View Full Version : Looking for a Word ...

Hey everyone, I'm trying to come up with a word for a Base Class I'm working on. It needs to be a word to define someone who uses projectile-based weapons to shoot people. However, the word itself needs to be vague so that it applies to a wide variety of ranged weapons, from guns to cannons to thrown weapons to bows.

Anyone have any ideas?

Marksman? Shooty McShooter?

Projectilist?

Yeah, completely weak but that's the best I can come up with off the top of my head. I'll think on it a bit more...

Ranged Specialist... Ranged weapon-user. Ranged-user... Ranger!
Just kidding. Ranger's not a real class.

More seriously-

Hawkeye? (Though that would involve quite a few M*A*S*H jokes.)
Sharpshooter.
Sniper.
Distance specialist.
Projectilemancer. (Which actually sounds kinda cool...)

Ballistic?

Marksman is appropriately broad I think. However, it's difficult to apply that to artillery and even machine guns.

'Shooter' is the broadest I can get, even if that doesn't seem to apply to ranged weapons.

Deadeye seems to fit nicely too me (like green suggested). It encompasses thrown weapons, bows, guns, and even artillery (though to be a deadeye with artillery you have to be really good).

But in D&D the suffix means much more than diviner. When you here someone talk about a pyromancer, the most likely situation is not someone who sees the future using flames. While the more proper use is for those that see, it is also defined as those that do. This is mostly tied to the sectioining of casters, and in that regard the use of ballistomancer is certainly not incorrect.

How about Ballistijuration!? :smalltongue:

Projectionist, if you have a magical equivalent.

Sniper or Skirmisher, depending on if it's at close range or far.

The best suggestions so far IMO are Deadeye and Marksman.

Before it picked up a connotation in modern militaries, did Sniper just mean someone who attacks from afar?

No, it always pertained to riflemen, particularly British ones in India. Hmph. Quite.

As Hallavast suggested earlier, Slinger is a good one.

Immediately calls to mind the idea of a gun slinger, but the term is broad enough to encapsulate a vast array of projectile proficiencies.

Nah, Slinger is too much like Archer. An archer uses a bow, a slinger a sling. Sure, its better than Atlatlist, but still too narrow. I like Marksman or Sniper personally.
