View Full Version : April 26th is cleavage day: FOR SCIENCE!

...Sedighi claims that not dressing modestly causes earthquakes. If so, we should be able to test this claim scientifically.
...

...
On Monday, April 26th, I will wear the most cleavage-showing shirt I own. Yes, the one usually reserved for a night on the town. I encourage other female skeptics to join me and embrace the supposed supernatural power of their breasts.
...

I think spreading the word to other messageboards you haunt and everyone you know is in order.

There are two characteristics of man-boob caused by excess fat and not a hormonal imbalance: down-sloping nipples and lack of cleavage. You'll have to find other, less female ways to look slutty.

Women dress in a way that would lead men to a path of sin. Men then proceed to walk down this path, quite happily too. Earthquakes happen.

Seriously. Science is not that hard, you just have to concentrate on the essential :smalltongue:

I am almost positive there will be an earthquake. The question is whether or not there will be an interesting earthquake anywhere interesting. A 7.1 in the middle of a barren wasteland doesn't attract much attention. A 1.1 right under all but the worst built city would barely be noticed. Get the picture?

Edit: Personally, I would rather there weren't any interesting quakes anywhere interesting. I don't like it when people die.

Also, on an unrelated note, cleavage day is tomorrow. I just set the earthquake machine to trigger on the 26th to see how much it panics people.

So... apparently some of my friends will be going around topless. And one may be going bottomless, as well. I suspect I may need to put on a neck brace, I have a tendency to glance downward a lot but doing so on monday may result in slow, torturous death.

how about we make this an anual event, held on 21 december? That way we should filter out all the background static from the normal cleavage and we could actually quantify the tremor-per-boob.

Nah, the fundamentally-minded cleric in question was railing against 'immodest dress promoting promiscuous behavior' in general. The blogger responding simply chose cleavage because, as she said in her blog, she happens to have it, and encourages other people to choose whatever form of immodest dress they like best.

Uhm...coincidence, right? Right?
*nervous glance*

Because if immodest dress = earthquakes, my college is EFFED.

Immodesty doesn't cause earthquakes in and of itself. I think most sane people agree on that, and obviously some not-so-sane folks as well (welp, even I'm on board with "The display of any portion of someone's anatomy has no noticeable impact on the seismography of this or any other planet, unless someone out there is *severely* over acceptable biomass levels. Tyranids, I'm looking at you. Don't make me thwack you again. I mean it!" school of thought).

That said, I know if I were an all powerful and omniscient being, and I saw this sort of scale response being mobilized over a silly comment like that, I might be tempted to kick over a few fault lines early and watch the pandemonium as people with only flimsy understanding of causation, correlation, and the difference between panic and all switch to wearing shapeless potato-sack garments.

Sadly, I don't think I can manage that without casualties... Not omniscient or powerful enough... :smallfrown:

The Taiwanese one was the biggest since the 13th... not really big enough to be that meaningful though.

It does, however, further highlight how important it is to define your primary outcome(s) before starting the experiment. Currently, the only at all well-defined one we've got is a quake in Indiana (which would be really unlikely under ordinary circumstances). However, since the experiment has gone global, it's questionable how valid that would be, and we don't even have a magnitude for that. I'd suggest, therefore, something like the following outcomes:

1) A quake somewhere of at least magnitude 8.0 (the strongest in the past 30 days was 7.8 (http://www.iris.edu/seismon/last30.html))
2) A quake somewhere at least as devastating as that in Port-au-Prince
3) Lots and lots and lots of quakes >=4.0 (let's say... at least 30).
4) At least one quake of at least 4.0 5.5 in Indiana.

There's also the question of how we define the 26th. I'd suggest using GMT/UTC, as the most universal. Sound good?

Timing is everything!
The Australians start it of by sending of a tremor/force-wave through the earth which later on gets hit from the other direction by the US wave, and following the laws of resonance either amplify the wave or eliminates it.
If we could calculate the speed of said waves then we could center the effect on one spot and create an earthquake of a proportion unknown to man! :smalltongue:

Ah. I've changed it up a few notches to 5.5, which would make this the largest in over 100 years if it happened (and therefore, much the least likely of the four - I may have over-reacted).

Far too arbitrary. Clearly we simply need to compare the total force yield of today's earthquakes to those of days in the past week/month. If possible, we should also be statistically rigorous. That's right, Immodest dress day EVERY fortnight for the next 5 years!

