type ladies, sure i'd like them to be beautiful but if they don't look like they're equipped properly to actually do things like fight, it defeats the purpose of searching for pictures from that specific genre. Third picture is awesome, but that Abhorsen really is well done.

Going back a bit, but:

Here you go, a humanoid character with a perfectly realistic set of functional wings!
Self-Scrubbed.
I should send a message direct, and will, but thought I'd also ask in here. Any chance for a link to that picture in a private message or something? I'm a sucker for wings of any sort, but perfectly realistic always sounds interesting.

Some girls, some guys, some images much less cheesecakey than others, and hopefully not too many repeats. A certain common theme.

and the real thing:

One is clearly meant for business, and the other is good for nothing but show.

While helpful..that really doesn't explain that much. xD Especially considering the ceremonial one can still be used to whack people.

Hero thing makes sense though. I usually play heroes who laugh (sometimes literally) in the face of danger and that means openly goading it....Or slapping a glamoured enhancment on armor so my character can wear whatever they hell they want and still be protected.

That just means there's a threshold of competence beyond which it doesn't matter whether or not you look competent, or require competent preparation. That doesn't mean a chainmail bikini is a suitable outfit for competent warriors, just like the ceremonial mace doesn't become a suitable weapon for competent warriors just because the great hero of the nation can use it to split skulls in an emergency.

THIS is a mace. The terms are interchangable. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mace)

Callos: It's because the ridiculous skimpy-clothed "warriors" are just meant to be looked at, not to do anything. They don't mean business, they're just perv-fodder. The fully-armoured warriors are just (by appearances) more competent, serious and, well, self-respecting, to be cliche.
It's like going to a job interview for a big-business management job in a stripper's outfit and expecting to be taken seriously. If you get the job, 'snot gonna be cuz of your CV.

On the topic of realistic vs. stripperific armor - has anyone ever actually used the Gloryborn armor template from (3.5) DMGII? It's an actual rules-legal method for wearing utterly impractical armor (something about the inherent magic of Ysgard redirecting blows so that they only hit the protected areas).

There's got to be at least one person behind them that isn't visible except for a few limbs poking out. Either that or the woman in the middle has more than two arms. In fact, I'm thinking at least two people behind them.

It's probably hidden somewhere in that orgy. Though that grey leg on the right belongs to the blue lady. If you follow the top of the leg, it goes right into the place where the hip is located on the woman. While the Blue leg on the other hand, being a left foot doesn't can't be the blue lady's because her torso position doesn't fit with where the leg's coming from.

What's it mean when the "warrior" in question (I like how you put that in quotes. xD) slices you in two then? :smallwink:

And...well I disagree on the fully armored warrior. But that's all personal opinion there. That all depends on the warrior in question and how they behave. In the one d20 modern game I'm playing in right now, one of our most effective combatants is CONSTANTLY in full body armor...she's neither serious (when not in combat) or self-respecting in the least. In the same vein the other party members look far more self-respecting and are in normal clothes. So...depends on the character.

EDIT: Er...Serp, what's going on with your avatar? o.o

Glyph: Like I said, I just buy the glamoured armor-enhancement when not going for the armored warrior look. May be a useless (or close to) waste of 2000 gold but I like it.

Again, it just means that if you're competent enough, you can afford to look incompetent. Superman can go to work in pajamas with his underpants outside the rest of his clothing. He's powerful enough that it doesn't matter what he wears. But in any setting where characters can't expect to defeat the BBEG naked, it matters that they wear functional outfits. Until your skin can deflect a blade, protect it.

The trick, of course, was that she had reinforced the armor with a Mage Armor-type field of force that was most impervious to harm directly over the 'gap' in the armor. Her theory was that the obvious flaw in the defense would be attacked most often, and she could concentrate her magic on that one area to maximize its effectiveness. It's certainly one of the more interesting rationalizations for such an armor design I can recall.

That picture is getting more awesome all the time O.O
What's it mean when the "warrior" in question (I like how you put that in quotes. xD) slices you in two then? :smallwink:Then she's a competent female warrior who still feels the need to unnecessarily put her body on display for oggling. If she does it as a cynical distracting battle tactic and has things in place that counteract the incredible combative disadvantage of exposing vulnerable skin - e.g. aforementioned sneaky magic, or extreme talent - awesome. I would work with a player to create that character. But if you want to take that interpretation, then that extremely niche strategy is extraordinarily disproportionately represented in fantasy art. It is far more simple and likely to assume that the vast majority of such individuals are nothing but eye-candy, pathetic "ceremonial maces", and I would much prefer to see actually competent women represented.

shadow_archmagi
2010-08-11, 08:18 AM
extremely niche strategy

If we assume that, in the D&D world, the secret of divorcing armor fluff from armor crunch is well known (so that armor can look like whatever and function like whatever) then we could see two reasons for it

A. Most armorers prefer to only make skimpy armor for women

B. Since it doesn't have an effect on combat, women opt for the skimpy version for the same reason real women wear skimpy outfits.

The terms are interchangable. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mace)

well it should not be, as a morningstar is a iron or steel ball with spikes. put it on a stick and its a morningstar, put it on a chain and its a flail. a mace differs in construction and shape and thus, I would argue that the terms should NOT be interchangable. I can only hope that the academics get their game straight. :smallamused:

They were used differently by different people in different times in history. The meanings of the words have all been too varied to try to make any serious distinction between them. They've become too watered down; they are now interchangeable. Your definitions for what each is distinct from the other are only your personal definitions, they are not universally held.

I am pretty sure that a Mace stops being a mace and starts being a morningstar when it is spiked. A mace can be knobbed, but when it has actual SPIKES it is considered a morningstar.
and the original meaning is slightly irrelevant. what matters is what we call it, and having maces and morningstars be interchangable is chaotic (and not in a good way) and confusing.
*polishes monocle*

Except different people make different distinctions. That "a Mace stops being a mace and starts being a morningstar when it is spiked" is a distinction that you make, but others don't. Since the distinction is not universal, it's basically meaningless. Would it be more convenient if the terms were more specific and such distinctions could be held? Sure. But we cannot simply dictate definitions - words are defined by how they are used, not how they should be used.

It seems the Wikipedia pages for mace, morningstar, and flail have changed since I last read them. Well, I don't care enough to continue the debate; a more reliable source of information could probably be found to settle this one way or the other, but I'm willing to concede the point - my basis for the debate was Wikipedia, which I will assume was changed to be more accurate, and in any event now that it's changed I have no evidence for my argument.
