View Full Version : Characters in the Making: An Image Study

Inspired by the Dungeons & Dames thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117210) and its two (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148957) children (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148945), I wanted to try something just a little different. Rather than looking for images that steam up the screen, I'm looking for ones that scream out 'character' or 'campaign' to you. Pictures with depth, pictures that tell a story, pictures that make you say "I want to play that!" or "That's exactly what I'm playing!"

Let's get started.

http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/7681/assassinbytritonickx3.jpg

I started doing play-by-post with a roguish character. Cunning, clever, competent, with a dash of sass to spice a sweet personality. A nimble TWF dagger fighter. I saw this picture, and everything clicked. That was her, right there.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c270/oninosensi/1204228594469.jpg

I gather this is something of a classic. The scene begs for elaboration. How did this woman come to be out here in the snow, firing off her last (holy?) arrow against a skeletal demon with an axe? Whose sword is that stuck in its armor? Can she bring that arrow to bear before the demon cleaves her in two?

http://th01.deviantart.net/fs43/300W/f/2009/082/9/0/Mary_of_the_Blue_Lights_by_TeaDrinker004.jpg

This picture makes me want to create the character, to make a story for her. In a faraway Asian city, a poor young girl struggles on the edge of existence, even as awakening supernatural powers attract companionable but mysterious spirits. Yes, that's basically what the artist wrote on the DeviantArt page (http://teadrinker004.deviantart.com/art/Mary-of-the-Blue-Lights-116905818) (though I didn't notice that before now). No, that doesn't make it less awesome or inspiring.

This character was posted in the original Dungeons and Dames thread. Her equipment, outfit, and the haunted look in her piercing blue eyes all add up to make her an intriguing character, one whose story begs to be told.

Yeah, I loved that picture too when I saw it. That girl looks like serious business. Someone is getting their sleep interrupted tonight, either by a bullet to the brain or gas in the face.

More!

"What, it's just a girl with a magic glove, a magic pendant, and a penchant for Fireba--wait, a wristwatch?" There's also the matter of the interesting scar. To be fair, this one is apparently a book cover (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shaktra), so that may be cheating somewhat (not that the covers of, say, the Inheritance cycle ever showed as much).

http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs5/i/2004/281/c/5/_bride_of_lucifer__by_noah_kh.jpg

Another one from the original thread, this picture immediately begs two questions:
1) How did a bard get to be this awesome?; and
2) When can I stat her up?!

http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/2523/1260413463241.jpg

Who are you? What are you? Where did you come from? Why do you have a holy symbol on your neck? Does it hurt?

Kinda strikes me as someone the Winchester brothers would run into in Supernatural, probably about to die because she is an attractive female. That or she was about to become Dean's next booty call.

I was totally going to post that if you didn't. Awesome, awesome picture.

For me, it's this one:
http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs7/i/2005/234/3/e/Pimp_those_lines_a_little_more_by_Inkthinker.jpg
It prompted me to homebrew a Prestige Class (http://wiki.faxcelestis.net/index.php?title=Dualist) for her and try repeatedly to play her (first game died before I could qualify for the class, second died after one fake combat, third is just getting started and I'm hoping for better results).

Mostly, she just looks so... tough, like she knows what she's doing and she's very, very good at it... but she's still cute.

Looking at that Bard (and the setting), I'm reminded of the Dirgesinger PrC in Libris Mortis... not to mention the squicky spell Bonefiddle, in the Spell Compendium.

Here’s three.

Actually used this one for a BoEF game. Class was sort of homebrewed monkish class. Now days she’d end up being a monk/unarmed swordsage gestalt. The tattoos are magical stat enhances. Besides the idea of an orc barmaid just amuses me.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g42/TheThan/orc_wench.jpg

I can’t think of a better reason to go on an adventure than to protect one’s family. So this picture is really inspiring for a character. In addition this piece invokes a lot of emotion anyway.

I Like the idea of a barbarian princess thrust out into the harsh wilderness on some epic quest, with her two bodyguards in tow.

I'd love them. Thanks!

In the meantime, another pic:

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/601/selenabyperzo7si.jpg

The thing that makes me put this up is the way nobody around the girl seems to notice her, for all she stands out. Perhaps she's some street brat who got trapped on an unfriendly part of the Ethereal Plane and now makes the journey voluntarily. Then there's all the red. Maybe she just likes the color of her hair, or maybe there's something more to it. And who is the viewer? What is she looking at? It intrigues me.

