The room that the five entered was sparsely decorated; aside from the chairs set facing the setting sun, the only real feature in the room was a map, showing the length and breadth of the known world. They had come here for different reasons, and from different lands, but all recognized each other as fellow guild members. All bore the seal of SEUL on their garments. And all knew the face of the only other person in the room.

Marcus Blackstone was not a handsome man. His hair had gone gray ten years ago, his face was unshaven, and he bore several nasty scars, including one that appeared to be from a noose. His voice was quiet and hoarse; his speech slow. But his gaze was level, and his hands neatly crossed behind his back as he nodded towards the seats. One of the Three who led SEUL, his accomplishments were legendary. And he had a task for you.

"Please sit down. Before I explain why you are here, state your name and abilities."

Kinadia bows her head, and with a smile replies to Marcus, "I am Kinadia, a healer of body and mind, and mender of hostilities. I wield magic to close wounds and repair damage, and calm emotions." With that, she takes her seat.

The second of the five to sit is a young woman wearing a leather mask of some kind with glass lenses embedded in front, extending down to a metallic cylinder that hangs from her chin strangely. The odd mask covers her entire face and leaves only her eyes peering out of the lenses, and its straps curve around her bald skull to tie in the back. A skin-tight black bodysuit and corset emphasize the extremely buxom shape of her body and covers her from throat to toe, but leaves her arms bare. She wears two long black gloves that extend to her toned biceps, and her only other adornment appears to be a satchel bag hanging from one shoulder. Little of her bald head can be seen outside the mask, but what parts can be seen are covered in hideous burns.

Her voice, however, is a startling contrast to the allure of her body as she harshly rasps through her mask, "I'm Iskellia, and I can move things with my mind..." she lowers her voice at this last bit, followed by an odd chuckle.

Vernon

When Vernon enters he seems to be busy counting or calculating something. He looks up for a split second to say: "Hi Marcus", then sits down and continues to work on whatever he is busy with right now.

Vernon is still quite young, but has already a good name in the society. His drive to find out the truth behind mysteries and understand things is legendary. He is also known for being a geek's geek. His clothes are mismatched, but practical as he seems to wear whatevers serves best at any given moment.

Kangar walked in after the third man and wiped something off his face with a loud snort.

"Ello guvner, *cough* *ahem*, Hello Master Blackstone, haven't seen yeh since that last fight long ago since I first joined this fine organization. er, if yeh don't remember, I'm Kangar Thunderfist, the brute that beat the faces of ne'erdowells in the tavern, that is before I joined with SEUL"

Kangar takes a heavy seat on the chair, his legs danging a little as it wasn't designed for people of his shorter stature. Kangar is a dwarf, a rather scarred and cut up dwarf with shaggy manelike hair and gray eyes. He wears fine adamantine chain shirt and an adamaintine pair of gauntlets on his fist. Underneath his armor he wears a Vest with the SEUL insigna intertwined with the name and picture of his father's tavern.

Tilda takes a seat, and raises her hand to her face to check on her masks positioning, and looks at the group assembled in the room. She is wearing a brightly coloured green dress that sparkled, her hair up, powdered and adorned with matching feathers, this compares strangely with the fact she is also barefoot.

She takes a seat next to Vernon, and peers around the room examining the people carefully before speaking up.

"So Marcus, felt it was time for me to take another break from my research? I am Tilda, and I am for the most part a researcher of antiquities, I also quite the deft hand when it comes to applied necromancy. "

She smiles behind her mask, watching for any reaction from the assembled group.

"I suppose while we are getting to know each other I should mention this, I am infact dead."

At her last words Vernon looks up and says, in a rather toneless and matter-of-fact way: "Miss Tilda, did you become undead voluntarily or was it done to you against your will?"

He looks at her with wide, curious eyes, taking in all the details he can see.

"So were you not going to introduce yourself to the group young man?"

