How would you make a PC like MacGuyver in a 'generic' dnd setting?

An artificer comes to mind pretty quick, but how would you do it WITHOUT magic?

In a similar vein, who would win in a fight: McGuyver or the Ateam?

Psionic artificer ? :smallamused:

No, seriously, there just isn't enough choice and utility in the non-magical items. D&d's equivalent for chemistry, alchemy, doesn't have nearly as many applications, and you know what they say about catgirls and physics.
Magic in d&d is our world's science. Definitely artificer.

Also, they team up against a greater evil.

And A-Team > McGuyver. They have the numbers, the widespread knowledge, and lots of guns.

Artificer is a good choice, but if you don't want magic just plain rogue is great. Disable device, tons of skill points, and you get escape artist.

That said he wouldn't be much good solo in a fight, especially because of a certain unarmed Swordsage who PITTIES DA FOO.

Factotum is the best MacGyver, no doubt. It's the ultimate skillmonkey and can alter it's class features to adapt to new circumstances each day. I guess it's not entirely magic-free because you can cherry pick a couple divine/arcane spells per day. Prestige class into Chameleon to get even more awesome class features that emulated another class's class features, you'll never be in a circumstance you can't adapt to. Also, for their class skills it literally says "All" how can you get more awesome than that?

But McGuyver is also O'Neill, so he gets SG-1. :D

If you're open to homebrew, you might want to try the jury-rigger (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141294) prestige class. It's very mcguyver-like. Factotum is the best entry.

If you prefer third-party, Chaositech isn't explicitly magical and Chaositechnicians can do some awesome things with them on the spot.

Also, I think that MacGyver picture is infested with malware. Chrome keeps telling me to avoid this page.

!

That's weird. I mean, it's a Wikimedia picture, the one that That Other Wiki (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThatOtherWiki) uses on their MacGyver page.

Odd. Sounds like a false alarm to me--Shawn doesn't intentionally host any malware on his site, just bitchin' webcomics, though I suppose he could have contracted some without his knowledge.

Hang on a sec, I'll turn up my antivirus stuff and see if I can find out what's going on.

Firefox with AdBlock Plus also regards it as malware, and declines to participate

In other news, I would definitely call MacGyver an Artificer. Magic is the new Technology, according to Ebberon, and he's infamous for making widgets out of the random crap you find lying around, which Artificers can manage with their class abilities.

MacGuyver > A-Team. Neither ever kill, making the guns something moot.

MacGuyver will overcome being bound and gagged in a janitor's closet with nothing more than the items he finds on hand. (so even if A-Team captures him, they can't hold him)

The A-Team have no such abilities.

Ack! Got that fixed quick, thanks for the warning. Poor Shawn - Clockworks is one of my favorite webcomics. :smallfrown:

And for the record, apparently MacGyver wins:
