Random Banter

Rules

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

Keychain of Creation is good too (but generally needs at least a passing interest in Exalted)

Quit reminding me of that which I cannot have.

Also, I guess boogieing is in order for the new thread, but some took that tradition from me a while ago so I guess it's up to them.

I hate it when deleted scenes are put into the previouslies. :smallannoyed:

I've had the same fountain pen for almost five years now. I hold it in a really rather weird way and due to the amount of use it's seen and the position in which I hold it, the nib has actually worn down to something resembling a calligraphy pen.

The punchline is that it was in a pack of 3 for £1.99 pens and it's outlasted numerous friends' fancy pens. I did unscrew the nib and put it in the case of another of the pens from that pack almost three years ago though because my old one was pretty much broken and the lid no longer even tried to stay on. It also makes a lot of noise which annoys other people.

No offense to K-B's taste here, but I would avoid Least I Could Do personally. The art's good, and the comic is fine if you enjoy Gary Stu, author insert, jackass protagonists.

Man, you have no idea. I met Ryan Sohmer last year, and he really is Rayne. The only differences I spotted were: Sohmer resembles Rayne's brother in the comic more, and Sohmer is also Jewish.

Also, @ Cycorsis - Darn tootin'! I even got real off-brand name-brand lemon-scented cleaner. I pull out ALL THE STOPS.

New thread... is that lemon cleaner I smell? *sniff sniff*

Oh, wait, that's just the lemons that life handed me. I'm still sick. Blargh. :smallannoyed:

When life hands you lemons you should think, think until you can figure out how you got an abstract construct like life to give real physical lemons. then repeat the experience and start a fruit stand specializing in lemons, sell them for cheap and defeat the big fruit corporations, using your vast fortune to conquer the world!!! MWAHAAHAHA!!! Ahem, Sorry ignore that.

Last April... We call it "Valborg" over here. Or, "The-day-in-which-people-drink-their-heads-of-themselves-and-then-drink-some-more" if you like. They started yesterday. *sigh*:smallannoyed:

Anyway, for today, students from the university in town made a lot of funny styrofoam boats whom they sailed upon down the stream going through the town centre and crash down the rapids (litterary). Pretty funny to see them fall off their disintegrating boats, actually.

Now in the evening, people have built and lit enormous bonfires in different places across town. Perhaps I should take my bike and go down to the nearest one after I've eaten my ice-cream.

Anyone have webcomic suggestions? Or something to watch on hulu? I think I've run out of entertainment.

OH MAN DID SOMEONE SAY WEBCOMIC SUGGESTIONS. YES SOMEONE DEFINITELY DID.

Problem Sleuth (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=4) Animation and ridiculosity in the form of a reader driven point-and-click/text-based game parody
Homestuck (http://goo.gl/DEzA) Unrelated sequel to problem sleuth. Considerably epic.
Guilded Age (http://goo.gl/GzT0) Comic fantasy thingy. Pretty good
Dinosaur Comics (http://goo.gl/P8Nv) Amusing 6 panels
The Abominable Charles Christopher (http://goo.gl/m6Uy) Beautiful. Read this.
Bad Machinery/ScaryGoRound (http://goo.gl/oMzR) Wonderful British supernatural shenanigans
Gunnerkrigg Court (http://goo.gl/jmkn) More of the same but more drama less comedy (still lots of both) DOUBLE READ THIS. It is gorgeous.
Nedroid (http://goo.gl/Nt1G) 'Zany' joke a day strips
Sam and Fuzzy (http://goo.gl/NVkX) Ongoing epic comedy drama about a man and his bear (also ninjas)
Gastrophobia (http://goo.gl/y2rw) The twelves tasks of Heracles, but different.
Lackadaisy Cats (http://goo.gl/7Yy5) Prohibition cats
The Non-Adventures of Wonderella (http://goo.gl/ae80) The worst superhero of all time
Hanna is not a boy's name (http://goo.gl/3qa3) Further super-natural shenanigans. Clever and pretty layout and flow
Pear-Pear (http://goo.gl/wLqh) A pear and mug's flourishing romance. Wordless
Sin Titulo (http://goo.gl/dVUb) Um. I'm not really sure. One man's descent into madness and despair. Not child friendly (blood and 'adult themes')

That may be enough.