She relaxes back in her chair, enjoying the fact that she had revealed the parts of herself that normally worried the irrational, without anyone desparately digging in their pockets for religious symbols. Perhaps she really was in the company of true knowledge seekers.

"Its the lack of little sandwiches that lets me know this might be serious, so what is it."

As the five sit down, and begin their discussions, Marcus clears his throat. The room instantly becomes silent.

"This will be a six-man group. The five of you, and one other, who has already begun the journey to the dig site. Observe."

The windows blank out, and instead of the setting sun, now show an impressively detailed map of an area. At times, his hoarse, scratchy voice is hard to make out, but he speaks slowly enough that this is not a pressing issue.

"This valley lies in the foothills of the Euclid mountains, a two week journey north of west. About three months ago, a five-man expedition discovered it, along with a set of ruins-here." He gestures at a symbol on the map. "As per standard protocol, they set up a dig site, and began to transmit findings back to us. Three days ago, these message suddenly stopped. We wish for you to find out what happened to the team, and attempt to recover any of their notes on the ruin. Tilda, any further writings about the ruin would be most helpful. Because." His voice tightens, and he his forced to gasp for air.

"We believe that these ruins are a relic of the Times Before. And it is imperative that we recover what we can from such ancient structures. That is what SEUL was originally founded for, and that's what we must do. Are there any questions?"

Marcus fumbles for a seat on the window sill.

"As you know, the modern era is not one for others to envy. Small splintered kingdoms, some nothing more than collections of barbarous tribes, each constantly bickering and fighting with each other. Starvation is commonplace in the countryside, and in the cities. Monsters roam freely in the wilderness, and our magic is new enough that we have not eliminated this problems.

But there was a time when all this was not true. A Golden Age of peace and prosperity. Where melons were the size of wagons, and the futile struggle of man against man was ended. Where cities reached into the abode of the gods, and we were masters of sky and sea and land. The Times Before. To find the knowledge of the Ancients, even a scrap of information would help the world achieve its former glory. To understand their secrets, their culture."

"And who has command of this mission in the field?" Tilda asks once Marcus finishes his explanation, while she always finds his views and passion on the very reason for the existance of the society, she was eager to get going. This mission was intriguing, and the sooner they left the sooner they could either rescue or recover the previous expedition.

She had a rather sneaking suspicion that the real reason for her inclusion in the group was if, the very worst had happened she was capable of information retrieval from the lips and minds of the dead.

There is a swirl of dust in the corner, and then a halfling is standing there, blinking. She's dressed in long, flowing robes, with flat sandals on her feet. She has striking features and long dark hair, but dust and age seem etched into the lines of her face.

"My apologies for my unavoidable delay. My name is Elzbeta Caracul, and I am a sculptor - of materials and magic. I am relatively new to your organization, so I hope you won't mind the occasional dunderheaded question."

The halfling woman glides over to the chairs to take a place with the others. She examines the map.

"If there are no other plans to expedite the two week travel, I may be able to assist, if there are just the six of us."

Thanks for trying to write me in later, Industrious. I'll try to catch up.

"A true Golden Age that is," Kinadia says, her voice trailing off. She turns inward for a moment, doing what looks like a bit of thinking.

People in the past achieved real peace. What ended such a golden thing? I wonder, also, if peace can be achieved in this era...

When she next looks up, she notices a new face in the room, belonging to a halfling. After her introduction, Kinadia waves in greeting, then turns to Marcus. "We know nothing of the other team's disappearance? Whether it was due to hostilities or becoming trapped in the ruin?"

How about planning a stroll for our way back? We should get going as quickly as possible."

The halfling nods at Tilda, and is about to respond when Kangar speaks up about teleporting.

"I'm not one for missing the scenery, but if there is a chance that this is a rescue mission, I have a way to conjure magical horses to ride, that travel faster and more steadily than any horse, even over mud or water. A journey of two weeks might take us only three or four days. It's very draining for me, and I'd appreciate a chance to rest at the end of the process, but I'd be happy to help out in this way."

