Last October (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129233) I made mention of the fact that Alarra's Masters Thesis had been submitted and accepted for publication in a trade journal.

Most of you have probably forgotten about this by now, but the time has finally come! I promised I'd let you all know where to find it when it's finally published, and here it is.

Visual journaling: An intervention to influence stress, anxiety and affect levels in medical students

Abstract

Research has shown that medical students have higher levels of stress and anxiety than the general population, increasing their risk of health problems, mental illness, and suicide. This study looked at the effects of visual journaling as a possible stress-reduction technique. Research took place with students and staff of Eastern Virginia Medical School, with data collected over two sessions consisting of inventory scores of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Y) and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS-X), artwork in their visual journals, and a questionnaire. While the number of participants was not large enough to show statistical significance, there was a general decrease in anxiety and negative affect levels among nearly all participants from the pretest to the posttest. This study showed that visual journaling was a promising intervention for stress reduction in a medical environment; however, more research is needed to justify its implementation.

You know, in addition to this, you can find two of Alarra's short stories and a poem in the latest issue of Diversion Magazine (http://www.diversionmagazine.blogspot.com).

Also, I remember this! Way to go, Alarra!

You can see the whole thing here (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6V9J-4Y05DCR-1&_user=10&_coverDate=04%2F30%2F2010&_rdoc=10&_fmt=high&_orig=browse&_srch=doc-info%28%23toc%235900%232010%23999629997%231876685% 23FLA%23display%23Volume%29&_cdi=5900&_sort=d&_docanchor=&_ct=14&_acct=C000050221&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=10&md5=7c231c72cef3fecfe1812c9dd4eed159) for twenty dollars (US).

I think. I'm not sure what to make of "available online 21 December 2009" since it's only now being published.

P.S.: Congratulations!

Sweet! well done.

and It took me a lot longer than that to get anything published, -certainly not my masters thesis, which was dire, (in my opinion, though it passed.. meh) so thats pretty impressive. No idea what the impact factor of that journal is, -well outside my field, but good job indeed.

Hmm, wonder if I still have free access to SD through work... Yes! I do.

Thanks, guys. I was....am....excited. =) And yeah, I suppose we did celebrate, we went out to dinner and saw how to tame your dragon and alice in wonderland. Though, at the time, I hadn't thought of it as a celebration, just hadn't been out in forever. We'll consider it a celebration though. =)

And it sounds like we'll be getting a grant this summer to replicate the study through NIH, and will also be doing at at GW, and the woman who's working on the study with me is trying to get me appointed as an adjunct professor there to make sure that I can be a primary investigator, rather than just a collaborator on the next study. So....that should be fun. *is slightly terrified of all of this*