Wow, a new thread. How long does each one normally last? It seems we got to 50 pages pretty quickly.

I've had one of those really exhausting weeks; I'm very glad to be doing absolutely nothing at all this evening, and I'm normally the type who gets bored after a while, if that's a reasonable measure of fatigue. :smalltongue:

I actually need to reread Wuthering Heights for my exams. It's been nearly five years since I last read it all the way through.
If you like the ambiguity of Bronte's I aslo highly recommend VIllette, it's a very claustrophobic book which balances nicely between 'normality', insanity and the supernatural wonderfully.

In that case I order you to read The Duchess of Malfi. Bosolo is an amazing malcontent and my favourite one, and don't forget, I've not read Othello yet, so I have no real opinion on Iago.
Bosolo's so misogynistic it's funny, he has some of the best lines, including one that can be paraphrase thusly: "Thy face, when removed of its makeup resembles nothing more than the feotus of an aborted hedgehog."
ANd yes, you can find the entire Malfi text online.
Two recommendations from someone I know has similar tastes to myself... perfect!

Have you read Riddle 23 of The Exeter Book?

“I am a wonderful help to women
The hope of something good to come
I harm only my slayer
I grow very tall, erect in a bed
I am shaggy down below
The lovely girl grabs my body, rubs my red skin
Holds me hard, claims my head.
That girl will feel our meeting!
I bring tears to her eyes!
What am I?”

An onion.
Nothing like a spot of double entendre is there?
That was great.
I love what a good sense of humour these people obviously had as well - something else you wouldn't normally think of immediately with Anglo-Saxons. It's a shame since the riddles are very witty to say the least. :smallamused:

No offense to K-B's taste here, but I would avoid Least I Could Do personally. The art's good, and the comic is fine if you enjoy Gary Stu, author insert, jackass protagonists.
Hey, Rayne has some tender moments.
Like when he drank a bunch of Red Bull and nearly died, causing him to have a hallucination.
Or when he revealed that his pranks on John were largely because they didn't spend any time together.
Or when he found out Kate was living with Noel.
He's just a very... odd... character.

FURTHER IN ADDITION TO PREVIOUS SUGGESTIONS:

Erfworld (http://www.erfworld.com/book-1-archive/?px=%2F001.jpg)
anti-HEROES (never updates) (http://www.antiheroescomic.com/comic/first)
Misfile (http://www.misfile.com/?page=1)

Path of the Necromancer (http://www.sticknia.com/comic/?p=26)
Bibliography (http://gaijinmanga.com/bibliography/archive.php)

Additionally, a video series that could eat up some time if you don't mind the more creepy/horror (although, of course, YourMileageMayVary*), is MarbleHornets (Introduction for Plot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wmhfn3mgWUI) | First Entry to Skip That Crap (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bn59FJ4HrmU)) which is perhaps THE definitive Slender Man series. And if you enjoy it, there's plenty of parodies, homages, and stuff to watch and eat up more time. Looking at a couple of hours for the entire thing, most likely.

*And to eat up more time, TV Tropes.

Keychain of Creation is good too (but generally needs at least a passing interest in Exalted)

Or at least an appreciation for jokes involving games.

I know I'm not often in the random banter but...

How the hell do you eat a Klondike Bar without it becoming a mess? Every time it becomes more difficult to eat it from one end without it collapsing, and eating around the edges just makes it explode later on.

And then you get to the end and half of the coating has splintered to pieces.

BNL HAS A NEW ALBUM!?!? WHO FAILED TO TELL ME?!! :smallfurious:

<-- goes and attempts to acquire

It's called "All In Good Time". I can't decide how I feel about it yet. I love about a third of the songs (notes new lyrics in the sig, thanks to "summertime"), but I'm just not a fan of Kevin Hearn's voice, and his songs feel predictable to me. I love Ed Robertson, though. LOVE. All and all, it's a much more serious album than any of their earlier disography, but that's been the trend in the last ten years ("Barenaked Ladies are Me" and "Barenaked Ladies are Men" in particular had some serious pieces, but still a lot of humor). And they've still got their trademark fun pieces, and sarcasm, and bizarre theoretical situations.

