NeverEnding DM
2010-05-22, 06:15 AM
The air surrounding you fairly hums with the residue of magic, an aftereffect of the spell that brought you to this place. A quick glance reveals that you are in a small room, devoid of any life save for yourself. The sound of dripping water can be heard faintly, and the stone walls are slick with moisture. In complete defiance of logic, a torch is already lit, resting in a sconce near the room's single door.

There is a door at C-4, south side.

I drop the quarterstaffs, leaving me at light load.
I invoke Magic Insight. (Gives me Detect Magic, and can end for a free Identify) (5% arcane failure, but I've it at-will...
[roll0]1 fails
[roll1]1 fails)

I take 10 to search the whole room. (Modifier +9 for 19).

I snuff out the torch.

If no trap detected, I open the door.

Travel procedures:
I ignore doors ATM.
I take 10 search for a total of 19
I poke floor tiles at max range with my 11ft pole (with my weight)
I dangle my guisarme 5' in front of me loosely to detect trip wires.
Anything interesting, I take 20 search for a total of 29.
I don't touch anything with my bare hands. I've gloves. Also don't touch anything without me saying so.
I evade ground traps with take 10 jump for 23.

I should be able to scout the whole place. Can I get a map?

EDIT: Dark/Low-light vision 60'. Sees magic aura. I spend 3 rounds on Detect Magic if anything pings.

Thelas
2010-05-22, 06:37 AM
Gah.
Hold on while I print out the map and go over it with a pencil, this will take a while.
[Just a note to not expect the post soon].

Oh, what's your movement order slash turning algorithm?

2xMachina
2010-05-22, 06:41 AM
Sorry if I gave you a lot of work.

I follow the left wall.

BTW, can I take 10 on spellcraft? Not threatened.

Total, spellcraft 16 to determine school on my Detect magic.

Thelas
2010-05-22, 06:42 AM
What's the end condition? Do you want me to stop if you take any amount of damage whatsoever, or keep going until the entire area is mapped?

2xMachina
2010-05-22, 06:44 AM
Tell me if something happens.

Don't post the map until I've mapped the whole place. (Can you tell if I'm redoing the same area though?)

Thelas
2010-05-22, 06:49 AM
Sure, here we go.
You open the door, and move 10 ft to the east and detect a pit trap with the poking, falling out as you open it [10 ft to the east].
You also detect a strong magical aura which you spellcraft as being Acid Splash, CL 20, 30 feet to the east.

Any change in procedures?

2xMachina
2010-05-22, 06:55 AM
Huh, I guess there's nothing I can do about the acid splash trap... My disable device is not good enough to do anything about it...

Thelas
2010-05-22, 06:56 AM
So continue with SOP of poking stuff with poles and such?

2xMachina
2010-05-22, 07:05 AM
I've half a mind to rush it in case it's a timed trap (the other trap types, not avoidable at all).

Ok, you know what? I'll rush it. 11'ft pole pressed to the floor with my weight, and I'll push it along with walking speed (no running, low AC bad).

I'll try to get through it as fast as possible with my 40' speed.

Can I take 10 search along the way without losing speed? If I can't, I don't.

I do this within 20'ft of acid traps.

Thelas
2010-05-22, 07:10 AM
I should probably clarify. Following the left wall, you won't go in the direction of the acid splash trap, you'll turn north and continue there.
Still doing that?

2xMachina
2010-05-22, 07:13 AM
Oh right.

I thought the acid trap was in my way...

I go standard left wall, using the procedures I mentioned if there's a acid trap in my way. (Start at 20'ft away, and stop at 20'ft away). Change to normal procedure if I get hit by any acid splash traps.

Thelas
2010-05-22, 08:23 AM
From the tile where you detected the pit trap and the acid trap, you turn north and go 20 ft, then east and go 10 ft, then north for 10 ft, then west for 30 ft, then north 10 ft, detect a pit, north 5, jump the pit, north 5 more, east 20, south 10, pass by a door, west 10, detect an acid trap, dash through it, take [roll0] acid the moment that your pole touches the trap, south 10, and you're NOT stuck in a loop if you keep following left, I'm just being stupid. Same procedure?

2xMachina
2010-05-22, 08:35 AM
Go back to first procedure, except I don't poke the acid splash tile anymore.

Keep exploring, don't repeat areas if not needed.

EDIT: BTW, don't your acid splash need a range touch attack roll? AC 10

Thelas
2010-05-22, 09:07 AM
Hm, I don't see that listed in the description in the DM file, lessee here.
No, the trap's been magically enhanced to auto-hit, it looks like.

Okay, from where we were.
20 ft east, discover pit, it falls out, 5 east, jump pit, 5 east, 10 north, skip door, 10 east, and you see a large red note card hanging from the wall on your square. Read it?

2xMachina
2010-05-22, 09:20 AM
Take 20 or a total of 29 for search.

If nothing, I read it without touching it if I can.

Does Explosive runes ping as magic? Anyway, search 29 should find it anyway.

Thelas
2010-05-22, 09:42 AM
Correct guess. It was tanaric's miniature explosive runes that I misread as having an anti-detection spell on it because I'm stupid like that.

So let's see here, north 30 ft, west 20 ft, north 20 ft and you see a non-magical green notecard. read it?

2xMachina
2010-05-22, 10:52 AM
Take 20: Search 29 again.

If nothing, read it. Not touching it in any case.

Thelas
2010-05-22, 11:15 AM
It says “You've Been Poisoned. Have Fun.”

That'll be a Fort save, please.

2xMachina
2010-05-22, 11:27 AM
Search 29 doesn't find the trap?

And it's a sight based poison?

[roll0]

Using 1 Inspiration Point for a +5.

EDIT: Wow, Nat 1.

term1nally s1ck
2010-05-22, 12:11 PM
Thelas:
Thelas only:LOL. Roll a d100 every time he attacks, just for further paranoia.

EDIT: There *are* inhaled poisons...

Thelas
2010-05-22, 03:46 PM
I assume standard operating procedures?

If so:

North 20 ft, east 20 ft, north 10 ft, west 10 ft, north 20 ft, pass by two doors, north another 20 ft, east 10 ft, north 10 ft, west 20 ft, south 20 ft, west 15 ft, detect a pit, it falls away, west 5 ft, jump it, north 10 ft, west 10 ft, south 20 ft, east 30 ft (passing by another door), and one square to the south of you you see a large red and white bulls eye painted on the floor.

What now?

2xMachina
2010-05-22, 03:49 PM
Nothing happens? Weird.

SOP: Yup.

Take 20 search for 29. Jump it in any case. (Take 10 for 23)

Thelas
2010-05-22, 03:53 PM
You find nothing, nothing triggers, but there is a door I may have forgotten to describe right next to the bullseye, so you'll probably be coming back here later.

After you land, you detect an acid trap which as per directions you don't poke with the pole and thus evade (move 25 ft south onto the trap's tile, and then continue immediately another 35 ft south, your guisarme cutting through a tripwire (good plan, that), then 5 ft south, 30 ft west, detect an acid trap, head 15 ft north onto its tile and don't have to deal with, then 20 ft north, pass a door, 5 ft north, another door to the north and a bulls-eye to your right.
Same as before? Do you want to add the bullseye procedure to standard operating procedures?

Thelas
2010-05-22, 03:55 PM
Oh, right.
Also:
[roll0].

2xMachina
2010-05-22, 04:04 PM
Umm, bullseye... Yeah.

Hmm, I've half a mind to try salvaging the pieces trip wire trap and selling it... Should have some attack mechanism or something. Well, I'll come back to that later.

And what's the roll for?

Thelas
2010-05-22, 04:11 PM
And what's the roll for?

The roll was for There is no roll citizen, please go back to your fun.

