Because I like aberrations. Deal with it.

The resultant creature, the Mistwalker (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8570898&postcount=134), has been posted. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Hmm. I'll go with medium, I guess, a pc race that's smaller than Small is kind of overpowered for spellcasters if it doesn't have an LA. Too bad... I really would've liked to see a powerful aberration- there aren't any aberrations above level 10 in the SRD (besides the aboleth mage, which is just a tenth-level wizard).

I vote tiny. If all the people that wanted swarms would actually vote for one of those sizes, we'd have a swarm by now :smallconfused:

The problem is that there seems to be a split between people wanting a swarm and a playable race, and a playable swarm would be really tough, since it can't use any equipment and all, so it looks like playable is winning.

Although now I'm tempted to try...

Jack of Spades

I detect a compromise!
We make an aberrant version of the 4e Lamia: A swarm that converges into the form of a single Medium (and therefore more easily playable) creature.

That way, everyone wins

Yeah, the whole definition of them is that they think different from us, so what is good from there perspective? So if they want to help it could easily be like this; wanting to save a fish but instead of throwing it back in the water it changes the fish so it can live on land because they thought the fish was out of the water because it wanted to?

Bad example, but you get the gist. Lawful Aberrations are, however stupid it may be, impossible from our perspective. At least how they are defined in the book. That is... with the limits provided here. Seeing as there's not much room for weird abilities and a weird anatomy as a player race has its limits.

I know the majority is saying four, but I'm going to say 2 because even without stat adjustments, 2 really good abilities would be simpler and probably more constructive then more bad abilities.

As far as recomending an ability type, I want him to do something where if he gets struck by cold damage, he deals more damage himself with his attacks. (Possibly making it cold damage) A bluemage like effect.

Psionics is ofcourse a must. Psionics was underappreciated in 3.5...

Mistwalkers are tundra-dwelling aberrations that can create clouds of mist to hide their presence. They normally live in nomadic tribal groups far from civilization. To a mistwalker, non-mistwalkers are under constant suspicion, and they do their best to prevent such creatures from recognizing any mistwalker presence. Mistwalkers encountered outside their homeland are usually searching for something for the benefit of their tribe.

The mistwalker presented above had the following ability scores before racial adjustments: Str 13, Dex 12, Con 10, Int 11, Wis 9, Cha 8.

Mistwalker Racial ability score adjustments: Str +0, Dex +0, Con -2, Int +0, Wis +0, Cha +0.

Mistwalkers possess the following traits:

Delicate (Ex)
Mistwalkers are fragile, light creatures. They take a -2 penalty to constitution, and they are treated as one size category smaller when subject to high winds. When subjected to high temperatures, the effects are increased by 50%. Unlike most creatures with the Air subtype, mistwalkers cannot fly.

Mistvision (Ex)
To a mistwalker, any natural or magical mist(such as a fog cloud spell) appears to be emitting light as bright as a torch. The mistwalker can see by this light, and can see through all mist unhindered. Additionally, a mistwalker's body constantly emits a shroud of mist which is affected by this effect. This mist has no other effect, and the mistwalker can suppress the mist as a free action.

Mistwalk (Su)
At any time, without using an action, Mistwalkers may treat mist that grants concealment as if it were solid ground. To a mistwalker using this ability, the edges of mist are treated as difficult terrain, and the interior of a cloud of mist has a climb dc of 15. If the mist is moving, the mistwalker may allow itself to be carried along with it, whether it is within the cloud or upon it. The mist that a mistwalker's body emits is not substantial enough for this ability.

Rolling Mist (Sp)
As a standard action 3 times per day, a mistwalker may create a 15 foot cube of mist within 30 feet that lasts for ten minutes. This cloud hinders sight. A creature within, or on the opposite side of the cloud has concealment (attacks have a 20% miss chance). A creature within or on the opposite side of the cloud has total concealment against creatures more than 150 feet away. A moderate wind (11+ mph) disperses the mist in 4 rounds; a strong wind (21+ mph) disperses the mist in 1 round. The cloud of mist moves 5 feet per round in the direction the mistwalker specifies when creating the cloud.

Aberration Traits: An aberration possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry).
Darkvision out to 60 feet.
Proficient with its natural weapons. If generally humanoid in form, proficient with all simple weapons and any weapon it is described as using.
Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Aberrations not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Aberrations are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor.
Aberrations eat, sleep, and breathe.
Air Traits
This subtype usually is used for elementals and outsiders with a connection to the Elemental Plane Air. Air creatures always have fly speeds (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry) and usually have perfect maneuverability.

Cold Traits
A creature with the cold subtype has immunity to cold. It has vulnerability to fire, which means it takes half again as much (+50%) damage as normal from fire, regardless of whether a saving throw is allowed, or if the save is a success or failure.

Mistwalker Lore: DC 11: Mistwalkers are aberrations of the frozen tundra who can conjure clouds of rolling mist. This reveals all aberration, cold, and air traits.
DC 16: Mistwalkers can ride in a cloud of mist and treat it as solid ground.
DC 21: Mistwalkers' sight is actually assisted by the presence of mist.

Looks good. I'd suggest noting it can't fly though due to the traits it has from the Air subtype. Also, would the ability modifiers be Str +0, Dex +0, Con -2, Int +0, Wis +0, Cha +0? Just wanted to check.

Or, on the other hand, that it CAN fly.

Um, I don't think there are any LA+0 races that can fly at first level so if it can fly it should be modeled after the raptoran or dragonborn wings aspect.

It now notes that mistwalkers can't fly.

You mention that it constantly emits mist, are there any game-effects that it causes?

Well, it can see in the dark from it due to mist vision. That said though, how large of an area does this mist cover. Also, does the mist allow those outside some kind of spot check or the like to determine where the mistwalker is as it would be originating from it?

It seems like being able to create fog would be cause for an increase in LA, but that's just me.

Fixed up the personal mist and clarified racial ability score adjustments.

Would giving additional uses of the Roiling Mist ability as he gains more levels be to much? He gets a -2 Con after all.