Basically, I feel like they haven't quite found their stride yet, without Steven Page, but I like the feel of their music.

I have Gordon, Maybe You Should Drive, Rock Spectacle, part of Stunt (I don't know what happened to the rest, but I can't find the disc), Maroon, Greatest Hits '91-'01, Everything to Everyone, BLAMen, Snacktime (their kids' album), and All In Good Time. I really need to purchase the rest of their discography.

I have two suits. One cost £150 from a shop that specialised in them which my mum bought because she insisted I had to have a good one, was bought with the end of 6th Form ball in immediate mind. In less than 3 years the stitching on the jacket has completely fallen apart twice.

The other cost £1 from the Salvation army, which I bought because I had a job interview at Greggs and needed a smart jacket. It might as well be made of adamantium, it was 30 years old when I bought it and I think it may well outlast the Earth, still in perfect condition.

I received a prophecy from someone some time ago. Every date, every time, every name on it has been accurate so far, and their is only one remaining part. If you can accurately describe the final event, I will accept you as a seer.

How will I die, and how long from now?

I give your prophecies Golentan's Official Seal of Failure.

While it is a valiant effort, based upon your available knowledge, your date and mechanism are both INCORRECT!!! Thank you for playing, you may pick up your consolation prize (a commemorative picture of a turkey) on your way out. Popcorn is available in the lobby.

For the record, vagueness, handwaving, distant future predictions, and parlor tricks only get you so far. And I'm not going out in my sleep, unless you count "Unconsciousness from critical systems failure induced by numerous high energy events" as "sleep." And I have a while yet before I'm allowed to stop kicking and meet back up with my companions.

...

I've never seriously claimed invulnerability, either, Raiki. Though I joke/lie a lot about myself a lot, so I may have made offhand comments, and for a certain degree of invulnerable it's true (no way anything of human manufacture'll hurt me anytime soon). As for immortality: Theoretically, yes. Life expectancy > life expectancy of all the protons in the observable universe for a fresh-off-the-line Krynchatal Tsuzagekiruan class frame. Assuming no damage. I've got about 136 years left on my ticker at current rates, barring repairs. Oh wait, everyone who could repair me is also dead. Welp. Only one thing to do. Bartender, I'll take... (counts playgrounders) 43,012 shots of your finest whiskey. And they'll all have the same (to anyone underage: Wait until you're twenty one, it will be better then anyway). Put it on my tab!

Unwrap enough of it to access one side. Eat that side. Peel back the wrapper further. Eat the rest.

Also, get the Reese's ones. They're awesome.

"Obviously" and "Actually" are two different things. For most of human history, in the minds of the population the world was "obviously" flat. The sun "obviously" revolved around it. Slavery was "obviously" a perfectly moral practice. Women were "obviously" weaker and less suited to rule then men.

And I know because someone else told me. Someone who's gotten what came before spot on, and someone who would know. I waste my time with things like this because almost in spite of myself I like people, and I don't like charlatans, and I have a hundred and thirty two years to kill somehow. Needling people foolish enough to do cold readings over the internet and apparently expecting to be taken seriously sounds fun.

Hey, I'm not going to scoff at someone if they can actually issue accurate predictions. I've had accurate, specific predictions done. And I'll demean myself in any way I choose, thank you very much. On which note, does anyone have any crisco?

Yeah... Not the normal sort of humor that goes over well, bothi. Partly because you (a pixie) insisted on it in all seriousness without a wink-wink nudge-nudge while misspelling. I prefer to take a more bard-like approach to revenge. Use my Forgery ranks to make some people who were previously harassed (by awkward questions) by the target believe the target is after 'em again, then let thing happen.

I feel like I've set up a folding chair and a cooler of beer and sat down next to a car accident. Also, the driver is drunk, drove into a pole, and is now trying to take a swing at a police officer, and I just know the guys gonna get tased and it's gonna be hilarious.

Also just spent time watching other people do work. . .well, not people, but a tiny, curly-legged spider which moved in along with the pots of chives. It is far from being the only critter to catch a lift, which is why I was so pleased to see it capture one of the carrot flies and package it up in silk. The spider itself is about as large as a carrot fly in the body, and these miniatures were backlit by a sun so strong they seemed translucent. I do love watching predation in action. There's a sense of communal action, like singers performing the same music, which the solitary munching of a herbivore misses. Now if I can just add another melody and capture a wild ladybug to feast on the aphids, which are on their second indoor generation. . .

