yo, i was wondering how Untyped damage interacts with DR, immunities and the like.

specifically, the Killing Shadows mystery from ToM

Apprentice, Eyes of Darkness
Level/School: 3rd/Transmutation
Range: 30 ft.
Effect: Cone
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will half
Spell Resistance: Yes
Your eyes turn black and shoot forth a shadowy cone of punishment.
Creatures within a cone of killing shadows take 1d8 points of damage per caster level (maximum 10d8), or half that amount on a successful Will save.

It bypasses.

DR affects things that strike as weapons. Killing Shadows is (for the purposes of this discussion) a spell. It ignores DR.

Its a spell so by default it bypasses DR.

d'oh. i didn't actually know that DR worked that way. pardonnez moi.

and as it's "untyped" i assume that "immune to xXx" won't help at all?

Immune to X only blocks X. Untyped is Y. Or even Z: either way no blockage.

and would i be right in thinking that once Killing Shadows becomes an Su ability, it then bypasses Spell Resistance?

No, it says right in the description that Spell Resistance can block it.

No, it says right in the description that Spell Resistance can block it.

doesn't that only apply when cast as a Spell or as a Spell Like Ability?

once a shadowcaster get's access to Master path mysteries, all their Initiate Path mysteries become Spell Like Abilities and their Apprentice Path mysteries become Supernatural abilities.....

You're right, casting it as a Su ability (but not a spell-like ability) would bypass SR.

SRD link (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm)

Table: Special Ability Types

{table]|Extraordinary|Spell-Like|Supernatural
Dispel |No |Yes |No
Spell resistance |No |Yes |No
Antimagic field| No |Yes |Yes
Attack of opportunity |No |Yes |No[/table]

Dispel: Can dispel magic and similar spells dispel the effects of abilities of that type?

Spell Resistance: Does spell resistance protect a creature from these abilities?

Antimagic Field: Does an antimagic field or similar magic suppress the ability?

Attack of Opportunity: Does using the ability provoke attacks of opportunity the way that casting a spell does?

edit: @ Cat Goddess: There are various PRC features (dweomerkeeper comes to mind) that let you cast stuff as a Su ability, instead of as a spell. It can be rather broken, since doing such may bypass things like experience costs, etc. A more common and slightly less broken use for such abilities is to bypass SR.

sweet!

fyi: i'm playing a Noctumancer in a PbP campaign.

looks like loading up on Apprentice Path mysteries might work out ok'ish late-game.

If "xXx" is "damage", then it will help. Otherwise, no.