Here’s three. SNIP

Another fan of mr Andersson?

He is AWESOME. He's the reason I started learning to draw, at the old age of 19. Technically, I've seen better, but his pictures are full of stories... And quite a lot of nudity, unfortunately, as it means I can't post my favourites.
And he'd approve of this thread, too: Inspiration is everywhere (http://andersson.elfwood.com/Nenas-Demon-Goat.3554616.html)and as far as I'm concerned it's yours for the taking. An original idea generates a new one, and so on, usually stretching far from the inspirational source and across new boundaries. Inspiration is amazing that way, but sometimes the original idea is just plain good as it is.

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h251/Endoperez/Art%20from%20others/orc_vs_dwarf_vs_demon.jpg
Boy meets girl, picks up a fight, wake up an ancient monstrosity feeding off of their anger, they fight it together, and as they learn to respect each other they defeat the monster... Or something like that.

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h251/Endoperez/Art%20from%20others/black_shaman.jpg
"A shaman of the wild, (http://andersson.elfwood.com/Black-Shaman.2524308.html) tracking an intruder that has angered the spirits."

I can't link to the image most dear to me, so you get wordswordswords instead. The image is "The Scorpion Beauty", or "beautiful scorpion" as it's called in a different site named Naorhy. Andersson isn't afraid to draw nudity, and bare breasts feature in many of his works, so I won't provide any links and anyone searching for his gallery on Naorhy should remember that it's not SFW.

Before you stands a monstrous woman, a centaur-like creature whose lower body is not equine but that of a giant scorpion. Her powerful tail curves up and its stinger lies above her head, and she rests one of her huge claws against the floorstones. The other claw is upright and carefully holds a small mirror in the air. There's an ornate brush in her human arms which she's using to comb her long hair back, her eyes fixed to the mirror, and on her lips there's a shy smile. She's expecting company.

The description I read long ago mentioned something about adventurers moving towards a monster's lair, and how she, the monster, is getting ready to meet them... :smallwink:

http://www.rice-boy.com/store/doorways.gif
Bottle Woman, on the right, appears in works of Evan Dahm. Use refluffed warforged as a race and you'd be good to go...

It's great! With the (extremely minor) caveat that pictures should leave room for a story to be created, rather than telling an entire story in themselves. So the 'boy and girl bond by fighting a monster' one is just a little bit too rigidly structured, to my mind. But I'm not objecting, any road: that's a matter of 90% perfect vs. 95% perfect, not some kind of deal-breaker.

There's only two character's that I've tried to submit to multiple games here on the forums, and they were inspired by these two pictures

http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs49/f/2009/220/1/9/Tassia__by_HaveConquest.jpg

Not quite evil, but she sees the world differently from other humans. She's cursed, if she stays in one place two long she'll eventually stand out as someone that you do not want to have around. She's learned to cope though, whenever others are frightened she laughs it off. Let others be uneasy, she doesn't care anymore. Regardless, she'll figure out whatever it is that makes her different.

Both times I played her she had an aberrant mark in an Eberron game. She grew up in Droam and found it easier to deal with the monsters there then with the other human-like species. She was always some class that dealt with things taboo, Hexblade, Binder, Aberrant Heir. She was fun.

Him? He's someone who knows he's bound for greatness. Already born in high society, he knows the ins and outs of social situation, always acts properly and has a particular charm about him. In his mind though, he sees himself as superior, he knows that he'll come out on top. He's incredibly dedicated though, a diligent worker who studies everything he can get his hands on. You never know when something like that will be useful.

A cloistered cleric, both times. First devoted to Wee Jas and following the doctrine of a god of vanity very well. The second he was 'worshiped' the sovereign host, but considered it the 15, instead of the 9. He was a member of House Cannith who lost everything in the mourning and was well on his to getting it back, even if it meant starting from scratch. He always had a peculiar draw to Darkfire and Darkbolt (evil spells, but if he's trying to kill someone then it really doesn't matter does it?)

You. Do. Not. **** with this lady. A refined, deadly, subtle assassin, possibly a ninja but probably doesn't need it. Knows how to perform an elegant tea ceremony and poison your drink. Likely known only by reputation, she's the right-hand woman of some organization--and if you antagonize that organization, you will be looking over your shoulder the rest of your life. Of course, you still won't see her coming--she'll just blend in with the crowd and put a knife in your side. I'm cheating again--this is a movie poster, I think.