The guy in front of him said it wasn't a problem since he was staring too, but the point is is that it COULD have been horrible. -shrug-

You have to admit that, in the grand scheme of things, an earthquake leveling a city is a much bigger catastrophe than a local car accident. Keep in mind that's going off of number of people killed/people touched by the event in some way.

I can't even remember what day she said it was now, but I just thought I'd share.

This is getting ridiculously oversexualized. I don't know if my anti-sexuality powers work over the Internet, but I should at least try.

You're making fools of yourselves because of something a Muslim cleric said. He's not even a real cleric, he's probably a commoner. You should all realize by now that nobody wants to see you expose yourself like this. You know, I'm feeling kind of sick. You're gonna make me throw up if you don't put a shirt on. If you want to express your... Sexuality in the comfort of your own home, go ahead. As long as I don't have to see or hear it, I don't care. But when you're in public, try wearing some real clothes. Or maybe put a tarp over yourself. Don't forget to wear clothes under the tarp too, though.Oh please. There's so much wrong with this I don't know where to begin. So, I'll just list a couple:
- Get over it.
- There's a difference between "wearing a low-cut top and/or short skirt/shorts" and "going around topless". My choice to wear a bust-oriented top is a long way from "exposing" myself, and moreover is none of your damn business.
- To a large extent, sexualisation is the point of the exercise. To an even larger extent, sexualisation is beside the point of it. They're not mutually exclusive: the point of the experiment was that it was alleged that "immoral" (according to the standards of a hardline religious fundamentalist, mind you) dress increases sin which results in earthquakes, so sexualisation is intrinsic to the experiment. However, the reason for doing the experiment is to address and counter, through humour and ridicule, an absolutely absurd and potentially dangerous statement.
- Related to the above, I think that, at least in this thread, the men are doing more of the so-called "sexualisation" than the participating women.
- Tarp? Why not a hijab? Would that be "unsexual" enough for you?

Ugh. You feel sick...

Whoah. Whoah.

*steps between serp and mega*

Mega, the whole point of the boobquake is about not being forced to dress modestly. Telling everyone to put concealing clothes on is a little like wandering into an NRA meeting and telling people guns are wrong. It's just a little too forceful for the audience you're trying to address.

It doesn't really matter, anyway, because all I did today was work on my car and help out my family. So, really, the only way anyone could have seen anything was if they're related to me (eew, no!) or if they like watching people fix up their car, with oil and grime all over me.

So, that's my excuse for not having pictures.

Don't know what you're meant to be contradicting, there, but that's pretty meaningless. It was never thought that there would be no earthquakes at all - I'm not sure about the exact rate, but I wouldn't really be surprised if there are earthquakes happening near-constantly. ONE earthquake is meaningless; if there is a significant increase in the number and/or severity of earthquakes, then there is some evidence. But even that's quite meaningless, scientifically, unless we do repeated randomised tests over large periods of time (not necessarily "everyone goes scantily-dressed for a year", more like "everyone goes scantily dressed for a few days at a time, over a number of years").

And, as someone said above, apparently, that one severe earthquake aside, the number of quakes was lower than average. Which is a nice touch

I'm gonna have to agree with the guy on the radio I heard today. I think this is a bad idea. As much as I am a HUGE fan of boobies, they are rather distracting when put on obvious display. The risk to men in the workplace is already astoundingly high for sexual harrasement charges, real or misplaced. A misplaced glance, intentional or otherwise has a STUNNINGLY HIGH chance to earn you a reprimand if Chesty McBoobies decides to say one small thing to HR, and the annonymous reporting that every company I've ever worked for has makes it easy to sabatoge some poor guy who may not even have any idea whats going on.

There are a couple studies out about how men make generally poorer decisions while sexually aroused. Its pretty well documented. Why should we be held responsible when someone puts the goods in the window and we get a peak of them as we walk by? Surely blame can't be placed solely on the guy.

Seriously. I LOVE boobies. Still, its not fair.

I see those comments as saying to a girl, "You're sexy and that's wrong." WTF kind of a contradictory message is that? You're not good enough if you're not sexy, but being sexy is wrong? So yeah, it's OK to want to be sexy (hell, I want to be sexy). It's NORMAL to want to be sexy. Go be sexy. Sexy is not wrong.
