View Full Version : What's a near demi-god to do?

Okay, this is going to require a bit of explanation.

Last session, the PCs went after an artifact that is in the possession of a near demi-God. It's an ex-PC Dwarven Cleric who is protecting an artifact that no true god must ever find. That's what the PCs have been hired to recover (they don't know that's what it really is though).

This Dwarf never ages, and can prepare spells without external divine power. Additionally, his six closest followers (Fighter 8/Dwarven Defender 7) can, when within 30 feet of him, cast spells as if he was casting them. If they do so, he gets only a move action his next turn, as he concentrates on granting those spells. That means all 6 of them can cast from his spell list, but they'll use up his spells slots very quickly that way. It also means the PCs are convinced he's got six level 20 clerics with him.

He resides on a demiplane of earth, just big enough for him and his clan of 36 dwarves (and their construct workers and golem defenders).

The PCs kicked in the door, so to speak... they opened a portal to this demiplane, and went in, bringing 12 Stone giant allies and one rogue cohort with them. Long story short(er), they killed everyone except the six "clerics" and the near demigod, and lost 9 of their 12 giants (the other 3 ended up banished back to the PC's home plane). They also destroyed the golems and all the worker constructs. They then plane shifted home, as the battle turned against them.

They're planning to go back, as soon as they can prepare. But the demigod wants revenge for the death of most of his clan. However, he doesn't know where they came from. And he can't use any divination spell that contacts a being from another plane for fear of bringing attention to himself, and to the artifact he protects. So what does he do now? He doesn't have the resources to bring back his whole clan from the dead, but could probably bring back a few.

can't he just cast wish or miracle or something and burn the xp from that encounter?

He could cast Miracle, but what should he use it for? He probably has enough to cast it once, but not likely twice.

He is a deity capable of granting spells, so logically you should be able to use Miracle for whatever you want. It becomes a one-shot, large scale reality alteration.

By the book? If he has divine rank and SDAs, that will definitely help him out.

If yes but it's homebrew, is there any other ability of his you haven't told us? If he's just an ageless Cleric 20 who can grant spell slots then he's a bit of a weak demigod; maybe give him a power or two related to his plane/the earth.

If he has no stats, then you can do whatever you want, pretty much.

General solutions... depending on what this artifact does, perhaps there's a way for him to discreetly use it. Also, when you use COP, you could contact, say, a Solar instead of an actual god. He probably doesn't have many allies (wanting to be discreet and all), but he might get a little desperate and make deals with non-deity allies. Heck, he could plane shift to the prime material and pay for some top-notch bounty hunters, so long as they get a good description of their marks.

Well, he doesn't cast spells in the traditional sense. He's a level 20 cleric, and can allow others to cast his spells... but it uses up his prepared spells when they do so. He's not a full fledged diety, but is on the cusp of becoming one (if the PCs don't kill him first).

A bit homebrew. He's a 20th level cleric, with SR 32, aging bonuses (but not penalties), and maximized hit dice. Plus the ability I mentioned earlier. Also, he's very well equipped.

Yes, perhaps I'll have him contact a solar or something.

Miracle and wish can pull anyone from anywhere and transfer them to anywhere else. He can prep his demiplane to trap the hell out of it, then pull them there (Will negates).

Or, he can put them somewhere really nasty, such as Demogorgon's throne room, in the lair of Asmodeus, or deep within the Far Realm. Be creative.

He could bring back as many as he can and send a few to recruit some new members. Send some more to hire assassins on the PCs. And by assassins, I mean like, Solar's or something really powerful.