Well, sure. There's no law saying the threads have to be mutually exclusive, and a few of the pictures on here are cross-posted from the Dungeons & Dames threads. I wanted this thread to be different in two ways:
1) It should encourage the posting of scenes as well as portraits. For example:
http://coolvibe.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/dockinttwoers.jpg

Now, there are no characters in this scene anywhere. But I would love to make a futuristic campaign setting that did justice to the image...or at least began to.

2) It should discourage the posting of "breasts, attached to a woman"-type pictures. A success, so far. The D&D threads have a fairly large proportion of those--which is fine, that's what they're for, but it's not what I wanted.

Anyway, may I present the very definition of bad asses;

Just to explain, definitely not cleric in the usual heavy armor sense, but the cloistered cleric (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#clericVariantCloistere dCleric) variant, which does seem rather bard-like. It adds the knowledge domain, some bard-like spells to their list and gives them Lore, a bardic knowledge equivalent. He wasn't humble or devote though, he just saw the clergy as the career that was chosen for him when young and as one he excelled at. It came naturally, and when you find it easy to be granted favor by the gods, well, that does wonders for you're self worth I think.

I felt this worked great for Wee Jas. Magic is a tool, knowledge is priceless, tradition should be honored and one should be damn sure that he has something the others lack. That's pretty much everything this god wants in her clerics. As for his Eberron incarnation? Religion is much lighter in the setting, and there's no real proof that the gods even exist. Some even theorize that clerics can produce those miracles through sheer conviction. Whether its pointed at deities, a philosophy, or one's self doesn't seem to make a difference.

You know, I think I might try to revive this guy again, there's a lot I wanted to do with him that just didn't get to happen since pbps have such a high mortality rate. He's one of my favorites.

The slightly ambiguous elf warrior with leaves in his/her hair, the intricate armor, the magic sword, the ominous forest. It all begs to be elaborated on.

I'm a very visually inspired person, so I have a whole folder of these, but here are my current favorites.

http://www.wocstudios.com/images/firewater.jpgNo spikes. No freakishly awesome asymmetric (and utterly useless) armor. Just a good, old fashioned, archer.
I'm going to post this one as a link because it's huge. http://us.media.blizzard.com/starcraft2/images/artwork/ss96-hires.jpg

For some reason I look at this picture of Raynor and think "space engineer!" Maybe it's because I think engineers are the most interesting characters/units in Sci-fi games.

Here are a couple from the Reaper Minis line - I've often found inspirition both for D&D and other games (namely Mordheim or WFB/W40K characters) from miniatures.

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj46/Thomo_85/RP/03337_Terezinya.jpg

There is something about her that just screams necromancer/cleric (of undeath). Of course her backstory helps a lot with that. http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/female/latest/03337#detail/03337_Terezinya

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj46/Thomo_85/RP/03311_concept.jpg

And this one. I actually have this miniature at home and it is wonderfully sculpted. I have built characters from her before - a bard, rogue and ranger. She really has a style and flair of her own.

I saw this reaper mini and absolutely had to have him as a character. He became Taverand Kane, street urchin turned adventurer. A swashbuckling rogue, he worked his way into a Lordship, a handsome business venture, and an even more lovely aristocrat's daughter by the time the campaign ended.

What a useful bag of chalk.

Actually, this guy already has a story. And he's not just an archer, he is THE Archer.
You probably heard of his story before: A lone archer, in a burning city, at a lake, at the foot of a mountain, a dragon in the sky, and an empty quiver.
Rings a bell? :smallwink:

I can’t think of a better reason to go on an adventure than to protect one’s family. So this picture is really inspiring for a character. In addition this piece invokes a lot of emotion anyway.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g42/TheThan/hero_departure.jpg
His story is probably pretty straight forward. But what about the woman he leaves behind? What will happen to her if he doesn't come back? This might also be a very interesting story to tell.

I Like the idea of a barbarian princess thrust out into the harsh wilderness on some epic quest, with her two bodyguards in tow.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g42/TheThan/mountain_mistress.jpg
I wonder about the little guy? How does a gnome end up as a bodyguard for a barbarian princess? He certainly doesn't look like her pet slave and seems to have earned the right to serve her along the other warriors. Definately a very good story to tell.

I like this one for the simplicity of the design. Just pants, a t-shirt and perhaps some defensive spells. It allows the character to express something, ot the belts outfit.

Man is this the thread for me! I'll take just a handful from the gallery of images I've been collecting, at random. I collect any pictures that feel inspirational, or can be used as reference or motif for characters or place-settings IMC. [Warning: Some may be huge.]

Campaign Images
These are pictures that evoke the look, feel and type of events I would like to see in a campaign.

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/9409/batukhan1.jpg
This one is Prince Michael of the Medieval Russian states, about to suffer martyrdom for refusing to renounce Christianity to Batu Khan. I love Medieval Russian clothing and armor as an interesting blend of east and west, as well as the mood lighting in this piece. (The tunic/boot combo is pretty much what the average Imperial Citizen wears in my setting).

http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/8241/mansamusavt51.jpg
This is the 13th-Century Mansa (Emperor) of Mali, Musa I. African history and trappings are little-seen in any fantasy, so I made it a fairly major part of my setting and drew a lot of inspiration from the historical empires of the desert and grasslands of West Africa.

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/7883/bethlehempeasants1.jpg

Peasants of Bethlehem from the turn of the 20th century. Their garb has a timeless look to it, at once colorful and weatherbeaten, that I borrowed for common folk from certain regions of my setting. Actual ancient/medieval/early-modern clothes were often as colorful as possible even if the wearer wasn't wealthy, as opposed to the drab palette you see in Gladiator or whatever.

http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/4520/ageoftamerlane44bk1.jpg

I love asian armor. And I don't mean O-Yoroi. Central Asian, Rus, Muslim, Turk/Mongol and Indian armors have a unique look all-too rarely seen in fantasy. The often-strange profiles the helms and aventails create around the head, the ornate disc-plates, the tile-like patterns of lamella or rivet-lined splints create an image of something almost like moving wallpaper.

Characters

http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/7296/frzgardekuerassier1.png
Napoleonic Cuirasser. I love this guy's distant, confident expression, and the contrast of leather and steel set up against his spotless white and red articles. His clothing is recognizably modern, but evokes an almost knightly look. Oh yeah, and he's so ridiculously young looking. It puts me in mind of how you used to become a man a hell of a lot sooner back in the day.

I would so play the dude on the right, or in the middle. That beekeeper-like veil of mail, or that serious-looking pata (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pata_(sword)) are both awesome.

This guy makes me think of the eponymous hero from Sergei Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0029850/), the Prince of Pskov. Something about his mood and bearing.

Anyhow, Yo****aka Amano's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yo****aka_Amano) style has always evoked a sense of "I want to play That." in me. (And apparently his name evokes a sense of "Fire the Redactobeam!" from the forum's obscenity filter.)

This guy looks a helluva lot like Captain Mulucco Wrathe from the Vampirates series of books :D

She's an elf and she's a Druid; between those two she's immune to pretty much everything and friends with most insects and above warm and cold. And since she can spend half her time in animal forms (mayhap she enjoys bird shapes?) anyways, does it really matter what she wears (or doesn't) otherwise?

But really, I began to wonder about that staff; it appears to be alive on its own accord. Mayhap the eagle is just another animal working for her, and the staff is her true companion? That could be interesting; it certainly appears very vivid and though there's of course the easy answer of "her magic makes it that way", I find it far more interesting to explore the staff as a separate entity. Item Familiar could probably generate the feel of having a separate Staff, Companion (the eagle) and of course, the Druid herself.

Some BBEGs for you to take a look at...

Chaotic Evil BBEG...
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn174/darkstalker200/Death_Knight_of_Orcusi.jpg - Evil, necromancer cleric, period. He would make a great BBEG with that horde of undead behind him to act as his faceless mooks. It also looks like this guy somehow obtained a fiendish template of some kind, which makes him an even better BBEG....I can see it now, a wicked cleric of Orcus who's patron granted him the "gift" of becoming a fiend like his master...well..part fiend. He now uses his newly found fiendish might and necromantic powers to raise empires in the name of Orcus and adds their populations to his personal army of undead.

