Some people might know the great fun that were the Psionic Motivators and Eberron Motivators on the wizards forum.

I come up with good ideas once in a while, and I would also really like to see what other people in the playground come up with, so let's start our very own motivator thread!
Apparently the Dungeons & Dammes threads were considered okay, so I assume there's nothing wrong with this one either.

If you want to create your own motivators, chose a picture and use the convenient tool found here (http://bighugelabs.com/motivator.php).
Important: The site does NOT save your finished motivator, so you have to upload it somewhere else first, before you can post it here. I like to use ImageShack (http://imageshack.us/), but every other site works as well.

As always with pictures, please use the [.Spoiler][./Spoiler] tags.

So, let's get this thing started. I expect a lot of OotS references.
And of course, you just can not do this without that other reoccuring reference. :smallwink:

The one with the monk shows a freaky liquid with the unusual physical property that it will climb up the sides of its container.

Though I also don't know how that relates specifically to the monk.

you could just download it and get rid of the borders. However, I used to have it on my computer somewhere. it's called "the bride of Lucifer" I think. the version I had was called that and I don't think I'd ever call a drawing that.

I'd just give it a try on deviantart and search for "bride of lucifer".

Which I just did, and the fourth result in the list brought me this (http://noah-kh.deviantart.com/art/bride-of-lucifer-11242427).
But probably still too small for a good wallpaper.

I thought monks slowly fall next to walls... :smallconfused:

They do. But the whole point of the Monks is achieving what seems surnatural and un-explainable feats with very weird physical proprieties.

Like the wall-climbing drop.

I've made exactly one demotivator. I'm very proud of it.
I took a picture of the creator of a site I hung out on, who put the link as "Trying to moderate Randomness" (the off-topic subforum is title Randomness, and is very... unruly). The result. (http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj156/absolmorph/RandomnessForm.jpg) It's currently in a sticky that has a ton of pictures of various users on the site.
Now that I've given my little anecdote of demotivator-creation...

These are awesome.
Especially the Paladin one with him flying over the dragon. Though, that may be because I friggin' love paladin flavor.

Looks like a totally metal baby still inside the womb. And the mother is posing naked, using her arms to cover up the parts that would knock the rating up beyond what this forum allows.

I'm not sure where it's from originally, but I know I've seen it in a book of strange maps. There is, apparently, a corresponding website (http://strangemaps.wordpress.com/). I haven't found that map on the site yet so I'm not sure what the original source is, but you could probably find it eventually.

Edit- Ah, that'd be it. It's still a fun site to browse through, though.

Oh. Didn't know Elminster used to have a long beard and pointy hat. I've never been much interested in the Forgotten Realms, so I only knew him from the articles on the Wizards homepage.

And the girl is Kylie the Tout, from Planescape. Not sure what she's doing on there, she's just a midlevel Thief working as a city guide in Sigil. Guess they just wanted iconics from every setting. There would have been better people for that. Rowan Darkwood, perhaps.

Could the Space marine be from Spelljammer? That's a setting not covered yet.

Ah, thank you. (Adds to watching list)Play the original VN of Fate/stay night if possible - the anime is still pretty awesome, but it only covers the first route of the VN (which is universally considered the weakest). Characters who are unlikeable in the anime storyline become walking awesome by the end of the VN.

On the Nanoha one, the main characters are basically blaster sorcerers. In the second season a bunch of "knights" from an ancient theocracy show up and overpower them with "cartridges" which they expend to boost their spells. THIS SEEMS VERY FAMILIAR, I thought.

Yes.

Yes that is exactly what I mean.

Also: Shaman King the anime is okay. The original manga is a little better, although for the longest time it had no ending, so the anime and manga differ substantially in the last part. And for that matter they differ substantially everywhere else but at least the plot is pretty similar.

The Nanoha anime are good. Start with Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. Try not to be put off by the stereotypical first few episodes. Or, alternatively, by the sudden genre switch to a Super Robot show without the robots.

Also. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCcmvS7j3dE)

I think I've found my next character.

I'd just give it a try on deviantart and search for "bride of lucifer".

Which I just did, and the fourth result in the list brought me this (http://noah-kh.deviantart.com/art/bride-of-lucifer-11242427).
But probably still too small for a good wallpaper.

I admit I laughed at this. Though that picture terrifies me, can anyone provide a link to the story behind it?Unbeknownst to all, the alien spies hid on Earth masquerading as a basketball team.

One day, a group of high school friends overheard them planning to take over the world in the locker room, but since no one would have believed them, they had no options but to start a baseball team on their own, to reach the championship, challenge the aliens and then unmask them at the live broadcast.

The game was about to end, and our heroes still hadn't revealed the alien presence (and they were losing). Bravely, the captain of their team went for the last desperate attempt to save the Earth. He ran to intercept the commander of the alien spies and reached out…

[Edit]: Basketball, baseball, Bananaball, it's all the same.

Unbeknownst to all, the alien spies hid on Earth masquerading as a baseball team.

I figured it'd be something like that. God bless those loony basketballing heroes :smallwink:

Yes, actually. Through a clever trick, they convinced the alien baseball team to face them in a game of basketball. And since the aliens were all small and well adapted to hitting things with sticks, but not dribbling, they lost horribly.