Search, find nothing, jump over bulls-eye, head 10 ft east, come to dead end with door.
Well, that took long enough... now for you to have to give me a backtracking algorithm to cover the rest of the map, if you're not going in the door.

2xMachina
2010-05-23, 03:15 AM
Hmm, special door, but I don't think I'll go in just yet. *I'll come back right after I finish exploring the place. Should be the exit*

Turn around and follow the left wall (it's the other wall now. Still left, but opposite). Should get me the whole edge of the map.

Might need to separately search the center though...

Thelas
2010-05-23, 10:40 AM
Okay, you jump back over the bulls-eye, head 40 ft south, 30 ft east, 20 ft north, 10 ft west, 15 ft north, pass by a door, 5 ft north and get to another dead end with a door.
Let's assume you turn around and continue following left:
20 ft south, 10 ft east, 50 ft north (jumping a bulls-eye), 30 ft west, [roll0], 30 ft north, 25 ft east, 20 t south, 25 ft east 20 ft north, 20 ft east, 10 ft south, 10 ft west, 40 ft south, 10 ft left, detect and jump a pit to the north, 20 ft east, 10 ft north, pass by a door, 20 ft north, 10 ft west, 10 ft north, 40 ft east, 10 ft south, pass by a door, 5 ft east, and there's a door 5 ft to your east, but the only way to reach it is by stepping on a bulls-eye.
What next?

2xMachina
2010-05-23, 10:50 AM
Take 20 search for 29, then step on it if nothing.

How much of the map have I left to search?

Thelas
2010-05-23, 10:53 AM
I can't tell you how much map is left, but you have seen at least one path you still haven't taken, and you find nothing and nothing happens when you step on it.
[roll0]

2xMachina
2010-05-23, 11:03 AM
:smalleek: Nat 1 on 1d200 lol.

So, I continue exploring? And if I end up going back to where I start, I start exploring where I've not been to.

Thelas
2010-05-23, 11:04 AM
What specifically are you doing if you find yourself in an infinite loop?

2xMachina
2010-05-23, 11:10 AM
I expect that I'll end up back in front of the room I'm from. Can we assume that the door is left open (never did say I close it anyway)?

When I do get there, either I request a map, and I'll go where I've not been, or you can assume my Kobold knows the map and heads off to unexplored areas. (2nd would be less work).

EDIT: BTW, are my search checks used on walls too? Cause I'd be interested in knowing if there's secret doors/rooms.

Thelas
2010-05-23, 02:43 PM
I'll let you know if you find anything.
Before we continue, however, I need another Fort save.

2xMachina
2010-05-23, 02:47 PM
I assume that's for the poison I had?

[roll0].

Inspiration point, +5. (They reset with encounters right?)

Huh, forgot a ]. Deleted and reposted correctly

*there was no roll in the deleted post*

*EDIT: Would have been funny (in a sad way), if I got another Nat 1 on my +11 roll.

Thelas
2010-05-23, 02:58 PM
Turn around and keep going: 10 ft west, 10 ft north, 45 ft west, 10 ft south, 20 ft east, 30 ft south, 30 ft west, jump a pit to the south, detect a pit to the east and jump it, 10 ft east, dash by an acid trap 10 ft to your south, after the trap's tile head 15 ft south, pass a door, another 25 ft south, 20 ft west, 10 ft south, 20 ft east, jump a bull's-eye in front of a door, 10 ft south, pass a door, 10 ft east, 20 ft north, 10 ft west (cutting another tripwire as you go), 5 ft north, detect a pit, 5 ft north, jump it, 10 ft north, pass a door, 5 ft north, detect a pit, 5 ft north, jump it, 45 ft east, another 20 ft east (don't know why I did that), 25 ft south, detect a pit, 5 ft south, jump it, 15 ft south, 10 ft west, 20 ft north, detect an acid trap 20 ft west, dash through it, from its tile 10 ft west, 30 ft south, 5 ft east, and then backtrack 15 ft west, 10 ft south, 10 ft west, 20 ft south, detect acid trap 10 ft to the right, dash by it, from its tile you head 20 ft east, [roll0] [roll1], 10 ft north, 30 ft east, 20 ft north, 15 ft west, dead end with a door, turn around, 15 ft east, 20 ft south, 30 ft west, 10 ft south, 30 ft east, 15 ft south, cut another tripwire, 20 ft south, and you're on the tile of a red notecard that pings magic.
What now?