Lawful Evil BBEG(and a bonus hero)
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a193/ytilatrommi/Dragons/firedragon.jpg - A diabolic Dracolyte of Tiamate. One of the most wicked and mighty servants of his dark patron, he rules an evil empire that has conquered much of the world and runs it with a tightly clenched iron fist. A friend to evil dragons, his greatist desire is to form a global kingdom ruled by cromatic dragons Tiamat's clerics and followers...and he also seeks the destruction of all metalic dragons....However there is one thorn in his side...

http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd242/prophet3570/dragonknight.jpg - The defender of the last free kingdom on the planet, his archenemy, a Dracolyte of Bahamut. He embodies everything that the Dark Lord despises. Goodness, light and an affinity for metalic dragons. However, this hero can't face the tyrant alone...he needs a group of equally skilled combatants if he's going to take down the Dark Dracolyte.....looks like it's time for a high level level 3.5 campaign! Netural Evil BBEG
http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv44/Shresser/dark_lord.jpg - An evil arcanist who's a manipulative and shadowy puppeteer. He's the kind of guy who would be the "power behind the throne," who has no regards for anything but his own goal, to become the most powerful and only god in existence. He would be the kind to do anything to get what he wants and in a campaign would be manipulating events, people and the PCs as well as pulling out a crapload of Xantos Gambits and maybe even a Xantos Roulette to gain godhood. Expect him to abuse Mind Rape and Dominate Person and remember not to trust kings or leaders who start to act funny.

Hey look, it's this campaign's Quirky Miniboss Squad (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/QuirkyMinibossSquad), led by The Dragon (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheDragon). Inquisitors of an evil empire, leaders of some ancient secret order--no mere henchmen, that's for sure.

That's a no-nonsense adventurer right there. I imagine she was caught out by some big dumb brutes too gleeful over their size advantage to realize that this isn't a person to mess with. Or maybe she was investigating something and drew the fight to her, except she's got more of a wanderer's look.

This has always struck me as the most amazing setup for a more kid-friendly roleplaying game. There's just so much story begging to be told, and who can seriously say they wouldn't have loved to be in that same position as a child?

This guy makes me think of the eponymous hero from Sergei Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0029850/), the Prince of Pskov. Something about his mood and bearing.

Anyhow, Yo****aka Amano's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yo****aka_Amano) style has always evoked a sense of "I want to play That." in me. (And apparently his name evokes a sense of "Fire the Redactobeam!" from the forum's obscenity filter.)

For example:

http://olduvaireads.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/dream.jpg

http://pics.livejournal.com/crazydeus/pic/000kkxz6

http://www.altvampyres.net/vhd/3a.jpg

http://www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk/images/G/GN1129.jpg

His web gallery is to be found here (http://www.amanosworld.com/) (Some of his art may not be safe for work).

Oh boy. Vampire Hunter D. I've only seen the movies, but Bloodlust had some really, really evocative imagery that would work perfectly in a Ravenloft or Eberron campaign. The art was beautiful. Both genders had representatives who were either elegant and aristocratic or gruff and functional. No cutesy stuff whatsoever.

Another one from the original thread, this picture immediately begs two questions:
1) How did a bard get to be this awesome?; and
2) When can I stat her up?!

http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/2523/1260413463241.jpg

Who are you? What are you? Where did you come from? Why do you have a holy symbol on your neck? Does it hurt?

That bard is exactly what I imagined my Swashbucker/Sorceror Savior-of-devilkind Lady to be. Oh my god. I might just have her take up the violin so this picture can happen.

As for the second, this picture is a perfect visualization of a character I've been playing for a while, she's a half banshee (the other half is human) and that is very much what I thought her "normal" form would be. Most of the time she's hidden behind glamours to look more human..

This thread is fantastic!

This reminds me of an NPC ally in a game I once played in. It was a sort of Grey and Grey world, with two hemispheres magically separated, and my character started out on the lower tech one (it was sort of steampunk, and I joined the campaign late). I was sent by a powerful being to guard this girl, who manipulated shadows and what not (and was the avatar of a new goddess, a sort of Redeemer/Maintainer/Recreator type), and there was a rather evil fey type who also guarded her (and then 'Mr. Snake' as she called him, the eldritch evil that lived up the way, who became an erstwhile ally). This guy reminds me of how I visualized the evil fey ally, pretty but tainted and dangerous.

tl;dr version: this guy reminds me of an evil fey ally of good NPC in a campaign I once played in.

This one I'm stuck on. I really want to express the story in this image, but there's a wall somewhere blocking me from getting to it. Thoughts?

