The four of you, along with a few other companions you met on the road, have just arrived in town. You have passed through the wooden gates to a town full of people. Carts and shops adorn the streets, and your air is no longer tainted by the dust of a dirt road. Still lingering is the smell of animals, but you barely notice it, having grown up with it, same as anyone else. The buildings of the town are themselves varied. There are thatched huts next to two story stone buildings, and this chaos increases the further in you go. Soon, you come to the marketplace, outside the stone wall of the castle. You sit on the edge of the great fountain, a gift of the Anubins. It is made of stone, same as anything else, yet lined with a metal that will not tarnish, and by some feat of either engineering or magic, you neither know nor care which, a golden statue of Etna is surrounded by water that flows up and then falls back into the fountain. Here you may drink and fill your stores, one of the great wealths of the city is the water, even this far from any visible overland sources.

Grettir looks around eyes wide open and slack-jawed "Have you ever seen something like this? So many people, so many smells how can they find anything here"

Cáel

Mimicking another traveling, Cáel fills his waterskin at the fountain after cupping a handful to taste himself. His bedraggled beard now dripping, he taps the fountain's rim, pondering aloud "I wonder what sort of metal this is...It looks like treated iron, but doesn't rust..."

Aiden tries to remember how the fountain got here and why...

...while at the same time trying to politely respond to Grettir, saying "I think they manage as a matter of habit. Would they not say much the same if set loose in a bog or the deep forest?"

Knowledge (History) DC 10
During the ratification of the Lariocht-Olua (Anubin country) treaty, there was an exchange of gifts. The Anubins gave the fountain as a gift, the gift they received in return is known of mostly just in rumors.

Grettir looks at Aiden "You might be right but we are faced with the problem of finding lodgings here"

He then looks around trying to find a tavern or just any place where they could sleep tonight.

Cáel (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=208356)

"I haven't been to a town like this in many years. If it's like I recall, remember that the bars are likely made out of copper, and bend inwards more easily."

With that, he runs a practiced eye over the surroundings, looking for the most pronounced smith's.

There are no inns in the immediate vicinity, but you remember passing a few on the way in.

Aiden figures that is a round about way of saying Grettir wants to down a few drinks, and he's about to say something about how food supplies are easier to pick up anywhere but the city, but he stops himself at the first word: "Aren't...". With a look of embarrassment, he gets back to scanning the streets and buildings around him, looking for signs of danger or for someone he knows. He's still visibly uncomfortable here, but his body language indicates a willingness to follow Grettir to whatever inn or tavern he picks.

Abruptly, there is a good deal of commotion from the north-east corner of the marketplace. The crowd spreads, then tightens, forming a circle around some kind of commotion, a large one, that often recedes quite violently. Nearby guard immediately head towards the commotion, but have a great deal of difficulty moving through the crowds.

Grettir hands Cáel his backpack "Hold this I'm going to see what's going on" and starts pushing through the crowd trying to see anything.

(if Cáel does not take the pack he'll just drop it on the ground)

Cáel

Shouldering Grettir's pack, and securing it atop his own, Cáel attempts to bull his way through the throng, trusting the others to stay close enough behind him to keep up.

Already skittish, the crowd crumples away before Cael and Grettir's assaults, leaving them free to enter the circle wherein they find two men, one sporting captain's stripes on his shoulders, back to back, surrounded by several other men.

What is happening here? Are they being attacked?

Since the others seem not to be in a position to answer, Aiden figures he has to say something to Warrick:

"Not yet. Might be in a second though, and there are more of them than us. Lets move to where we can see better." Saying this, he tries to get behind the other two, 10 feet behind or so, or at least within 20 feet or so if he'd need to push through the crowd to get closer. Aiden was already out of his element here, and the apparent confrontation is making him even more visibly nervous. As it is, he tries to calm himself by mentally going through what minor magics he might use if the situation looks to be getting out of hand.

Despite seeing the dagger, Grettir receives a deep gash as the man turns and slices him across the chest. Although he has little time to react, he notices, as does Cael, that two men have already been felled, one is dead, his torso hewn from shoulder to hip, the other may still be alive, but there is a pool of blood around his head. The remaining eleven men, not including the defenders, are all weilding various weapons.

Everyone should roll initiative. Warrick and Aiden are both unable to see what's going on, but they will still act during their turn. Grettir has taken 6 damage.

Aiden doesn't know what is going on, but he wants it to stop, and he wants the crowd to get out of his way. As a bonus, he hopes that if the crowd thins a little, the guards will be able to deal with the situation without him having to do much. Warrick should be close enough to hear him muttering irritatedly about the crowd: "Far too many people here."

So, he casts Ghost Sound to produce the sound (caster level 3, so equivalent to the noise of 12 humans, 3 round duration) of cavalry coming from behind him, and getting closer.

Then, if possible, he'll move closer (so long as he doesn't need a strength check).

Cáel

Seeing his friend cut wantonly, Cáel strikes out without thought, trying at the last second to check the blow so as not to kill the man under his heavy hammer.

[roll0] -4 If I can make it nonlethal halfway through striking the blow.

As the urge to avoid killing the man spoils his blow, Cáel will keep swinging until the attacker is subdued. After that he'll pause, hammer in hands, ready to defend his and himself.

The man gets in a solid slice down the side of Grettir's face before Grettir's axe collides solidly with the man's side, dropping him to the ground. Cael's simultaneous attack fails to hit as the man is moved visibly by Grettir's blow. Two more of the men move towards Cael and Grettir, as the two men in the middle stave off further attacks, and fell another themselves.

Meanwhile, the crowd begins to move away from the horsemen sounds momentarily, only to stop in confusion at the lack of any visible horses. A few of them start to run in fear and although a couple guards are within distance of the gap in the crowd, they too seem apprehensive of entering it.

Grettir takes another 6 damage.

Grettir looks at the two men approaching him and Cael and says "Stop this, lay down your weapons and no more need to die" he then prepares to defend himself if they do not surrender

If possible he will ready an action to attack them if they move in range.
If they move in range before he can ready the action he will attack the one that seems stronger

Hefting his hammer menacingly, Cáel's arm lends credance to Grettir's threat. Spinning the haft, so the head whirls, he tenses himself to strike down the next one to step forward in violence.

Aiden is just plain irritated by the whole fight, but he approves of the way his companions are trying to stop this nonsense. So, he'll throw in the usual druid standby for abruptly avoiding a confrontation in progress: a sleep spell (DC 14), aiming to avoid his companions and non-combatants. Ideally he'll just put the point of origin so that four of the people fighting his companions are the closest to it, but who knows where people will be by the time the spell finishes?

Ignoring Grettir, the two men move in and attack. The first one's attack is easily parried, but while Grettir does that, the second man scores a blow with his longsword. The pain is insufficient to deter Grettir's counter attack against the first man however, and he lands a solid blow to the first man. Cael misses yet again, though he seems to be splitting the enemies' attention.

Grettir and Cael are a bit shocked when the second man abruptly falls asleep.

Meanwhile, the unranked man recieves a spear blow to his leg that drops him to one knee, while he and his companion both fell another enemy each. Someone near Grettir and Cael looks at them during this as if just noticing them, Don't ya know no better'n to get involved in the Royal Fian's business?

ooc: I don't have anything from Warrick.
Grettir has taken another 6 damage (at least this time it was from a d8, and not a d6.