Our house is almost literary flooded with silverfish, which is kind of gross, but we do have some allies living together with us too: wolf spiders. They are really cool, but I haven't seen anyone catch a silverfish yet (they remain hidden during daytime, so I won't see them especially often). My dad even has a workmate who supplies him with new spiders whenever he finds one in his own house.

I just found out what I look like with my goatee twisted into two little bits, a la Marco from Nightwish. Not bad, is the verdict. Which is good, because generally it looks too...whispy. Because it naturally parts and doesn't grow as long in the middle (slight chin-dimple. Thumbrint style, not pin-hole style.) so it doesn't look as thick as it is. May buy some wax or something and do this permanently...

If you're anything like me, you live like a harem woman and wake up just in time for lunch. And when you do, the best possible meal is Lego (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qsWFFuYZYI&feature=player_embedded).

Quincunx: Watching a spider feed is music. This is not to be doubted. If you have success against your aphids, do you suppose you could extrapolate a remedy for the mealybugs that are sucking the life juice out of one of my grapefruit trees?

Teddy: Even catching silverfish and tossing them in a large spider's web, the spider won't eat them. I don't think they're tasty. Centipedes, however, are their natural predator, did you know? - and both are otherwise harmless in the house ecosystem.

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, they prescribed Vicodin. I only had the first pill though. After realizing that Mario hadn't moved for the past 20 minutes, I couldn't stand the thought of taking another. One week after my wisdom teeth were removed, 2 teeth on the top near the front of my mouth had their roots put in (for attaching the fake teeth). They gave me morphine after my appendix surgery when I was 12 and I . . . reacted badly. I don't remember any of it. In fact, I barely remember anything of that week. I think maybe that's why the wisdom tooth surgery looms so much worse. I refused all food for two days, was on the couch for seven days, and sick for three weeks. My face took two months to return to its normal appearance.

I think anesthesia and I are, in general, not friends.

When I had my wisdom teeth out, there was no way I could game without my Vicodin. Or was I prescribed oxycodone? Whatever. It hurt like hell and gaming was the last thing on my mind.

Ironically, when I tore my foot open by accident last August, I was mostly upset that I tore a hole in one of my good pairs of socks. Yeah, it hurt to have a two-inch-long gash (maybe 5 mm deep? Dunno...) in my foot, but the sock and shoe couldn't heal on their own.

It's the exact same in England. Why have a codified, coherent system of measurement when we can have a strange, hodgepodge, amalgamation of different systems.

Pssshhh. A suicidal teenager's ghost is fairly easy to keep out of the house.

Unless he wasn't really suicidal, but got killed, and you're his large-breasted, red-headed, slightly crazy little sister. But then you shouldn't worry, since the tall, athletic guy that you've had a mutual crush on for a while will come and exorcise your big brother when he's gone insane and tries to kill you from beyond the grave.

So, in Senior Year, I took 6 AP classes (and one College Level class, (I was the only one to get an "A" in it out of my classmates) (so I had to take an early morning and an after school class also), in High School. My cousin and friends took IB classes. They were complaining about how hard their homework was, so I took a look at their homework.

I found out that IB and AP classes are pretty much exactly the same, except IB has more essays (Except English; the Senior English Lit/Lang teacher gave out more essays in her AP classes), and that their homework is really really easy. Or it could have just been IB was new, so the easy teachers taught it, while all the hardest teachers in the school taught AP.

Maybe it was just me.

When IB was first introduced at my school, I looked at the coursework, and the specific classes looked boring. Like, given the courses they require you to take, it moves you towards either being a scientist or a teacher. Forutnately, though, IB classes have less students than AP or Honors or regular classes (at least in my school), so they have more time with the teacher so it helps you learn more.

However, since I didn't want to be a teacher or a scientist (I'm working on both a Masters as a Mechanical Engineer, and getting a Doctorate in Medicine), I figured that IB classes weren't for me.

