So do they actually make cool but non-functional pocket watches? Think something like Nagis clock from Mai Hime but in pocket watch form.

Out of curiosity, why would you want a non-functional pocket watch?

I don't, I want a picture but my google-fu is weak and I failed when I tried. :smallfrown:

A non-functioning pocketwatch would look the same as a regular, working pocketwatch, though. It just wouldn't be able to tell time more than twice per day.

That's not what I mean I mean a pocket watch that works, but has no numbers and could probably not be used to tell time, it just looks cool/ unusual.

Thats not a watch that works. Thats a novelty item. A watch is meant to tell time, if it dosn't do that, its neither a watch or a workable watch.

Well, this (http://www.yankodesign.com/2008/05/29/dandi-gentlemen-need-tech-too/) looked pretty cool. I don't think it's what you're going for, though.

Just going for aesthetically-pleasing, watch-shaped objects, right?

Well I watch is easier to type then novelty item, and narrows down the list of objects that I could be describing.

This is the closest thing I could find to what I wanted, but that sort of complicated mess.

That has hour and minute hands, and marked hours. I'm kind of suspecting it works.

That's got the numerals on it as well, although they're slightly erroneous.
They've marked the 4's with IIII instead of IV. That would annoy me if I bought a watch, especially one as intricate-looking as that one.

I think I read somewhere that the use of IIII and IV depends on the time in history the numbering is taken from.

Yes it just might be functional but I am starting to think that their isn't something of the like that I want around.

Not a pocket watch, but if you want interesting and all but impossible to use then might I suggest the binary watch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_Watch):
http://www.urbanjunkie.co.uk/shopimages/products/normal/binary%20watch%20square%20red%20led%20250.jpg

Basically it tells you the time by lighting the dots, which you have to read in binary code to understand. If you can do that then it's great. If not, a least it's a (probably drunken) conversation point.

Some the contractions of Roman numerals are from the nineteenth century, I believe. So whereas 1999 in Roman numerals would now be written MCMXCIX, Romans did not use the contraction IX, and would have written it MCMXCVIII.

I've seen churches around here with IIII on them as well.

not positive, but I THINK that watch is showing 5:15

EDIT: now that I look at it closer, it does. There are numbers above and below the dots, and if you simply add together the numbers who's dots are lit, you get the time. Though thats cheating.

Oh is that how it works. I genuinely couldn't remember and was too lazy to seek it out.

Still much more hassle than telling the time needs to be :smalltongue:

Soooo... a watch with a blank face? What about hands? Or how about a compass...

Other stuff:

http://www.watchandmarvel.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/breguet-grand-complication-ref.-1160-pocket-watch.jpg

Or you could just get the sort of watch you want and photoshop out all the useful bits.
