Just started A game @lvl3

Male Elan Fighter1/Psion(telepath)2
str-13
dex-12
con-14
int-15
wis-14
cha-12
Feats - Point blank, Precise, Skill Focus(concentration), Psicrystal Affinity.

Would It be useful to aim at Slayer (despite the very low amounts of aberations or other psionic creatures), or is there something better floating about? Keep in mind I am not really gishing, I just wanted easy pointblank/precise shot, and some proficiencies via the fighter level.

Slayer is one of the better/more powerful psionic PrCs in a WotC supplement, as it only sacrifices one manifester level.

If you can get ahold of them, and your DM will allow you to use them, I'd highly recommend you take a look through Hyperconscious (http://www.montecook.com/mpress_Hyper.html) and Untapped Potential (http://dreamscarredpress.com/main/index.php?page=shop.product_details&category_id=1&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=5&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=29&vmcchk=1&Itemid=29). They're 3rd party books, but there's a lot of really interesting, flavorful, and generally well-balanced psionic material in them.

Generally, Ranger is better 1-level dip than Fighter thanks to the skill points and getting Track (which you'll need anyways to enter Slayer), and doubly so for a character like an archer that tends to hide and snipe and such.

Make sure you take it at first level, for delicious skills points!

Crystal Master (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040625d) is 8/9 manifesting and thus a viable alternative to slayer. Many of the gems are quite useful. Stretching for the capstone gives you an additional two gems; depending on your setup and concept this may well be worthwhile.

Any chance you can get Int to 16? that 15 is bugging me. I'd put the 14 in dex rather than Wis, as well.

I prefer the Sanctified Mind from Lords of Madness to the Slayer when building from low levels. Its class abilities are flashier and more front-loaded than Slayer's.

Also, it you don't have to jump through the hoop of killing an illithid at low levels.

That's the XPH Illithid Slayer. The SRD Slayer (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/prestigeClasses/slayer.htm) doesn't have a "kill X" requirement.

Kill what illithid? I don't see anything about illthids here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/prestigeClasses/slayer.htm). :smallwink:

There's nothing saying you can't take both, in any case. Slayer is somewhat more flexible in that it requires fewer skills and there's no alignment restriction. Neither has Autohypnosis as a class skill and that makes little Johnny cry. :smallfrown:

Edit: Augh! I've been ninja'd! *flails*

If that isn't houseruled in, more power to you.

Still, the SM's Daze immunity, better feat prereq, smite, grapple resist and PR trounce the Slayer's very specific favored enemy and bad-tasting brain any day, IMO.

Ah, the joy of WotC copyrights, making PrCs more available everyday!

If you build the character at high levels, I completely agree.
But it's a long way from ECL 3 to 15.

Damn! I though this would be for a build on the oots character Elan, not the race.

Yes - where are those Bard levels ? :elan:

I guess its too late for you to change (since you appear to have started playing this character) but 2 Ranger levels will get you an archery feat and some more skillpoints.

As far as feats go, try this trick out: Body Fuel; Elan's Enhanced Resilience; Mind Over Body; Wand of Healthful Rest = win!

you'll be able to take 100's of pts of dmg, no prob.

The stats were rolled in order, I couldn't move'em. I'm already playing, so I must either lose another caster level for ranger or waste a feat on track. I don't really want more archery feats, I just wanted to use rays accurately.

Also energy ray sonic is only way to pick locks.

GM let me sub out the Fighter for Ranger (still 1lvl), lost SF(concentration) and 2hp gained track, survival4, Know(dungeon)4, spot4, and search4. Now I am just weighing whether or not I want to enter slayer faster (more ranger), or get more powah (more Psion)

Really, as soon as you have the BAB for it, you should go for it, IMO.