I'm reminded of the game Shadow of the Colossus - the sort of abandoned, 'fallen from grandeur' feel that the ruin gives, and the decidedly 'Nature' or 'Natural' wonder of the Gryphon (with it's fantastic coloring and frankly fantastic nature) combined with the austerity of the surroundings and the abandoned human ruin suggest, to me at least, that this character is nearing the end of his journey, or that part of his journey, having returned with a little wonder to this bleak and mundane scene. I get the feeling he is coming back, and that he is finished with something.

In a faraway Asian city, a poor young girl struggles on the edge of existence, even as awakening supernatural powers attract companionable but mysterious spirits. In the group that I was DMing not too long, one of the guys was playng a female Fighter/Ranger specialising in archery, and although he never produced any finalised artwork for her, I imagine that this would be almost perfect (she didn't have an animal companion). It was very amusing because one of the other guys is very against rangers and played a fighter "because they actually deal damage", and then she dished out the most damage. From now on we will always have a ranger in the group just to piss him off

And to keep on topic, here are a few pictures I saw on the Dungeons & Dames threads that I want to create a character for:

Nearly perfect. The shirt is all wrong for archery, though. Blousey sleeves invite misfires. The artist should have done a bit more research. :smalltongue:

This guy right here? Varisian ranger. I could see him in a Pathfinder game, starting out as a low-level enemy maybe. His mask is a dandy little gadget he pilfered from a shrine to Lamashu, letting him see in the dark like a beast. He probably hasn't been with his caravan/family in a while. He's dressed for survival, probably keeps his few possessions in the pockets and folds of his clothes.

V would be a rogue/invisible blade/master thrower with good brainwashing social skills. (Though I must admit I have not read the comic, to my eternal shame.)

The comedian (and maybe midnighter, not familiar with him) could be barbarian/dungeoncrasher, thug, zhentarim soldier fighter/(refluffed) fist of the forest.

Another one of my Jason Engle favorites. There's a soul and a story in that expression.

That image reminds me of Katara from Avatar the Last Airbender. I suppose it's not her due to a few characteristic items that are missing but it's incredibly similar.

Wow.
Middle-Earth is already epic, but those just make it even more spectacular.

Oh, and Ancalagon (I presume that's him?) is still the most badass dragon of all time.

If Tolkein were that cool, I might've enjoyed reading it more.

Especially if it had magically powered airships like in the first picture :D

Guess what? It does.

Ancalagon: (Sindarin: rushing jaws from anc 'jaw', alag 'impetuous')
The Dark Lord bred Ancalagon during the First Age to be the greatest and mightiest of all dragons, and the first of the winged ‘fire-drakes’. He arose from the inferno pits of Angband like a storm of wind and fire as a last defense of the realm of Dor Daedeloth. Near the end of the War of Wrath that pitted Morgoth’s hosts against the Host of the Valar, Morgoth sent Ancalagon leading a fleet of winged dragons from the fortress of Angband to destroy the Dark Lord’s enemies. So powerful was the assault of the dragon fleet that the Host of the Valar was driven back from the gates of Angband onto the ashy plain of Anfauglith.

From the west, Eärendil 'The Blessed' in his powerfully hallowed Elven airborne ship Vingilot, aided by Thorondor and the great Eagles, dueled with Ancalagon and the dragon fleet for an entire day. However, Eärendil at length prevailed, casting Ancalagon upon the triple-peaked towers of Thangorodrim, destroying both dragon and towers. With his last and mightiest defender slain, Morgoth was soon utterly defeated and made captive, ending the War of Wrath.
Ancalagon the Black is considered to have been the greatest dragon of Middle-earth, undoubtedly the largest, and is often referred to as the ‘father of the winged-drakes’. He was so large that his wings were able to blot out the light of the sun, even from afar, and his body was able to crush the volcanic Thangorodrim, the highest peaks in Beleriand. Like all other Urulóki, Ancalagon breathed fire, which was said to be hotter than any other known flame. However, it would not have been hot enough to harm the One Ring, for that was made by Sauron himself.

That's only because it reads like The Bible. Seriously, if you compare Silmarillion to the Bible the sentence structure and story flow seem almost identical. At least, that's my observation. It's kind of what Tolkien was going for. He was deliberately making myth in that one.

*sigh*...I just can't stop stealing from Coolvibe. I'm actually more intrigued by the opponents casually waving swords around. The hero being weird and badass and using a briefcase for a weapon, that's cool and all, but it's just him. The fact that everyone else is using swords implies something more general about the setting.