2xMachina
2010-05-23, 03:02 PM
Didn't I already went through another red notecard?

Spend 3 rounds detect magic, Take 10 spellcraft for 16. I expect it's the same explosive runes...

Take 20: Search 29 also just in case.

*no longer dashing at acid traps BTW. Normal, except don't poke the trap

Thelas
2010-05-23, 03:05 PM
Yep, tanaric's miniature explosive runes.
Don't you just love them?

You continue 5 ft south further, then 30 ft west, detect a pit, 5 ft west, jump it, and 15 ft west, 10 ft north, pass a door, 20 ft west, 5 ft south, and a blue card (non-magical).

What now?

2xMachina
2010-05-23, 03:09 PM
Take 20 search for 29.

If nothing, read it without touching it. *wonders if peeking through my gloved fingers will stop sight-based poisons...*

BTW, the trip wire traps I cut through? Do you think my kobold remembers where they are?

Wanna dismantle them and sell them for parts later (when I find the vending machine)

EDIT: Wonders if notes with explosive runes sell... Gonna try stuffing it into the vending machine later. Along with anything in the dungeon that's not nailed down

Thelas
2010-05-23, 03:11 PM
It has no effect at the moment, but says "Burn me for help in times of trouble" in common.

Will you:
a) Kill it with fire?
b) Roll me a spot check, please.
c) Go on with SOP
d) Realize that D&D's not a gamebook and you don't need to deal with multiple choices? Though I do need a spot check.

2xMachina
2010-05-23, 03:12 PM
Take it. With gloves.

[roll0]

Flat roll here.

EDIT: Also, continue SOP.

Thelas
2010-05-23, 03:19 PM
kekeke...
Alright, shall we continue, mr. nice person who will not die horribly soon?

5 ft south, 5 ft west, pass a door, 15 ft west, 10 ft south, pass a door, 10 ft south, jump a bullseye to your west (that happens to be on a door's tile), 40 ft west, 10 ft south, pass an acid trap 10 ft to your east, 20 ft east, detect a pit are you even reading this jump the pit, detect an acid trap 10 ft to your east and pass through it, then 15 ft east, a door, 20 ft east, detect a pit trap, 5 ft east, jump it, 30 ft east, detect a pit trap, 5 ft east, jump it, 15 ft east, 20 ft north, 30 ft west, detect a pit trap 5 ft south, jump it, detect an acid trap 20 t west, move past it and then another 10 ft, 10 ft north, 5 ft west, dead end. Backtrack all the way to the square 35 ft to the east of the bullseye, detect an acid trap 5 ft north, pass it, then another 25 ft north, and at this point you realize you've nearly explored the entire area.

If you'd like AND your character has mapping supplies, I can get a map for you, though it will take some time.

TS

Can I get a map not including the exits to room 1, the secret doors, and the trap locations, please?

And a will save from you will be needed.

2xMachina
2010-05-23, 03:24 PM
I'm reading it.

I don't have mapping supplies... Oh well, I could try making 1 myself. Do I need to?

[roll0]

Insp. Point +5 again.

Thelas
2010-05-23, 03:26 PM
As far as I'm concerned, an encounter is only over once you get XP or sleep, unless I'm overruled.
Just a note.

If you want a map and don't have mapping supplies, yes, you'll want to make one yourself.

However, you could just go to random doors you haven't yet entered. I'll roll a die for room number out of the ones you can reach or something.

2xMachina
2010-05-23, 03:30 PM
k, I'll be more careful with my Insp. Points.

Hmm, well, I'll go make a map myself then (unless TS is kind enough to pop one in for me *puppy eyes*)

EDIT: Gonna go offline anyway.

You are aware room 1 is the white space, right?

2xMachina

Wait, isn't room 1 the room leading to the white space? I'd need to get through it to explore the white space?

Thelas
2010-05-24, 06:21 AM
Yes, that is correct.
Just confirming.
Here we go.

Opening the door reveals the following room:
{table]|A_|B_|C_|D_|E_

2|||||
3||||1|
4|||||

It runs up to you...
and grapples.

You do have the entire grapple rules memorized, don't you?
Good.

Well, as you know, you don't get an AoO since you're still flatfooted.
Melee flat-footed touch attack: [roll0]
If hit, grapple check: [roll1]
If pass, unarmed damage (lethal): [roll2]

TS

why didn't you list the unarmed damage on the sheet?
that would save quite a bit of time.

Would have to do escape artist otherwise. My grapple is low... (Small and all)

Breathe Entangling Breathe

Take Half of [roll0] fire damage.
Entangled for [roll1] rounds.
Take 1d6 fire damage per round during entangled. (You roll the damage I suppose?)

EDIT: Sorry, withdraw is a full round action, and I can't do that.

I 5' step back instead.

Hello, TS.
Thank you for the spell.
Just in case, though...

RNG, you see this giant cookie here?
You can have it if you start behaving.
You see this wizard here?

So would you prefer to have free will in all the other threads and not here or none at all?

Take [roll0] from entangle.

I've half a mind to retreat and let the entangle kill the bot.

I forgot to give you a reflex save, but half of 1 is still 1 (unless you've evasion).

Breathe again: [roll1] fire damage. DC 14 reflex halves.
*Insp. Point added. 1/2 left*

2010-05-24, 12:10 PM
On the other hand, I forgot something.

Please go ahead and retroactively do this now.

TS

roll me three fort saves please.
Which door? As you recall from the description, there were four doors, one where you entered (distances based on the first tile inside the room), one 10 ft south, one 15 ft east and 15 ft south, and one 20 ft east and 10 ft south.

Now what? :)

2xMachina
2010-05-24, 12:43 PM
Take 20 search for 29. If nothing, take 10 jump it for 23.

What do you mean? It's a loop?

Or did you take it that I used the door I came in from?

Cause I meant the 10 ft south door. (from roll1)

Thelas
2010-05-24, 12:46 PM
Well, you didn't say that.
You rolled a d4.
There were four doors, INCLUDING the one you came in.
Let's see here, then.
*grab map*

There are absolutely no traps.
You find an exit door.
You get a strange feeling.
Something about "try to get more XP before leaving or you WILL die."
All three doors connect to the same hallways.
These hallways connect to nothing else.
There is a vending machine in the exit room.
You may, for the remainder of this level, buy and sell items at book rate and half of book rate, respectively. Once you leave, though, you can't return to this level.

Have fun.

2xMachina
2010-05-24, 12:53 PM
Yay, exit. Now I can go buy potions if I'm hurt.

Yeah, I'm trying to go for 100% run on floor 1 if possible.

I go to the trip wire places, and try to scrap it.
I take the explosive runes note, and the poison note (gloves on) and stuff it in the vending machine to sell.
I move the torch/quarterstaff from my original room (room 12?) to here.

Also, if you ever need an absolutely terrifying homebrew poison, just take all the qualities 2xmachina has made up for the green paper.

I suppose the 2nd breathe I rolled isn't counted.

Do I have to count? Cause there's no way your 60' can catch my 80' double move. Even if taking diagonals, you'd only gain 5 to 10' at most.

And it's dang tedious to count the tiles.

f-1 goes to X8

I'm curious though, if there's any pits on the way? I'm far more likely to pass it though, with a +13 jump.

Then X8 to f-2 to Y8 to e-2 to Z8 to d-2 and so on...

