View Full Version : If you could be any non-human D&D monster, what would you be? (3.5/PF)

What constitutes a "monster"? Any creature or only non-player creatures?

Corpsecrafted Spellstitched Necropolitan. I used to be human, but now I live forever, have strength and nimbleness that I never possessed while still a living breathing meatbag, and, oh, best of all, shoot frickin' laser beams out of my eyes. (SLAs have no components, so I figure this is absolutely within the realms of RAI.)

... what?

For power?

The Evolved Undead Ghost of a Great Wyrm Gold Dragon (would go with Prismatic, but I'd prefer to be able to blend when I want to).

Immortality? Check. Difficult to temporarily kill? Check. Able to take down small nations? Check. Able to live as a human if desired? Check.

What's not to like?

Being an illithid has great drama potential.

All the other kids laugh at me and ridicule me for my horrific appearance but I keep being nice to them until by the end of the movie, I win their trust and they all learn a valuable lesson about not judging others on appearances.

...And then I eat all of their brains.

And you have a legion of fanatical robots to do your bidding, and Lord of Blades isn't a bad title either.

For all the benefits of being an Uber fiend (immortality/DR/spell resistance/respawning) without actually having to live in the lower planes.
Combine the powers of a doppleganger with a high level sorcerer and evil cleric which you don't have to actually work for and you got the Ak'chazar Rakshasa.

I guess, considering all creatures, Half-Silver Dragon Planetar would be pretty awesome. Half-Silver Dragon Ghaele Eladrin would be real nice too. Alternatively, obviously Half-Celestial Silver Dragon but yeah.

Either way, mixing the noblest of Dragons with the most graceful and beautiful Celestials results in a rather incredible being.

Well, that's if we're being reasonable. If I could be any D&D monster, definitely a templated monstrosity- Jack_Smith's got it pretty much down, but you could certainly throw on the paragon template there. Plus maybe another few dozen CR worth.:smallwink:

Incubus with the 3rd party 'redeemed' template, and levels in Effigy Master. I'm ageless, a embodiment of sexy, and can build robot maids and such, that don't lose levels when I kiss them.

Maybe throw in a level or two of merchant prince, it's hard to get jobs when you're a demon, and it's not ethical to take the wages of a free-willed minion, even if they are technically a robot.

Oh and take the Landlord feat, I don't care what anyone says, a feat that gives you half off building strongholds is the best deal a non-combat person is going to get.

Probably the most underused book in existence. One time I took the feat and built a dungeon without the Dm really 'knowing' about it. Then I spread a rumor about some "all powerful force of good that's going to purse the area of evil". Funny thing is, I never actually had to do anything, all the traps I had put in were killing off CR 12 evil monsters without me lifting a finger. My DM threw that character out of the game and declared my dungeon "worse than the tomb of horrors". (Hey at least the rock trap at the start of the dungeon doesn't RESET itself after it's set off right?)

Half-Celestial Succubus, that's a weird one. Although it kinda reminds me of the "Little Nicky" movie.

A 3.0 Nymph is the one death attack I would WANT thrown at me assuming I passed my save. Just once I would like to see how beautiful a thing has to be to kill. (I don't think it blinds you in that edition if you pass the save, just death if fail, and it's only DC 17, which is a joke for level 7 characters).

Phasm. Yeah I know it doesn't have all the big guns that rest of y'all's choices do, but the thing is, being an alhoon carries with it the burden of having to eat seintent creatures brains to survive. Not fun. Being an all powerful dragon, well, how many other dragons are there in RL? You're kinda out on your own. If you live with other dragons it might be a bit different, but still, there's all these responabilities and limitations. Being a dragon requires you to resume dragon form and go flying about at some point (read Silver Dragon discription, they have to do that occasionally even if living as humanoid 24/7) risking being outed and vilified.
No, a Phasm means ultimate freedom. I can change into any shape I want. I could even live as myself. I don't have some abilities that could double as curses (detect thoughts, eating brains, giant scaly body). I could live a normal life and still go turn into anything I want, whenever I want. Also, tremorsense and telepathy would be pretty useful abilities if I got into a sticky situation.
EDIT: Yeah I don't trust myself with world-shaking powers. Like if I'm a dragon, one day I loose my temper and eat some dude. Then I have to live with that for the rest of my life. If I'm a phasm and I make some mistake, it's no big deal.

Well, the half-X templates are just badly named, probably because "part-dragon" and "quasi-celestial" and "kinda outsider-ish" didn't have the same ring to them. :smallwink: You're not actually half of anything, otherwise a half-troll red dragon (for instance) would be the same mechanically as a half-red-dragon troll. It makes just as much sense for a half-dragon half-celestial half-fiend X to be 1/4 dragon, 1/4 celestial, 1/4 fiend, 1/4 X.

I'd go Psionic Couatl.

How, exactly, it's better than a Gold Dragon, I'm not sure. But it just feels more stylish to me. Maybe partially because other people have already said Gold Dragon. Or maybe because it's got much better spellcasting, assuming comparable CR or ECL.

It's still got most of the good stuff of the dragons built in: great Hit Dice, flight, innate sorcerer casting (with Cleric spells cherry-picked), shapeshifting. Plus, just for coolness, throw in the Psionic subtype, poison, constrict, detection of alignment/thoughts/magic, telepathy, plane shifting, and some random defensive powers.

Anyway, as to race? Beholder. Why? I already hate everything, the pewpew lazor eyes would just be a bonus.

Spoilered for length. I got wordy.
Well Elan (XPH) is really, really nice. No having to deal with any of the hassles of life like eating, drinking, sleeping or growing old? Sign me up. Unfortunately, they're still somewhat squishy and, more importantly, not dragons.

Unbodied (XPH) are also awesome but, again, suffer from a critical lack of dragon-ness. They also have the same freedom from human constraints as Elan - though I do believe it's a bit murky as to whether they would have to eat, breathe and sleep.

Phasm (MM) is a strong contender. Shapeshifting is an incredibly attractive idea to me and Phasms have that in spades. Be anything you want, whenever you want? I'll take two. But again, they get marked down for not being dragons.

Quesar (BoED). All the advantages of the Construct type, but with fast healing and positive energy powers. Still not dragon though.

I like the idea of being a Coure Eladrin (BoED), or any sort of Eladrin in fact. Outsiders have a lot of advantages, and Coures are cute as a button. A Firre (BoED) is a good alternative, what with their 'turn into a living pillar of fire' shtick. So is a Ghaele. In fact, I'd go for any sort of Eladrin quite happily, were it not for the next option...

Mercury Dragon (DoF). They instantly get ultra-double-plus-mega bonus points for possessing that all important trait of actually being dragons, and Mercury dragons are my favourite variety for a few reasons. They breathe plasma beams, they look awesome, they're chaotic good and they are the only variety of true dragon I know of that gets a Dex bonus. Me likely.

But let's pin this down a bit more. What age category would I want to be? Well, there's no real point to being a dragon if you're going to be a small dragon, so the minimum size I'd want would be medium. That means Young. Not bad, CR 5, ECL 12, has 1st level spells and a couple of spell-like abilities. But it can't shapeshift and I want more magic. Being bigger would be cool as well. So let's go for adult instead. Frightful Presence, Spell Resistance, shapeshifting and 4th level spells. Puberty is also over, and no one want to have to through that if they don't have to. I could go higher for more spellcasting, but would cut into the time I'd have to enjoy being a freaking dragon (not that I wouldn't plan on achieving immortality anyway).

Templates seem to be popular, so let's see if there are any I like the look of. First thing I want is to become immortal (not much, I know). I could become undead or something, a Good (Draco)Lich maybe, but I'd rather not have to deal with rot. Or maggots. Or Clerics. Plus dying sounds kind of painful. So let's not do that. Deathless would be nice, but there's no workable templates for them. Other good options for immortality are becoming a Construct, or becoming an Outsider. Constructs tend to be non-sapient, so Outsider seems like a good bet. Half-Celestial seems a good choice, particularly with all my HD. Let's bump up the Hit dice by one to get the final SLA from my template, since I'm so close.

So that'd make it a Half-Celestial Adult Mercury Dragon for ECL ~29/CR 13. Could probably throw in a few class levels while you're at it. Probably either Wizard/Ultimate Magus or Erudite/Cerebremancer. Because there's no such thing as too much magic. Mind you, I'd be happy with even a Wyrmling Mercury Dragon - even when they're babies, they still outdo the humans by a huge margin.

TL;DR Half-Celestial Adult Mercury Dragon. Or a Coure Eladrin. :smalltongue:

Elan, Rakshasa or Phasm. I can't decide which. Immortality, mind-reading and sorcery and being anything are all really cool. Probably Rakshasa though just because I could get magical abilities, mind-reading and shape-changing. Actually my choice is definitely Rakshasa, excellent abilities and they look awesome in their natural form.

Half-Efreeti Adult Mercury Dragon. Who cares if I have to change to Dragon form every once in awhile? Unlimited invisibility, Gaseous Form, multiple Plane Shift & eventually Wish. Throw in Half-Celestial for healing powers and eventually Ressurection.

The only downside with Half-Efreeti is vulnerability to Cold (especially combined with Mercury Dragon)... though replace Mercury Dragon with Silver Dragon and their vulnerabilities cancel out!

Being a dragon would be cool. I mean, flight? Check.
Always looking awesome, no matter what you do? Check.
Breath weapon? Check.
Excuse to laze about and generally not have to do much to make it through life? Check.

I don't friggin' care about SLA's and templates. I'm a friggin' dragon. I want something done, I get the PCs to do it.

I"m going to take it farther, to non-humanoid, or capable of shapeshifting into one. Ergo: a blink dog. Seriously, teleportation, telepathy (at least in AD&D), naturally lawful good, human-level intelligence: what's not to like?

Elans don't gain age categories, so they can't do that.

Their age categories are in XPH (not the SRD.) Elans are venerable at 1,000 years.

Very old Elans are referred to as "Cullers."

Some form of outsider; preferably that which has a relatively high CR.
Speaking of high CR, an ethergaunt would be fun...probably not so much for the vict...eh, opposing team; but hey, not everyone can be winners.

I'm kinda leaning towards a grey solar; a solar that grew tired of celestial politics and fiendish stupidity and decided to go neutral.

Actually, that was a misprint. The fluff and the SRD both say Elans have no maximum age, and they later added Errata for the XPH to clarify that the maximum age was, in fact, a misprint. Here's a link to the page with all the errata on. (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/errata)

Trying to find official stats for what happens to a Solar when it falls... depending on that, it's probably what I'd like to be.
I think a fallen Solar becomes an Erinye.

--

Anyways, unrestricted monster? Because my first choice would probably be a mythical Kitsune. Shapeshifting, illusions, spirit fire, and near-godhood for my 1000th birthday? That sounds like it would be a lot of fun. Mythical Coyote would also be a high choice, for similar reasons.

Back to D&D, I would tend towards my favorite monsters. Medusa (or Maedar), Rakshasa, and Couatl are all interesting. Steel Dragons and Firbolg were fun when I had a chance to play them. If I wanted to play something immortal, then an Inevitable would be very neat - assuming I don't get roped into eternal Lawful Stupid servitude.

I think a fallen Solar becomes an Erinye.

The beings who fell with Asmodeus became erinyes- in FC2.

However, it may depend how powerful the angel is and how far they fell. They might go straight to archdevil, like the fallen solar Malkizid, in the Forgotten Realms,

or they might just change alignment while retaining most of their powers, subtype, etc, like the planetar in Elder Evils, who serves the demon lord Sertrous.

Pelor? You want to be the Burning Hate? Why would anyone choose such a fate? Good luck finding allies.

The original erinyes were spirits of wrath in mythology; they're alternately fallen angels (not solars) in the official canon while remaining devils in others.

I've yet to get to around to revising the solar, but it's on my to-do list; I can post a fallen solar along with the template.

Quite a hard descision, that. You have your Lich, which is quite excellent, your Illthids, Ulithards, and Elder Brains, all of which would be equally fun to be. Beholder would certainly be enjoyable as well.

But...I would have to go with what they -say- an Aboleth is. An ancient, all-knowing, extremely powerful, Lovecraftian being. Not a 16 Intelligence, one Knowledge Skill, mid-level Encounter.
