Can you edit .pdf files while they're in .pdf format on Adobe Reader? If so, how?

I have a calendar from Ignatius's calendar generator (http://www.eightcharacters.com.au/calendar/) and I want to add holidays in.

I believe Adobe Reader does exactly that, reads PDF files. I think you'll need Acrobat to do that, but I don't know much about it.

Yes, you need Acrobat or Acrobat Pro for that. It still isn't ideal; PDF is a format that's intend to be left as is. Acrobat is great for making forms electronically fillable (once you've finalized the layout you want on the non-changing things), or adding some multimedia to your document, but it's not really intended to modify documents once they're in the PDF format.

adobe ---> acrobat----> save as tiff. ----> open tiff with paint.

There the pixels are not messed up and you can add text if need be. Save as tiff, then you can save the tiff. back into acrobat and from there transform it into adobe.

Might seem a bit complicated but it retains the image pixel count and lets you modify as needed without ruining the quality.

There are also tools for exporting to svg, which I've found to be more useful.

I haven't been able to get SVG to behave on my computer with any tools I possess, up to and including Photoshop CS4. They display in my browser when I encounter them online, but other than that I can't get them to open properly.

Have you tried stuff in Illustrator(which is far better with .svg's), instead of PS?

Prolly, hmm yeah.

Tried Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/)? It might help since I think the base safe file is .svg there. Beware of crashes with large documents though.

All my experience in SVG has been with Inkscape. It's got a bit of a learning curve, but it's an awesome program.

The base file type is an SVG, but it's extended with Inkscape metadata. Not that that really matters.

Yes, photoshop doesn't work with vectors graphics (which is what .svg is) so you're better off using a program that does, like illustrator or inkscape

If it's just a one-off thing, you could use the free trial of eXPert PDF Editor (http://www.visagesoft.com/products/pdfeditor/downloads.php). It's brilliant.

Actually, you're very much in luck. They create the file in Word. So all you have to do is save the .pdf as an .rtf and insert whatever you like. (Just tried it - I have Acrobat).
