No-Face King
http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/ff334/SoullessEnigma/No-FaceKing.jpg
"A thousand faces may not sate Them, but may keep Them distracted for a while. So I pray." – Mal, No-Face King.

It is no great secret that the Fair Folk sometimes steal a humanoid for the sake of entertainment or labour. Those poor souls so taken often have little hope of returning, for when the fae tire of their new toy, they will either dispose or simply forget them.

Changelings have more hope than others at escape. Their shapeshifting abilities, already a valuable asset in a normal life can literally save them from the whims of their new ‘benefactors’. The ability to change appearance and persona keeps them entertaining for much longer, giving them the chance to plan an escape. The strange magics of their prison aid them in this endeavour, reacting to their dreams and hopes of freedom. And one by one, the changeling strips forms and personalities from themselves, severing them and creating new, false lives. With these echoes distracting their erstwhile patron, the changeling can make good his escape.

Yet these escapees are never the same upon their return. They are denied a part of themselves, a vast gulf of personalities and forms forever gone, a void left in their place, a void that even the bittersweet magic of Faerie cannot ever truly fill.

Weapon and Armour Proficiencies: The No-Face King gains proficiency with the longsword and the rapier but gain now new proficiency with armour or shields.

Invocations: At each level other than 1st, the No-Face King gains new invocations known and an increase in caster level as if they had also gained a level in an invocation-using class to which they belonged before adding the prestige class level. You do not, however, gain any other benefits a character of that class would have gained (including eldritch blast progression, if any). If the character had more than one invocation-using class before becoming a No-Face King, they must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining caster level and invocations known.

Arcadian Blast (Sp): At first level and every odd level thereafter, the No-Face King’s eldritch blast damage increases by 1d6. In addition, they gain knowledge of the following eldritch essence invocation:

Arcadian Blast
Lesser; 4th; Eldritch Essence
You change your eldritch blast into an Arcadian blast. An Arcadian blast draws on the twisted energies of Faerie. An Arcadian blast draws on the hungering energies of Arcadia to deal untyped damage, and allows you to add your Charisma modifier to the attack and damage rolls made as part of the blast.

Discarded Faces (Ex): At first level, the No-Face King returns with much of their shapeshifting potential gone, replaced with some of the uncanny energies of Faerie. Upon gaining this class feature, the No-Face King must select a number of alternate shapes for their racial minor shape change ability equal to 3 + Cha modifier. These shapes must be exceedingly precise ('Brog the half-orc bouncer of the local inn', not 'half-orc male', for example) and are now the only shapes the No-Face king can assume using minor shape change. However, these shapes become far more intense and realistic than normal. A No-Face King using minor shape change gains the racial subtypes of their assumed form, and true seeing and similar effects can no longer pierce the disguise. However, at 2nd level and each even level thereafter, the No-Face King permanently loses access to one of these shapes and all benefits associated with it, other than those gained from this class. If they now no longer qualify for feats or prestige classes they currently possess that they gained through the Desperate Immersion and Hungering Immersion class features (see below) they lose all benefits of the feat(s) and all features of the class other than base attack bonus and base save bonuses.

Hollow-Soul Pact (Su): At first level, the No-Face King finds the metaphysical void created by their discarded faces replaced with a tie to Faerie, one of a distinctly unpleasant nature that makes itself known when they call upon the energies of Faerie. The No-Face King gains negative energy resistance 5. In addition, each No-Face King must select one of the following pacts, gaining its listed benefit.

Chokegrowth Spring: You are bound to the negative side of Spring, that of rampant, excessive growth without regard to the consequences. When you successfully hit with an Arcadian blast, you gain fast healing equal to half your class level, rounded down, for a number of rounds equal to your Charisma modifier.

Rageheat Summer: You are bound to the negative aspects of Summer, to endless days of unceasing heat, of tempers frayed and unleashed. When you successfully hit with an Arcadian blast, you gain a morale bonus to attack and damage rolls equal to half your class level, rounded down, for a number of rounds equal to your Charisma modifier.

Dustharvest Autumn: You are bound to the negative side of Autumn, the slow but inevitable encroachment of lack and famine. When you successfully hit with an Arcadian blast, the struck opponent takes a penalty to AC and Fortitude saving throws equal to half your class level, rounded down, for a number of rounds equal to your Charisma modifier.

Sorrowchill Winter: You are bound to the negative aspects of Winter, to days engulfed in night and to the slow death of the year. When you successfully hit with an Arcadian blast, the struck opponent takes vile damage equal to half your class level, rounded down, each round for a number of rounds equal to your Charisma modifier.

Hollow-Soul Lore (Sp): At 2nd level, the Arcadian voices left in the echoing void of the No-Face King's soul whisper eldritch secrets to their host, teaching them a new invocation tied to their Hollow-Soul pact.

Chokegrowth Lifetheft
Lesser; 4th
You create a mass of parasitic plant growth that drains the life force of others to bolster your own. This invocation functions as entangle, except that you can move the area of effect up to your land speed as a move action. In addition, the DC to escape the effect is increased by an amount equal to your Charisma modifier and any creature that ends its turn within the area of chokegrowth lifetheft are affected as though by a healing sting spell cast by you.

Rageheat Outburst
Lesser; 4th
You enter a fury so pure that it reduces you to a more primal state. This invocation functions as bite of the werewolf. In addition, whilst under the effects of rageheat outburst, you may use your Cha modifier in place of your Strength modifier for melee attack and damage rolls.

Dustharvest Faminecurse
Lesser; 4th
With a spiteful utterance, you lay the weight of famine and thirst upon a creature. This invocation functions as dehydrate, except that it deals Constitution damage equal to 1d4 + your Charisma modifier. In addition, regardless of whether the target succeeds on their Fortitude save, they become fatigued.

Sorrowchill Obfuscation
Lesser; 4th
You shroud yourself in the pitch blackness of the northern winter night. This invocation functions as armour of darkness, save that it lasts for 24 hours once cast.

Desperate Immersion (Ex): At 4th level, the No-Face King desperately immerses himself in what forms he has left, even as the void in his soul seems to grow. The No-Face King's minor shape change is now an extraordinary ability. Furthermore, he gains the racial ability score bonuses of any currently adopted shape. In addition, he now always possess the racial subtypes of all his forms for the purposes of activating magic items and meeting the prerequisites of feats, but not prestige classes. Furthermore, his resistance to negative energy increases to 10.

Hollow-Soul Presence (Su): At 6th level, the No-Face King's inner emptiness begins to leak out beyond the limits of his body. The No-Face King's negative energy resistance increases to 15, and bestows this trait upon any ally within 30ft. In addition, they receive another benefit depending on their Hollow-Soul Pact.

Chokegrowth Spring: You and each ally within 30ft of you gain an unholy bonus to Reflex saves equal to your Charisma modifier. Any ally within 30ft of you at the start of their turn gains temporary hp equal to your class level or Charisma modifier, whichever is higher.

Rageheat Summer: You and each ally within 30ft gain an unholy bonus to Fortitude saves equal to your Charisma modifier. Any foe that begins their turn within 30ft of you takes fire damage equal to class level or Charisma modifier, whichever is higher.

Dustharvest Autumn: You and each ally within 30ft gain an unholy bonus to Will saves equal to your Charisma modifier. Any foe that begins their turn within 30ft of you takes 1d6 points of non-lethal damage per class level.

Sorrowchill Winter: You and each ally within 30ft gain an unholy bonus on saves against death, necromancy and negative energy effects equal to your Charisma modifier. Any foe that begins their turn within 30ft of you must make a Fortitude save (DC 10 + class level + Charisma modifier) or take 1d2 points of Constitution damage.

Hungering Immersion (Ex): At 8th level the No-Face King's obsession with his remaining shapes deepens yet further. At the start of each day, he gains a +2 racial bonus to one ability score that any one of his shapes possess a racial ability score bonus to, regardless of the shape he takes. In addition, he now always possesses the racial subtypes of his other shapes for all purposes, including qualifying for prestige classes.

Hollow-Soul Claimed (Ex): At 10th level, the void in the No-Face King's soul has grown too great, and he is but one step away from becoming the empty creatures that took him in the first place. His type changes to fey, gaining all traits of that type. He also loses the ability to use minor shape change, though he retains his current number of chosen alternate shapes and all benefits granted thereby - he simply cannot adopt those shapes.

However, his form remains mercurial, and he gains some of the control over one's form that the great fey lords do. At the start of each day, the No-Face King gains a number of Mien Points equal to their Charisma modifier to purchase Seemings and Kiths from the lists below. The selected Seemings and Kiths last for 24 hours.

Each day, the No-Face King must buy at least one Seeming with his Mien Points. Kiths are associated with given Seemings, and if the No-Face King purchases any Kiths with his Mien Points for the day, he must include a Kith associated with any Seemings he has chosen for the day.

A No-Face King is not required to spend all his Mien Points for the day, but all Mien Points to be assigned for the day must be done so at once - the character cannot spend most of her Mien Points in the morning and spend the rest at some later point in the day.

As much as I really like this class, both thematically and mechanically, it strikes me as being very, very powerful. But seeing as how you have to start as a warlock with a changeling feat...might be justifiable.

I have sadly never seen Spirited Away. But I guess with some select choice of fey parts for Hollow-Soul Claimed you could recreate the linked character if you so wished.

Don't you basically need a CHA of 24 before entering this PrC? Otherwise you run out of shapes and lose many benefits of this PrC.

Edge
2010-05-04, 02:56 PM
You are restricted to 3 + Cha mod shapes at the 1st level of the PrC, then lose 5 over the course of its progression. By level 10, that's -2 + Cha mod shapes. As long as they have Cha 18 (+4 modifier) or higher, they get at least one shape. And by that point, their Cha should probably be higher than 18.

I love this class, btw, very awesome flavor. It may find use in my next game! *bookmarked*

Ah, I had missed the "even" level part.

Do subsequent CHA increases raise the number of shapes, then?

Magic items do increase this, but nothing more temporary than that. Anything that can provide a consistent and long-term increase to the No-Face King's sense of self will allow they to reclaim more of what they lost from their inner void.

Glad you like it.

A bump because I have heavily reworked the capstone and want thoughts on it desperately.

It's confusing because there are several contradictions.

Discarded Faces / However, at 2nd level and each even level thereafter, the No-Face King permanently loses access to one of these shapes and all benefits associated with it.

So that would apply to these as well:

Desperate Immersion / The No-Face King's minor shape change is now an extraordinary ability. Furthermore, he gains the racial ability score bonuses of any currently adopted shape. In addition, he now always possess the racial subtypes of all his forms for the purposes of activating magic items and meeting the prerequisites of feats, but not prestige classes

Hungering Immersion / At the start of each day, he gains a +2 racial bonus to one ability score that any one of his shapes possess a racial ability score bonus to, regardless of the shape he takes.

---

So as he advances in levels he loses the ability to change shape and all abilities that are derived from it. Desperate Immersion and Hungering Immersion would be affected. I dunno. It seems weird to lose your class features as you progress through the class.

I like the new capstone. I would recommend eliminating the strange thing about gradually losing change shape (also the restriction to a specific number) - either you have change shape or you don't. Easier that way.

Instead of the Desperate & Hungering abilities, why not replace them with the Seeming & Kith mechanics? Ditch the Immersions, completely drop change shape, and spread out the Seemings and Kiths across the levels of the prestige class. Might make it easier to understand and less complex.

An Arcadian blast deals negative energy damage, even if the target would normally be healed by negative energy damage

This is just silly. This is like making a class with an ability that goes something. . "up is now down. . ." in how it ignores the 'physics' of the D&D world.

This is entirely intentional. The magic of Fairy consumes more and more of what the No-Face King is, leaving eldritch power behind in an attempt to fill the gap.

And yes, as you level up, when you lose a shape, you lose any benefit it provided you through Desperate Immersion and Hungering Immersion.

Eh... I'm leery about that because the loss of minor change shape is one of the main points of the class - you use your other identities and personae as buffers against the power of Faerie to keep your true self intact.

Big woop. They can hurt undead with it. I only went with this because there's no energy type to represent what I wanted. If it helps, fluffwise, think of it of as the all-consuming hunger of Faerie rather actual negative energy.

Hmmm. I like the idea and flavor of the class. It's really neat. But the mechanics are weird and confusing, and would deter me from playing the class.

Why not just have it be untyped damage and describe it as the "raw, draining hunger and emptiness of Faerie"? The X-but-not-X-in-any-way approach is probably what was the issue.

That and Faerie is usually [in D&D anyway] linked with vibrant life [i know, it was originally the underworld but that's, for some reason, the impression people seem to have now]