Not so much D&D as a pet peeve for the default assumptions of D&D.

What is the pet peeve? The medieval stasis presented in many books, or people including technology not fitting with the medieval theme? Because I've seen people annoyed by both.

Cannon were invented in the Medieval period. As were guns. There is nothing not fitting about them, especially if you are going to include plate armour.
The fact that no one gets better at anything, including improving, if any, gunpowder weaponry beyond a bombard or matchlock, also gets me.

I think the default assumption of D&D books is that the fantasy world is on a similar track to ours, but unlike us they had magic. As such technology took a back seat and is therefore behind where we were in that sort of time period.

If that was true, we would have the tippy-verse, or something like it. Castles were high technology in their day, dragging stones from quarries who knows how many miles away, as was building the intricate joints and flutting of a set of plate armour. Both were constantly improved over the actual medieval period.

Actually, I didn't mean it like that. I know how early cannons and the first portable guns were around. Doesn't mean I haven't seen people claiming that you couldn't have them in the middle ages.

Also, the gun in the first picture doesn't look very medieval.

If "imrpoving anything" was true, everybody would have napalms, IVth generaltion fighter planes and plastic bags instead of more "fanstasy" burials.

It's fantasy, so I don't why bother about it so much.

You know, and I know. It's the idea it is "not fitting with the medieval theme" that grates.

My efforts to find a dwarf with a gun that wasn't a Warhammer fig were. . .problematic.

You should define "progress" (if I lived in such scenery like on pic, I would indeed wan't no progress :smalltongue:).

Then explain why some fantasy, different, and all world should progress in the way that European society progressed.

It was one time very specific thing that happened in one certain "setting" from different reason.

Up to XXth century you could find thousands of African or South American, Australian, societies not "progressing" at all.

THey were somehow "progressed" in imperial age (and the process lasts up to today), but without influence, they would certainly go in very different way.

I think there were no default assumptions, there was no design, and there isn't any coherent world directly supported by the mechanics. Except planescape.

Yes, but the medieval wordl was progressing. And if their was no progress, either magical or mundane, there wouldn't be castles or any of that rot, it would be sorcerers casting create food and water and protection from elements. Because that's all you need to survive.

The societies all around the earth also were progressing.

They were doing thousands of things aside those needed for survive.

Inkas, Aztecs and few Africans kingdoms were building impressive "castles" even though they obviously skipped one "important" step - iron age

And sorcerers can't cast create food and protection from elements, because those are unmundane things of magic, unsuitable to everyday task.

The mechanics says otherwise of course, but for the sake of the world actually working, and not turning to Tippyverse, we must assume that magic's not so trivial.

Is someone want to assume otherwise, it's his will. It's all imagination anyway.

First, striving for constant progress is a very recent thing.

The ancient greeks for example were quite smart and actualy discovered that they could produce movement out of steam.

However, they prefered to keep it to theory and let slaves do all the heavy labour.

The egyptians built the freaking pyramids and super-dungeons that endured millenias, but they aparently never considered using that amazing technology to make more pratical stuff than glorified tombstones.

Plate armor is indeed something very complex...But it costs a freaking 1500 GP! That's actualy as much as most minor magic items out there! Only the elite can afford it.

So, yes, it's more than perfectly reasonable that there's powerfull magic but tippy verse doesn't happen because only the elite can use it, and the elite is too busy siting on their towers and being arrogant while the peasants work to death in miserable conditions.

As for "we don't need no stinking progress"... just put castle Neuschwanstein in that picture. Built in the 19th century to look like a fairy tale castle. And thousands of tourists get herded through every year, looking at the great "medieval" architecture. Looks like the Disney Logo, really. Or perhaps the other way round.

Actually, I built a setting once that started with two basic assumptions:

a) Magic makes medieval warfare superfluous.
b) Everyone lives in demiplanes on the ethereal.

Of course, after the age of high magic, everything crashed and people lived isolated on small ethereal demiplanes, unable to get out.
Fun little setting, really.

Cannon were invented in the Medieval period. As were guns. There is nothing not fitting about them, especially if you are going to include plate armour. You're talking about a period of a thousand years, 5th to 15th century; the end of that period overlaps the Renaissance (14th - 16th century), depending on what region you're talking about.

Hand held guns only appeared at all during the last hundred or so (some time in the 14th century), and they were still fairly rare. So it's not unreasonable for someone to say that in a medieval based campaigns, guns are indeed out of place, since this is often the case.

really, in a world with magic there's a significant lack of motivation to advance beyond bows and cross bows through non-magical means, because you can get the advantages of guns (compact/cheap ammunition, faster firing rate than crossbow, harder hitting and more accurate than non-magical bows/cross bows, etc) strictly through magic. If you think about it, any world with magic in it probably has 50% of the people who are doing non-magical based research compared to a world without magic, so it's going to advance non-magically MUCH slower than the real world.

I don't mind playing a medieval setting, I like it in fact, I just don't like the feeling that if I were to time travel 2,000 years into the future, or more, people would have the exact same fashion, language and culture, much less technology, either mundane or magical.