Yeah, I know it's the normal speed. However, as I withdraw, I move double my speed, thus 80'. 60' can't catch it, unless double move, which means no standard action to attack.

Ad for traps, I've walked this hallways already, and should have triggered/dismantled them.

As for corner, yeah, sorry. Thought I could move diagonally. But it needs to move like that too, so it shouldn't matter so much.

I move into room 15, C6. (Unless I see it in the room)

Can I partially rebuild my char? Change Loredrake to Wyrm of War, award myself 90Gp from previous Bank Error NOT in my Favour. (Arena seems to use average gold not max gold, and NED OP links there for Char Gen...), change my Dragonborn aspect to Heart. (Mostly to maximize Wyrm of War use, since I get dragon feats, might as well open up metabreaths)(I didn't really benefit from the +10 jump so far. I could take 10 for 13 to jump all pit traps in floor 1)

(Hoping to cast Unseen Servant/Mage armor though, so I think I might miss the Loredrake before I dip get to dip Wizard).

If your character becomes illegal through no fault of your own, then you can re-build with the same gold/XP, and continue from the same place, or merely retrain it for free.

If you got your char banned, no such luck. (Unless I ran you to test it)

2xMachina
2010-05-30, 08:33 AM
The Loredrake thing isn't my fault right?

Mostly just changing to Wyrm of War. (Heh, might go wear a Tower Shield lol)
Maybe changing Wings to Heart (since I think I can just go Alter Self for fly speed). Heart is still kinda useless though, since all it does is open up metabreath feats (which I'm not sure I'd even take... but with extra Dragon feats, might as well take it)

Cast/End Magic Insight to Identify the scroll. Probably gonna sell, unless it's a healing or US or Mage armor or something like that.

Sard gem... is just a gem right?

Heh, overkill... (Won Init + hide thing)

Looks like I'll 1 shot them?
Half [roll0], reflex DC15 halves again.
Entangle for [roll1]

Do they even have loot?

EDIT: Huh, 1 damage... that shouldn't kill them. I find it likely my breath do 1 damage.
Oh well, entangle means they're unlikely to get to me.

Welcome back BTW.

Thelas

Is your breath a cone? If not, it shouldn't hit all three of them...

2xMachina
2010-06-21, 09:39 AM
Yeah, my breathe is a cone. I could also step in if I need to be closer to cover them all.

Entangle - does it hit the squirrels even if they're on the wall and if so, can they teleport out of the entangle?

term1nally s1ck
2010-06-21, 04:55 PM
Thelas: it hits, and no, they can't. One of the easiest ways to win this encounter.

However, they will drop a darkness before dying.

Thelas
2010-06-22, 11:12 AM
Okay, you hit them with your breath, they chitter in pain (you think, it's kinda hard to tell), and they drop an area of cold darkness over the room. Take [roll0] and give me a fort save.

They die before you can breathe.

Unfortunately for you, the room is still filled with darkness, so you can't see what loot came with your 150 XPs.

2xMachina
2010-06-22, 12:46 PM
Hmm, then I shall wait for the darkness to disappear.

Thelas
2010-06-22, 01:10 PM
How long are you willing to wait?

2xMachina
2010-06-22, 02:56 PM
Maybe an hour? (darkness spells shouldn't last all that long) I haven't been taking very long on the other parts anyway, so I've time.

Thelas
2010-06-22, 03:01 PM
Half an hour later, the darkness dissipates and you see a small dark nodule, about the size of a peach pit.

Where to?

2xMachina

It has 50' movement? And it doesn't attack? Does that mean double move?

Since it might be relevant...
It takes -2 penalty on all attack rolls and a -4 penalty to Dexterity.

Take [roll0] from entangle. 3 more rounds.

From what I see, it just means he can't make attacks against you, not that he can't use AoE on you - he has a cone breath too...

He'll move such that he's 30 ft from you and you take another [roll0] fire, Ref 15 half - plus, don't forget the [roll1] from entangle.