(Granted, last semester, I took classes with people two years ahead of me, but that's beside the point.) The only downside to taking a lot of AP classes is that you have to practice for Chamber Orchestra at 4:30 AM before leaving for early morning class, and for regular Orchestra at 11:30 before going to bed.

There is an IB-course on a gymnasium level here in town, and, well, I can't really determine why anyone would want to go there in the first case (and then half of the girls in my 9th grade class went to IB... :smallsigh:). First of all, it's not especially compatible with the Swedish educational system, which inevitably causes some problems when you proceede to the university, and all the education except the Swedish classes is in English, which in itself isn't bad, but at the time they graduate, their Swedish have actually gotten worse. No, I'll stick to my NV ("Naturvetenskap", or "Natural Science" in English) with extra English and the best English teacher in town.

Teddy: Since your post seemed to indicate you want to perfect your English, "which inevitable causes some problems" ought to be "which inevitably causes some problems". You are modifying the verb "causes", which requires an adverb and the adverb ending -ly, not the adjective form.

On leather: I have the sleeveless torso of a tan, lambswool-lined leather jacket. Not enough left to refashion into a jacket per se, but maybe a Conan-esque fur vest is doable. This time, when I sew it, I will use a zigzag stitch and maybe seam tape to stabilize the old and weakening leather--the slippers (made from the sleeves of said jacket) are already falling to pieces along the seams and they're not so old even if the leather itself might be.

That and I have no interest in sewing the necessary new sheets and duvet cover, even if the guest bed needs them in two weeks or less, before the guest arrives. Straight lines are so boring. :smallyuk:

Someone should add to that article that the world's largest wooden spoon is 4.64m (15.22 ft) long, 1.07m (3.5 ft) wide and weighs 350kg (771.6lbs).

Simple English Wikipedia is even more amazing. Some quotes:

The most important and biggest Crusades happened from the 11th century to the 13th century. There were 9 big Crusades in this time. They are numbered 1 through 9.

The Pope wears a big hat called a mitre

At the end of World War II, Hitler wanted everyone to die, including himself.

So simple, and so hilarious.

Edit: Kind of ninja'd... At least I have more quotes.

Maybe I'm broken. :smallfrown:

Here they really are mostly the same. There are AP and IB people taught in the same classes (Except English and Philosophy). So it's just the tests and projects that are different. And which of those is harder varies by subject.

Maybe you are. I don't think it could be not on purpose, anymore.

Thanks for reminding me of this. It gives me all the excuse I need to buy those lightsaber chopsticks I saw yesterday

I have some. Cycoris gave them to me. Everyone I know thinks they're hilarious.

Problem is, I live off cereal and soup, neither of which are conducive to eating with chopsticks . . . I never use forks anyway (chopsticks instead) but I haven't *needed* fork in so long I can hardly remember.

And now so do I.

They're actually not as complicated as I remember them being last time I tried to use them (which involved me flinging rice at a very old woman )

Yeah, they're not that hard to use. I learned by eating trail mix with them: mini M&Ms are hard to pick up when you're first learning.

Does anyone need advice on how to make social situations awkward and alienate oneself from people that don't know that well?

I mention it only because I feel like an expert right now.

Sad.

I love bagpipes. They sound so cool. (As long as the person playing them knows how to play it correctly)

You think bagpipes are bad? One of the greatest things about moving out of the city centre is that there are no more weddings next door with accordions playing. What I wouldn't have given for those guys to play bagpipes instead of accordions.

Apparently I was supposed to get a package from my family yesterday (which I never have, so I was really excited) but it didn't come. Sadness.

It has a topic, it's you being all psychicy. Speaking of which:

What is my name?

What is my quest?

What is my favorite color?

What is the average flight-speed of an unladen swallow?

Thank all u random people who posted on this, ranking me up to halfling from pixies

Shhh... you're not supposed to talk about that. (and it's based on your posts, not others)

Is it possible to label someone "Permanent Pixie?"

Bothi: You seem to misapprehend the purpose and mechanisms of the board. I won't actually say "Lurk Moar," but maybe actually integrating more with the community here would be good.

The post sucks. You'll get it soon.

I bought thirteen packages of ramen noodles for $1.95 earlier, at wal-mart. The college kid in me is ecstatic.
