Alright, this class is intended as a fusion between another class I made a sort of generic half-caster.

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: A Crystal Caster is proficient with all simple weapons and 3+Int mod martial weapons. A Crystal Caster is not proficient with armor

Crystal Blade(Su): A Crystal Caster can manifest any one-handed melee weapon they are proficient with as a standard action. This weapon is made of crystal and disintegrates after leaving the Crystal Caster's hand for 1 round. For sundering purposes, Crystal Blades have 5 hit points for light weapons and 10 for one-handed weapons. A Crystal Blade has hardness equal to 5+1/2 Crystal Caster level.

Spells: A Crystal Caster casts a limited number of arcane spells spontaneously. These are chosen from the Sorcerer/Wizard spell list. Bonus Spells are based off of Intelligence, with Spells Known is shown on the table below. Caster level for these spells is equal to the caster's Crystal Caster level.

Metamagic(Su): A Crystal Caster can apply this many spell levels of metamagic without increasing casting time. Multiple metamagic effects can be applied without increasing casting time as long as the total levels are less than the amount shown on the table.

Crystal Skin(Ex): A Crystal Caster's skin slowly becomes tougher, giving the caster a natural armor bonus equal to the number found on the table.

Crystal Blade Bonus(Su): A Crystal Caster can apply special qualities or other bonuses to their Crystal Blade equal to the number shown. This bonus can be a simple enhancement bonus, or it can be added as special qualities. For example, the Flaming quality can be added to a Crystal Blade with a +1 bonus instead of the +1 to attack and damage rolls.

Meta Crystal(Su): A Crystal Caster can choose to absorb energy from a crystal to power their metamagic. For each level of metamagic paid for, to a maximum of the numer of the table, a Crystal Caster can destroy a number of crystals worth 300 GP.

I'm iffy about Meta Crystal. I mainly put it in because it both fit the flavor and filled some dead levels, leaving the class with none.

3rd and 7th get new spell levels. That's living enough for me.

Ah yes. That's true.

Still, kinda cool class. It's like Sorcerer, but trades away spells per day for class features.

Thanks. I'm putting together one of the classes this came from in another window, and am wondering if +9 NA is too much for this class, as the other one would logically get more.

It's called Invisible mode.

So free (or gold costing) metamagic, and soulknife like abilities, and ecent casting?

It's probably T3, like the bard or the psiwar. Not bad if that was your intent.

Yeah. I wasn't sure what tier this would fit in, and was a bit worried that some of the abilities were too much.

Also, I'm posting the class this idea branched off from soon. Glad I had it on my clipboard, Firefox just crashed.

It is a bit weird, as a half-caster that's good at metamagic.

PersonMan

I've never liked the whole 'metamagic=longer casting time' for spontaneous casters, so I solved to problem-to an extent.

4th level spells.

"Class ability" should probably be taken out then. :smalltongue:

...Right.

No, wait! I'll just give them a new ability....

Class Ability: Choose any one non-scaling ability from any class. You now have it.

This class + Scion of the Mirror (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146665) = a potential BBEG for a campaign I'm running.

Nice. Hmm...Maybe a mirror made from incredibly polished crystal? Tell me how it turns out if you use it.

Since I made the Crystal Hunter a prestige class, I'm thinking of doing this one, too. Is it a good idea? If so, how should I pace the abilities, and what should the requirements be?

Capstones away!

No, seriously. You'll have to limit this.

No, seriously. You'll have to limit this.

It was a joke. I don't think it'd work well as a capstone, anyways.

"You've been casting spells and using crystals for years, and have grown incredibly powerful. Now, as you become even stronger, you can...Detect traps? What?'

Still thinking. Maybe a level of metamagic reduction, non-stackable to avoid cheese?

I thought it was for 7th level. :smallamused:

I figured it was a joke, but hey. I practically have a job here. It's good to be safe! :smalltongue:

It works as a base class. I vote keep it as is.

The magic bonus is a bit late. I think it should start at 3rd level. Also, the Meta Crystal ability smells like something made of fermented milk. It might not be as bad, since they don't get cleric spells or those above 5th level. But still, something to keep an eye out for. In any case, why did you pick 300 gp? Why not a more even number like 500?

PersonMan
2010-06-02, 10:17 AM
By 'magic bonus' do you mean the Crystal Blade Bonus? I added it later because this wasn't primarily a melee class. The melee-focused one, the Crystal Hunter, gets more bonuses, and earlier.

@Metacrystal stuff: It can only be used for three levels of metamagic, at level 19. I don't really think that it's all that much of a problem. I chose 300/level...because it just seemed right. I'm not sure about 500, I'll think about it.

I like crystally classes! Now I'm gonna get all business-like with my critique. I'll only point out things I think need fixing up; so you can be assured everything else is A-OK!

Crystal Caster
Hit Die: d6
Class Skills: Knowledge(arcana)(Int), Spot(Wis), Listen(Wis), Spellcraft(Int), Concentration(Con), Appraise(Int)
Skill Points Per Level: 4+Int mod, x4 at 1st level

Standard formatting puts the skills in alphabetical order.

Additionally, this is nowhere near enough skills for a 4 points/level class, let alone one based on intelligence. Craft and Profession at least, more Knowledge skills... maybe some physical or thievy skills?

Crystal Blade(Su): A Crystal Caster can manifest any one-handed melee weapon they are proficient with as a standard action. This weapon is made of crystal and disintegrates after leaving the Crystal Caster's hand for 1 round.

"Made of crystal." Hardness and hitpoints on this crystal would be necessary for sundering rules.

Spells: Known as Sorcerer, cast spontaneously. Chosen from the Sorcerer/Wizard spell list. Bonus Spells are based off of Intelligence
I would suggest typing out the Spells Known table, as sorcerers get higher-level spells than this class and that just seems strange to me. And what's the caster level? Full class? Half class?

Crystal Blade Bonus(Su): A Crystal Caster can apply special qualities or other bonuses to their Crystal Blade equal to the number shown.
This needs a far more in-depth explanation. I suggest checking out the soulknife in the SRD for (what I assume is) a similar class feature. More directly: What is the action to imbue a weapon with a quality? Do you gain that +X enhancement bonus? By "equal to the number shown," does the ability have to have an equivalent bonus equal to the number shown, or is that number how many enhancements I can have at once (i.e. +2 means I can apply two enhancements of any sort)? How long do these qualities last? Can I change them again?

Meta Crystal(Su): A Crystal Caster can choose to absorb energy from a crystal to power their metamagic. For each level of metamagic paid for, to a maximum of the numer of the table, a Crystal Caster can destroy a number of crystals worth 300 GP.

This becomes a negligible cost at higher levels in standard wealth... and low wealth games it won't be doing much. I am also iffy about it, but I'm not sure what to change.

PersonMan

Alrighty, then! Looks like I've got more stuff to change.

I'll start working on this stuff now.

EDIT: I wasn't sure how to split the columns of the table at first, but I'm figuring it out. The full Spells Known table should be ready soon.

EDIT 2: Finished.

Total Changes: Reorganized skills, gave them Know(all), and Survival. Added Crystal Blade info along with Crystal Blade Bonus stuff.

Oh... I didn't notice that (both of them). Carry on, then.

EDIT: Though, for the metamagic ability (not the crystal metamagic), do metamagic costs even go up to 5?

PersonMan
2010-06-05, 08:58 PM
It's for separate metamagic feats(such as Maximize+Empower). I'll add that.
