Hello All,

In preparation for a heavily dragon-themed campaign, a friend of mine has asked what race he could stick the Half-Dragon template to in order to create a winged rogue (Basically, we're building an Enor-type character). The problem is, most large races have LA, and we're looking for a Large Race with no or minimal LA.

ALSO: will Powerful Build qualify a half-dragon for wing growth as large size would? My apologies for any incorrect assumptions here: I am not really familiar with half-dragons at all.

Thanks for your help & happy gaming!

First- are you sure you want to use half-dragon? Dragonborn can get you flight or a dragon weapon ( or possibly both, with feats).
second- Half-minotaur template, from dragon magazine, makes you large size, as well as adding a few other abilities for 1 LA.
Half-ogres (RoD) are large, and get +6 Str, +2 Con, -2 Dex, Int, and Cha, as well as darkvision, and +4 Nat. armor for +2 LA.

Half-Ogre is probably the best idea, since other stronger Large races have high ECLs.

Goliath's Powerful Build is misunderstood by many to be "You're Large, except you're medium." It is not. It specifically allows you to wield weapons that are one size larger AND gives you the combat bonuses for special attacks that you get for being large. Specifically, Bull Rush, Trip, etc. Finally, you count as a Large creature for determining how special attacks affect you (ie, swallow whole). That's all it does.

As such, you do not get the half-dragon wings.

Dragonborn (Races of the Dragon) Half-minotaur(Dragon, archived here and there) Mongrelfolk(Races of destiny):

Pure win.
It'll never get past your GM though...

Incarnate Construct Maug is nice :) (Fiend Folio for Maug, MM3 for IC)

Other than that, Dragonborn Half-Ogre (Dragon mag template one) Half-Minotaur Lesser Ooze Paragenasi :)

There is the Dragon Wings feat in Races of the Dragon. You have to take it at first level, but it'll get a half-dragon character wings regardless of their size category. Of course, you'll need the next feat in that chain to actually be able to fly (Dragon Wings only lets you glide and jump higher/further) and there are still some restrictions on the flight til you get 12 Hit Die.