Elzbeta, feeling that she has disturbed the flow of conversation enough, turns back to listen to Marcus.

If we assume that walking would take us 2 weeks, Phantom Steeds travelling for 13 hours can probably get us there in 2 days, maybe 3.

"Del we are leaving, adventures, now. I assume you have a decent array of gear packed.

She couldn't help but chuckle a little seeing nothing but the portable hole she used for storing more troublesome research specimens waiting on the end of her bed. The little demon had done well and was currently sitting next to the portable hole in the form of a toad.

"Well lets get gone."

"I have been on quite a few missions already, over the last 10 years or so. I was born in this building, you see, born into SEUL, so to speak. My parents both work for SEUL. My father leads expeditions while my mother organises things here, at base. Being the curious person I am, I had to know more, always. I was never happy with knowledge alone, I need to understand. That's what drives me, deep inside. Knowledge is only half as useful without understanding. At least that's the way I see things."

"Born into SEUL, very interesting that is, its an amazing society when you really look at it would you believe when I started my work here I was already dead and desparately hunting for somewhere that I would be allowed to perform my research in peace rather than pieces.

Just be careful with your driving ambition, trust me on this sometimes when you let it consume you unusual things can happen say exchanging life for potential to learn more. The reason I prefer knowledge to understanding is purely because I know that the more knowledge I gain, the more it fits together to form understanding over time, it might seem like splitting hairs but it makes sense from a certain perspective.

So is your desire to understand the reason you don't seem too uncomfortable with my status?"

"I see no reason to be 'uncomfortable with your status', as you put it. I am pretty liberal in my fews as I don't want to judge what I see or find before I know it well enough to have an opinion. By your own words, you decided to seek a longer lifespan in order to be able to learn more. You are no lich, no vampire, so I see no reason to fear you. It is a decission I would not want to make for myself, at least right now. I am still young, you see?"

Elzbeta settles in the courtyard, a respectful distance from the crusty dwarf, and begins creating shimmering horse-like beasts. For the imperious Iskellia, perhaps a creature of pure black smoke. For Vernon, a friendly looking chestnut mare. Kangor said he didn't like horses...so, perhaps something in the form of an ox would suit him better. For the hasty Tilda, a sleek creamy horse with long slender legs fading to tufts of mist. Kinadia, she didn't have a good sense of yet, so simply created a simple grey stallion. If they were to be spending all day with these creatures, perhaps a sense of aesthetic comfort might make up for the lack of physical amenities.

Iskellia circles around the inky smoke horse warily. She doesn't seem entirely sure what to make of it, but when she tentatively pokes it, her hand passes through like mist. Her eyes widen under the mask, and she lets out a chidlike gasp of wonder. She waves her hand through the horse a few more times, and then seems to decide on something.

Suddenly and silently, the young woman floats into the air, her arms spread as though in flight as she rises upwards a few feet and settles tentatively on the back of the shadow beast. Upon finding the saddle solid enough to sit upon, she jerks in surprise, but the shadow beast only turns its head back and gives her a smoldering look.

Iskellia looks over at Elzbeta, her expression unreadable behind the mask except for her wide bright-green eyes. "What is he?" she rasps, and a torrent of questions bursts forth. "How did you do that? Is it like smoke? Is he real? Can I keep h--" she breaks off suddenly, descending into a painful coughing fit that doubles her over in her saddle. She fumbles for her mask with trembling hands and presses it tightly to her face, sucking huge gulps of air for several moments until the hacking coughs subside.

Iskellia slumps forward wearily in her saddle, still clutching her mask in one hand as she wheezes raspily, idly stroking the shadow horse with her other hand.

As for the horse...you're welcome to keep him - indeed, no one else can ride him. But he will vanish by soon tomorrow morning."

Casting about for a way to broach the obvious subject without actually doing so, Elzbeta ventures.

The phantom steeds truly are wonderful. Tireless, inhumanely swift, and surprisingly comfortable to ride, despite the lack of saddle. Although the lack of noise the steeds make is unnerving, to say the least. There is something amazingly familiar about a steed having the decency to pant or whinny.

Journeying north, the SEUL rescue team, after a hard day's ride, finds themselves on a vast and desolate plain, and are camped in the shadow of the mountains. Elzbeta drifts softly down off of her ghostly brown pony, sending it fluttering back to the shadows with a casual flick of her hand. As she reaches the ground, Elzbeta bends and scoops up a double handful of the dry, cracked earth, holding it to her nose and inhaling rapturously.

"Ah. Close. Closer than I've been for some time."

She has taken no food or water over the day, but seems unaffected by this. Instead, she takes off her shoes and digs her feet into the loose earth.

Mmmmm. Yes. Better."

She drizzles some of the earth over her robes, chanting. Her skin, already dark, flares black for a moment, while her deep brown eyes turn a bright, reptilian yellow. She turns with a faint smile to her companions and speaks with a formal tone.

"Thank you all for a most enjoyable day of travel. I do my best sculpting at night, and do not sleep very much. My eyes are good in the darkness. If you wish, I would be pleased to keep watch first."

Elzbeta is using Dust Magic to cast extended versions of Mage Armour, Dragonsight and Endure Elements. This should give her, among other things, 130' darkvision and 65' blindsense. Thanks to her ring of sustenance, she doesn't need to sleep much. More than Tilda, of course, but less than some others. I'm assuming that puttering in the dirt for part of the night can still count as restful activity.

Smiling companionably as the others settle in, Elzbeta finds a low mound of earth and scoops it up into a loose cone. Perhaps they wouldn't mind. Who first? Kinaidia. The titian sun-priestess already looked like her body had been carved out of the earth. Elzbeta pulls out a small canvas bag of tools and lovingly pulls out what looks like a broad trowel.

Slowly, the cone of earth began to rise and take shape. A human shape. A beatific woman, arms raised and palms upward to the sun, but her face tilted a bit to the side and downwards, as if caught between potentiality and imperfection. A simple, rippling shift that flows into the ground from which the statue seems to spring.

After about twenty minutes and a scraping of earth away, Elzbeta put away her tool. She turns now to a slight magic to finish it off. The earth tones of the dirt and sand gradually transform into vibrant flesh tones, and the shift a shimmering series of floral yellows. Finally, the hair. Hair was always hard. Trying to get the sense of lightness and flow from sand - it was fighting the medium. Still, she did what she could with a few dramatic shadows and a pair of exaggerated highlights.

Elzeta took a step back, her toes curling into the earth, deep in thought. Well, it would be a start. Turning to Kinaidia, she shrugs.

"Well? What do you think?"

Iskellia and Kinadia are lucky in their search. Some prior party had left a stack of the stuff behind; there is more than enough to have a cheerful blaze aflame within the next ten minutes, as the flint and tinder had gotten misplaced in the journey, and a mad little scramble for the instruments took place.

Del reports back to his mistress that there is nothing to be seen in the area, but Elzbeta notices something else. There is something approaching the camp.

After her desert eyes confirm that the strange wind-creature is indeed gone, Elzbeta descends slowly to the ground. She smiles broadly at Vernon.

"A warrior as well as a scholar, I see. Thank you so much."

She glances with some disappointment at the ground, and then looks around at her companions.

"Much as I might enjoy sleeping out in the honest soil this evening, I...I have no idea why a fog creature would be attacking us, and I don't intend to sleep out in the open. I can create a small place apart, a place very difficult to find. I will be sleeping there tonight...and maybe in the future. You are all welcome to join me."

Pulling out a slender coil of rope, she tosses one end up, and it catches in the air about 20 feet up. She drifts upward and out of sight - and after anyone who wishes joins her, the rope slithers up and also vanishes.

The morning dawns clear, and the dark-skinned halfling reappears, spiralling down to the ground.

Kangar was up and about far before anyone else, limbering up and doing his morning exercises to make sure that he would be at the top of his brawling game by the time the rest of the group was ready to go. He ate a meal of rations made from home and prepared himself mentally for the ride...

When the party encountered the old man snoring at the sign post, Kangar's first reaction was wondering where the old man's children were to take care of him. But when some of his companions suddenly tensed, he realized that all may not be what it may seem. He got off of his horse, and took his position in front of the party, ready to tackle the old man if need be.

Iskellia stares quietly into the flames, her mask still wheezing audibly as a faint shudder runs over her frame. Slowly, the woman raises a slender hand up in front of her face, gazing at the silhouette it makes against the campfire. Another shudder runs over her, and as the sounds coming out of her mask stop and start jerkingly, it becomes clear that she is holding back sobs inside her expressionless mask.

Elzbeta rolls up to sit with her back to the notional wall in her strange wild-space, and gathers her thoughts for a time. She struggled, as always, to open herself to new experiences, to new images. Expiate old grief with new joy.

Since they were heading into a dangerous unknown, she also did her best to prepare herself with magics for sight and protection.

After a time, she climbs out of the space, retrieving the rope as she did so. Gently, she and her air servant drift downward to greet the others who are early risers. Or those who, like Tilda, simply don't sleep.

"Good morning. I trust that your sleep was undisturbed? I had expected dreams of men sleeping at crossroads, but no such visions came to me."

As had been her wont, Elzbeta took no breakfast, but simply began poking around in the tents.

Elzbeta casts Endure Elements, Dragonsight and an extended version of Mage Armour before descending.

In the camp, she will cast detect magic, and use that and dragonsight to confirm that there's nothing unusual, magical invisible, etc hanging around there. Search: [roll0]

Iskellia wakes up in front of the ashes of the campfire. The sight of the burnt, airy flakes of wood gives her another shudder of terror as old memories take hold of her. The rising inferno of flames, the screams...

The young woman seizes her skull and curls into a fetal ball, moaning softly until the mental barrage passes. Slowly, as she begins to hear the sound of birds again, Iskellia slowly climbs to her feet and begins rustling around in her pack for some breakfast.

After breaking her fast, she looks up as Elzbeta floats down to greet the camp. Iskellia shakes her head in response. "I haven't slept well in years," she croaks hoarsely.

The dig itself is inside the hill. Originally covered by untold eons of accumulated dirt and mud, a landslide had uncovered the site itself. The path itself ends at a cave, where tool marks indicate the work the survey team had done. The group enters the cave, and through the cavern's twists and turns, eventually find themselves in darkness, the cave's mouth nowhere to be seen.

The walls of the now-obviously artificial cavern are adorned with several painted signs, colored in brilliant yellows and deep blacks. Runes of some strange and unknown formation are repeated in blocks, straight lines of symbols. An oft repeated symbol is that of a small black circle, surrounded by three arcs.

Yet there are some symbols that are far more easily discernable. A stylized skull with two crossed bones, enclosed in a bolt of lightning. A man, lying on the ground. They are obvious in their purpose. Turn back they say. Turn back now.

There are no traps as of yet.

Vernon's analysis of the symbols reveals only halting clues as to its purpose. The death's head symbol needs no explanation, but a closer examination of the more abstract circle-and-arcs yields little. He dimly recalls speculation by one of the SEUL senior lecturers that the symbol signified apocalypse and doom in the Times Before. Furthermore, he recognizes part of the runes engraved and painted onto the walls; something to do with...life. Apocalypse and life. Rather dueling themes.

The walls of the cavern are made of some strange smooth gray stone. Interestingly enough, it appears to be one continuous surface, instead of individual quarried pieces. Vernon has never seen its like before.
