So my prom was tonight. It was AWESOME. Then me and some friends went bowling. Pretty much an amazing night.

Just wanted to tell someone, and everyone at my house is asleep.

Anyone else had their prom (or whatever it's called in other countries) yet?

Just as a public display of my ignorance, what exactly is a prom? I gather that it is some kind of dance thing that one is expected to dress up for.

Zoot, I would imagine that it's equivalent to our formal.

Good to hear that you had fun; although, pics or it didn't happen

Its a formal dance in the spring, popular in America. If you've ever seen the movie American Pie, it contains a lot of the stereotypes of prom.

I'm glad you had fun. I never went to prom, and I don't miss it. Its much too overhyped in the US.

My own prom back in high school was a train wreck. The girl I asked to be my date said she was "busy," so I brought someone else. I was secretly bitter the whole time and acted like a jerk.

As I was bringing her home (my dad was driving), I fell asleep in the back seat and was drooling with my mouth open.

Then I became a teacher. And my school let me go to the prom for free as a chaperone. Free food can't be overrated at all.

Last January would be my last prom at that school as I was resigning to transfer to another school. I decided it would be special, so I called a former co-teacher and asked her if she'd be my date. She agreed.

We arrived early, so we ended up talking a lot. Apparently her prom was a train wreck too, since nobody danced with her except for the guy who dances with all the girls nobody else dances with. I told her about my sucky prom, and told her we could make up for our respective proms ten years after the fact.

So we danced for---quite a long time. Some of my female students wanted to dance with me, but they didn't want to interrupt us. When I leaned over to ask her:

"So, have we made up for our sucky proms?"
"More than enough."

Drove her home, left her some flowers. She told me she really enjoyed how perfect everything was.

Happy ending, ten years later. (Not THAT kind of happy ending. :smalltongue: )

EDIT: If we're going to go "pics or it didn't happen"...

I really misread that title when I first saw it...

Anyway, prom... I didn't go to my prom, since the girl I wanted to go with already had a boyfriend and was going to compete in the nationals in gymnastics. So I went with her instead and we won.

The year after that we went together to hers instead. It was nice, but I'll always remember the competition and the bus trip to and from it. Very special.

My school's "prom" split itself into 3 parts. The first involved feeling awkward drinking with teachers around that didn't spend their lunch times in the pub (year head etc.)

This gave way to most of the teachers wandering off to go for a meal and the alcohol started to flow more liberally (it was at the end of this part that I started flirting with the art technician). Bowties and assorted peripherals are removed/lost during this time, and a ridiculous amount of knock-off cigars appear from nowhere, which was apparently a tradition.

The final section involved the entire final year group invading a nightclub in town and effectively claiming it as ours for the night. This ended in some people waiting 3 hours for a taxi and 1 girl just left the top half of her dress behind.

All-in-all it was fun, the school even made up it's own drink that used the school colours, which was nice of them. Though in retrospect holding it on the waterfront was a mistake, no less than 6 people almost fell in whilst intoxicated.

The proms here typically don't have alcohol due to the drinking age; the kids do that at after-parties instead.

Hmm. Well, considering I've been to 4 proms, all told, I think I've had a good run of things as a younger Coidzor.

Though the last one which was this past year I don't know if I should count due to it being a small thing for a private school and the reason for being there being a lesbian who was lying that she was bi so that I'd be her date. (I kinda disapprove of lying to me, especially in my friends. No idea where I got that outlandish idea)

Was actually in a Macy's today, with the current... flame. Was reminded of the tedium and sexual tension of going prom dress shopping with my ex-fiance by that. Was trippy.

Technically that's why our secondary school one fell through; people would rather just have their own parties than pay to go to one where they couldn't drink and had to follow teacher-based rules.

The 6th Form one however, was much more entertaining.

Not bad memories :

The year had been exceptionally good, as 23 out of a class of 24 graduated. This was thanks to the "No More Second Session In The Last Year" policy the school was trying to enforce that year to motivate students to take things more seriously. They hoped that, this way, the average grades would increase. It backfired spectacularly, as none of us worked any harder and the teachers ended up having to choose between having 3/4 of the promotion fail, sometimes only for a few percents, or letting most of us go through even if we hadn't succeeded in all fields.

Nothing to be proud of but I liked the "elitism failed" feeling back then.

The party was organized in the center of Brussel, in some very large basement, although the ceiling was really low. For most of the night, people were divided between :

Those who danced, at the center, in several small groups, near the DJ.
Those who went back and forth between the buffet and what was used as a bar.
Those who discussed near the entrance.

I basically drifted between the three. Got lot's of free food, volunteered to make the drinks for an hour or so, had the chance to dance a slow with the girl I had a crush for. Also, I had something of a mystic experience dancing circle, arms locked with a dozen or so people, jumping on a remix of this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l11GyqVu_-o)...with very low ceiling, as we all experienced when the frenzy reached its climax. Painful but we all laugh too hard to really care.

Night ended in the first bus on the morning, with two buddies, all of us three pretty much drunk and too tired to speak.

Didn't go to my prom because of confidence issues. Couldn't ask a girl out since freshman year, because of a terrible experience (i hate liars). Fast forward to a year later and i'm on a date with my current fiance. Guess I got over it quick

Also, dances never interested me. Mostly because i'd be without a date, hate dancing, and considered it a waste of time when i could be doing more productive things. Like watching TV. I had weird logic when in highschool.

Our prom is only for Grade 12s (which is the equivalent to 6ish form for all you brits), but we do have a semi-formal next year.

Yay for being at a poor school, I suppose. I'm sorta excited for the next dance, because I believe one of my friends is gonna be djing, and he's good. When I say good, I mean not only does he play better music than usual, but he can remix on the fly.

While my year's Ball (yeah, we call it a Ball instead :smallcool:) isn't until next year, but some of my friends already have crazy plans.
Mainly due to the fact that at my school it is tradition to arrive to the Ball in incredibly OTT ways, for example by Limo or Helicopter. Not sure what crazy way I'll make my entrance though.

Get a motorbike-honour guard. Like they have for important heads of state.

Our school didn't organize a prom, that was left to the students. So preparations involved:
"You - go rent a basement or something.
You - buy a bottle of vodka and a six-pack for everyone. I'll go collect the money."

Yes, that was the entire extent of the preparations. I didn't go.

If you know the right kind of people, like I would, arrive escorted by Marines (preferably costumers, not the real deal) wearing full battle dress, with you handcuffed and wearing prison stripes. Bonus points if they drive black SUVs or Hummers. Alternatively, a squad of knights in full armor.

...Yes, I'm weird.

We don't have actual proms in Finland. Although, during our second high school year (high school takes three years here, usually) when we are like 17-18, we have this event called "Wanhat tanssit" which translates to "The Senior Ball" or something like that (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanhojen_tanssit). :smalltongue:

It's actually more like a ball than a prom now that I think about it. First we spend the winter practising old ballroom dances and then (when we are (hopefully) able to dance through them without any major fails) on a specific date in February ...our families come to watch. Hmm, well it's something like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PP2KYFONw8U&feature=related).. The quality on that could be better...:(

And girls get to dress up in pretty evening dresses and waste completely irrational amounts of money on hairdresser and make-up.:smallsigh:

:smallsmile:But it was fun. Really fun. And it helped that in my school we had no pressure in finding a partner, because if you couldn't find one the teacher arranged it for you, on my year at least. And nothing went horribly wrong during the whole day even if there were countless possibilities for that. Guess Murphy and his Law were on holiday...:smallwink:
