So yeah. I'm in my first apartment. Rather, I'm subletting from a friend until August, when I go to my true first apartment! But like...yeah! I'm on my own (minus the two housemates)! I...like...have to buy groceries with money I don't have from the job I don't have! Yeah...! -brokenhearted mildly enthusiastic sigh-

Well, I have housemates. Which is okayish. The one guy who's here now is really chill, no idea about the other guy - he won't be here til the first.

First meal on my own: Freezer Ravioli and Freezer Chimichangas. Surely this bodes well for the rest of my life.

EDIT: I am not, however, used to all the sounds of the house/city. Every tinkle of glass, every sound of the doorknob putting itself back to neutral position...freaks me out.

Congratulations with getting your own place, sort of :smallamused:

It'll grow on you fast enough, that's for sure. There's a first time for everything and a lot of those are going to come your way now.

First time to cook, you've had that, although freezer food doesn't really count as really cooking.
First time to clean the bathroom, always one to look forward to.
First time to have a party at your place.
First sleepless night and finding out your roommates can't sleep either.

First girl who comes home with you, to YOUR PLACE.

Good times, good times.

Enjoy them, I did :smalltongue:

Note that you can make cheaper (and better) food from scratch. Avoid everything prepared, pre-cooked, microwavable, etc. Rice, lentils, beans, and potatoes are all good staples. If money is at all tight, you should seriously consider this. It won't be as good at first, but you'll learn to cook well.

For instance, last night I had fried Tofu ~$0.50, Pasta ~$0.50, some tomato sauce (??) and asparagus ~$1.00 (from memory), all from an expensive grocery in a wealthy neighborhood (I was on foot in a strange city; didn't have much choice). If I'd had time to establish a routine, I'd have probably found somewhere cheaper to buy.

Numbered for my convenience.

1, we've established, has already happened, but to be fair I cooked a lot at home too. 2 will be happening shortly, since apparently the friends I'm renting from didn't realize that the black mold on the inside of the shower curtain ISN'T healthy. 3 will have to wait until I truly get my own place, which will be August 1st. 5 may or may not have happened last night, and it may or may not have had awesome results.

You speak nothing but truths. I just popped by the Kroger yesterday to get some prepackaged crap because I literally had nothing to eat. That I knew of anyway. My friends left me as follows: a single egg, half a loaf of bread, milk that expired yesterday (so I got two uses out of it), a few beers, frozen chicken breasts, frozen onions, frozen peppers and onions, and frozen broccoli. They also fail at having good cooking gear. :smallannoyed: I wanted to make chilli. Which requires a large pot. What do I lack? A large pot. Well...and anything to make the chilli with, but that's beside the point. They also lack a pitcher, which means no iced tea for me so as to reduce costs on soda consumption... no big flat pans mean no quesodillas...although after rummaging around last night, I did locate some lentils and some spaghetti, so all hope is not lost.

The other issue is that I'm really afraid to eat anything that hasn't been explicitly approved by my roommate, since I don't want to eat his shtuff. I can always get him more, but it's the principle of the thing, y'know?

Congrats, I'm officially in my first flat now too (got fed up of housemates).

As for food fears talk to your housemates about things like bread and milk sharing, it gets silly having 3 separate bottles of milk in the fridge at the same time.

Also buy in bulk, make a lot all at once then freeze it. Saves money and gives the convenience of ready meals whilst being healthy and couting as home cooked.

me and my roommates shared everything, we would pool our money (20$ each) so we had 100$ for food and we'd go to the store and buy food with it. anything left over would be saved for the next time we went grocery shopping. We also shared the pots and pans, cups, glasses, basically anything kitchen related.

in hindsight that last part wasn't an amazing idea since after we all left i got some of their stuff, they got some of my stuff, etc...but we're slowly getting it all back together.

I had mostly that in my first year at uni. Last year however was hell; the guy would eat anything in the cupboards and fridge, then claim he hadn't (sometimes whilst eating it) and then threaten to kick the crap out of me if I said anything about it.

As long as DM's housemates are sane though it's a good idea, works especiall well with toilet paper.

well there was four people per apartment at my college and we were pretty good to each other. There was only one roommate that i had REAL problems with(we had 3 different roommates through my entire duration there) and that's just because he wouldn't pay for anything and the thing that annoyed me the most was him singing LOUDLY at 2AM while i was trying to sleep, on the bright side he was a good singer

Each bedroom has 2 beds and a bath and of course i'd get stuck with him.

Get off yer fanny and go play Metroid. :smalltongue:

Also, making food is good so you don't starve. Starvation=bad. Just an FYI.

YOU'RE A FANNY.

And I tried playing Metroid. I forgot I got to a part I have no idea what to do, and am too unmotivated to look up a guide for it. And food is for the weak anyway. :P

Take up alcoholism and substance abuse. Then you'll always have something to do.*

Alternatively I recommend lists. If you organise stuff you feel like you have to do it.

*Do NOT do this.

Aw.

True, I suppose. Not a lot to organize though...I mean, I know I have to go to the gym tomorrow, and maybe the grocery store again to pick up cookable storable foodstuffs...

Seemed to be my problem too. So after a year and a half i came home to do the rest of my degree online...Parental ass kicking makes good motivation.

Well, Over the summer I live with my dad, and that's like being on my own, so the best thing I could tell you to do to get over boredom is to go do things you usually aren't aloud to do. Here, I made a list for you*
Don't sleep, use energy drinks and caffeine pills if needed
Download whatever you want to your computer
Watch porn :P
Drive!

*Is just the list I use

also driving is a waste of gas...

Usually, but my mom doesn't let me download ANYTHING, so I download free trials of all sorts of games and music
And I'm not aloud to drive unless I'm at my dad's house. I have my license and everything! I hate my mom :(

Hate's a strong word. How could you hate the being who willed you into existance?
