Art of WAR

War? HUH! What is it good for? Drawings!
Conflict and struggle, for sport or dominance, survival or blood lust, lets see it in stick form. All war is up for grabs, any era, any combatant, or a mix of both. Everybody was kung fu fighting!

Remember: All artwork must be your own. Do not take, alter, or use any of the The Giant's art. Thanks.

Categories
There will be a First through Third place award for each of the following:

Best Warrior (any avatar-sized character)
Best OotS Warrior (any avatar sized, Order of the Stick/D&D based submission)
Best Opponents (any two beings locked in combat)
Best Battle Scene (anything larger than the above)
Best Rookie Entry (if this is your first contest all your entries automatically fall under this category, along with the main category)
And, as always, the Best Overall award.

I'll also voice my opinion on which entry is the most kick-awesome in the form of a VT's Choice Award, which may be anything that tickles my fancy or was shamelessly tailored to my tastes (I approve of shamelessessness).

Rules
1. Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you are trying to enter in.

2. Every entry must include an itallic introduction as to what your entry is.

Ok, been messaging a few, but for those of you who are planning to submit, a Warrior is not just an adventurer that just happens to be wielding a weapon, a monster, or someone making a face.

I didn't want to draw that line, but unless I do any drawing is being submitted as 'a warrior'. The glow of enlightenment becomes an aura of holy smiting. A kiss becomes blood sucking. A hand raised in greeting a fist raised in victory. A bratty kid scowling can kill with his gaze.

If it wasn't intended originally as a warrior or engaged in combat, it doesn't become so by entering it here. Now, if you like, feel free to alter it slightly to make it so. I have absolutely no problem with that.

Hope I'm not taking too much fun out of this, but we needed parameters.

Ya know, for me it isn't about winning. It is about entering and getting people to notice something interesting I have done. If you turn back you clock to the Fine Art competition, that is the first Iron Avatarist I really got into. During that one, I unleashed what I thought was the masterpiece to end all master pieces (a small bit is used in my signature). There was a huge number of positive comments - Judges had things like: that is amazing!. Did it win? Nope, didn't even make the top 3 in its event - some very talented people unleashed some really amazing stuff. Did I mind. Nope. That competition is still the highlight of my Iron Avatarist career, not because of any categories I won, but because of how people fed off of each other's progress and realy cranked up the competition. When I submitted my piece, I am pretty sure I had the thing won, no problem... but that just pushed other people to try a bit harder and it REALLY allowed people to create some great stuff. Everytime I submit, I am hoping that it will trigger a similar effect; because winning is ok, but seeing someone pull something way cool out of their hat is awsome. So, Don't give up. Just submit what you got. Tweek the style a little if you need to. Look and polish doesn't always trump content. Now, I do have one more thing in mind for this one that I am surprised noone has submitted yet, we will see if I can get it produced in time.


And to be honest, I don't think I have necessarily submitted the best avatar in this competition. Sure I have a couple of mine I am partial to, but there is a lot of good work going on.

HHmmmm, looking at this, I think I might actually have an artist's personality (I am a programmer by trade).

If they are races/creatures/classes etc from D&D they go in there. If it's just medieval I leave it up to you. You decide which you prefer it to be in.

I, for one, am discouraged.

I appreciate the idea of competition and doing more because of the great art here, but I can't even contribute to that, so...

If they are races/creatures/classes etc from D&D they go in there. If it's just medieval I leave it up to you. You decide which you prefer it to be in.Oh... Personally I prefer "Best Oots" to be limited to things involving characters and/or creatures specifically from the comic. Eh, up to you *shrug*

The people complaining about how "there's no point entering now" or somesuch: We have been very worried about rates of entries lately. Back in the day, contests could reach 6 pages or more. More recently, we're lucky to get to 3. So when people start saying "well why should I enter? It's not like I'm gonna win..." I just about want to cry.
This contest is meant to be about fun, creativity, and both exercising and displaying one's skills. The prizes are nothing but a motivator. So qwitcherbitchin and start illustratin!

Qwernt: The Fine Art contest was amazing. Definitely worth a perusal, anyone who missed it.

Felix is from the Golden Sun games, and Toph is from the Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon. Toph's hair was insanely more easy than I thought, although my curse of always missing something seems to have struck again (the yellow/beige part of Toph's headband, this time).

I also made an icon for myself out of this, since I worked more-or-less left to right and without Toph it really did look like a crit fail.

Yes. I suppose it was a bit hard to see, but that was the intention.

(Probably need to redo the entry, though I can't really figure out a way to make the explosives more visible without changing her red dress).

The Crabship (or a prototype, anyway) was mine, with the crabapple (a pun) was my entry for (I believe) IA: Animate Inanimates. The dude in the water was one of Szilard's entrees, CrabMan. The little crabs are nobodies, except the green fiddler. He's Inner Animal Week Fullbladder, as originally done by Mr Saturn.

I scoured this forum for quite a bit to find the references for this stuff. Old Iron Avatarists, antique Avatar Battle Royale threads, age-old Avatar Week art threads....... The background's a bit rushed.

Actually, when I started this, I just wanted to make J and K. I did pretty good on them, too, so I saved them separately. The bug, well I got too lazy to try again. The background? The single reason this took so long. I started a background, hated it, scrapped it, sat on my hands for a week trying to decide what to do, decided 'screw it', made a crappy background.

Dammit I had planned to be posting Transformers by now.

That's where the Friendly Mathematician thing comes in. Shattered Glass is crazy backwards lands, see? Math Megs leads a guerilla band of research students, hippies, pacifist martial artists, and computer programmers against Purple Prime and his army of off-colour Autobots.

Optimus Primal, on the other hand, actively turns into a gorilla.

I have also removed a particular peice to re-build it to proper working specs. I have a plan, now, my mind came ablaze as I hauled water back and forth this afternoon at work, and the only obstactle is procrastination and Monster Hunter Tri.

For purely selfish reasons, I'm agin' that. The formatting for the Hall of Fame is already fiddly and time-consuming. Having to get rid of the URLs would make it that much harder. Although on the other hand, it could also save on having to scroll through the contest to find the right image... Hmmm...
If the entries are put with the prizes at the end of the contest, I would start nagging to have the formatting just so, for the same reasons.

Well, my 1680x1024 screen rarely stretches. It was annoying though when a whole page stretched on my 1024x768 because of one post. Not when it stretched a bit, but when I had to scroll to read a whole line of text. (i.e. someone posted an image more than ~1000 pixels).
