For a backup character.

What's the best way to make a gish out of an artificer? What's a good stat distribution on 36 points? Prestige classes(Is renegade mastermaker any good?)?

Can such a character be made to pull his weight in a party that already has a barbarian and a warblade?

All official 3.5 material is permitted. Psionics are discouraged but not forbidden.

You could try to play a Meleeficer. Read the Artificer Handbook section about them: http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?PHPSESSID=crpemf8jd3oih105nso7pjle11&topic=5929.0

Renegade Mastermaker...not really worth it. Play a warforged instead and roleplay him as a level 10 renegade mastermaker. No difference whatsoever.

Remember that artificers dont generally multiclass unless they get spell lists out of it and only for 1 level (so they wont have to roll UMD checks to activate the items with those spells on it). Thus, you should play a straight artificer focusing on bolstering his melee prowess.

Attune Magic Weapon is a must for this type of character. It is like weapon focus and half a weapon specialisation for any magical weapon you weild. And it stacks with wep focus/specialisation.

As for stats: go with a 16 in STR, a 12 in DEX, a 14 CON, a 14 in INT, 14 WIS and 12 CHA. You can dump WIS if you dont want to focus on casting divine spells reliably from items.

Metamagic Item-infusion combined with Persistent Spell and various Wands (Eternal and otherwise as applicable) is the heart and soul of Meleeificer; then you are ClericandWizardandDruidzilla with tons of insane spells on you and yeah. Of course, buff Infusions too. But Metamagic Item gets you Divine Power and the like.

Renegade Mastermaker's great...If you are a moron and don't use Warforged or Warforged Scout

However, I say take Swashbuckler

Renegade Mastermaker's great...If you are a moron and don't use Warforged or Warforged ScoutRenegade Mastermaker isn't great for any race. While warforged artificer has great flavour, I wouldn't declare them the best race for the job. Warforged scouts just suck.

He wwas reffering to the fact that you get everything you need from renegade mastermaker by being a warforged or a warforged scout. Warforged dont qualify for Renegade Mastermaker by not being living beings, but being living constructs.

Before level 7:
Attune Personal Weapon infusion + Bane enhancement.
Add default Cleric/Wizard/Ranger/Paladin/Bard buffs via Spell Storing Item.
If you have Wands that can be persisted (Swift Haste, Swift Fly, Wraithstrike, Divine Power, whatever), start persisting.

At and beyond level 7:
Make wands of spells that can be persisted [from any list in the game]. Persist them. Smash everything.
