View Full Version : Shyte : Townbuilder campaign - IC

Shyte, a small village, absent on most maps, barely mentioned on others. The kind of settlement where seasons succeed to each other with little to no unusual events to disturb the peace of the honest farmers.

It has been now 52 years that the noble House of Verrath administers the place, the lord looking after his subject, ruling over them with a soft hand typical of benevolent rulers. Some would even say "complaisant", as Shyte hasn't devellop much over the three generations of Verrath that have ruled it. But change is in the air.

Some of you are born here, others recently arrived. Yet, each of you is destined to alter the destiny of this small settlement. For the best or for the worst, this is yet to be seen. But in a world where stories of magic, monsters and heroes are more than fairy tales, anything is possible for whom is willing to try.

Founded some 60 years ago, near the ruins of an old keep known as Duskharrow, the village of Shyte is one of the few farming settlement of the region.

The population is mainly made up of peasants, working the fields for their own subsistence. There's little excess to be sold and money isn't used widely, wealth being expressed in livestock, fields, houses and such.

Although most peasants have some kind of skill beside their farming activities, there are a few dedicated specialists, like the blacksmith, [Imbasel], the alchemist, Nex Ortus and the innkeeper, Leticia Moran. The peasants themselves are divided between

those who run small family field (60%) and pay taxes based on the surface of their fields.
those who run large farms and can afford to hire workers (10%). They also pay taxes based on the surface of their fields.
those who lease their work in exchange for a steady pay and a cut of the harvest (30%). Those don't pay taxes. They couldn't do it, anyway...

Master Frank, an aged Hobbit farmer, is a respected figure among the halflings. A man of traditions, his wisdom is praised and he frequently assumes the role of spokesperson for his kin.

There's little trade between Shyte and the rest of the world, beside the occasional harvest surplus and the regular yet small import of manufactured goods from neighboring cities. However, what little trade there is attracted a young merchant, Mikiya O'Riley, along with two entertainers, Sarf Systel and Jim

The village is ruled by the House Verrath, whose ancestor earned nobility and land from the local Baron, more than 50 years ago. Since then, the village has known various fortunes and miseries but overall, it has been stagnant until the last five years. The current lord is on his late 40s and is about to pass the torch to his eldest son, Edmond, 19 years old. The other members of the family are Lady Verrath, the Lord's wife, and her two daughters, still in their teens.

The clergy of Wee Jas has been very active since the last plague, 20 years ago. A chapel has been built in the honor of the Stern Lady and has been run by Lucas Mort, an pious though not very charismatic adept, for 12 years. A new priestess, Rheara Starr, recently arrived, though.

Despite the popularity of the Ruby Sorceress, the old cult of nature is still strongly rooted in the people's traditions.

Shyte is mainly made up of small 1-room houses, although some of the more wealthy peasants and specialists can afford larger houses. The village has a Inn, the Roaming Knight, which is more of a tavern, given the rarity of visitors, a Forge, and a few other Shops and Workshops, although most of the peasants tend to do things themselves.

Mansion Verrath is located on the Northern edge of the Village. It serves as residence for the lord's family and their 5 servants, as well as barracks for the guards and as communal stable for visitors.

There's also a Windmill, a Sawmill and a Slaughterhouse, all property of the lord, who requires payment for their use

The village's security is the responsibility of Gillian. An old-timer of the Baron's armies, he's in command of a small troop of 4 guards, to which a various number of militiamen (currently 2) can be added.

The militia is used as a recruitment tool for the guards and the Baron's army. Enlistment is voluntary but you have to stick for 1 year. Candidates are gathered at the Baron's castle once a year and then dispatched to the various towns and villages, according to the local needs. The fittest militiamen are eventually offered a job in the guard or at the Baron's army.

The guard benefits from the recent arrival of Alaar Akatosh, servant of Heironeous. A gain for the safety of the villagers, a small loss for the local church's influence.

In addition, Relar, the son of the previous healer, has returned after a 9-years long journey. His warmongering speeches have found few followers for now but the village's spirit is slowly shifting toward a militaristic mindset.

Year 1, Spring

Winter is barely finished but already, life resumes.

Soon, the rye, sowed last Autumn, will soon have to be harvested.
The wheat is resuming growth, the beasts are let out of their sheds, preparation are made to sow the fields for legume.

Peasants are repairing their houses, assessing the damage caused by three months of snow, rain and frost. The winter has been hard, several people felt sick, some even died but many births were celebrated, too.

Sarf, the entertainer, yawns, and rises from his small bed after enjoying a good-night's sleep. He quickly dresses and makes the bed. Sarf then grabs his dagger from the table near his bed and attempts to conceal it in his body.

The lack of light in Nex's shack of a house was astounding. One would think that a house built from whatever wood the villagers could spare would leave many gaps and other places to let in the mornings glow, but even with their ramshackle building materials, these peasants were skilled.

He could hear banging at his door; who ever was knocking, they had come pretty close shaking his entire house. He could hear his bones popping as he stood up and began walking across the cold stone floors to the door.

To his surprise, the person knocking was but a child. "Have you no sense boy? It's too early for you to be banging on my door like that!" The look the child gave him immediately made him regret speaking so harshly. "I apologize, I was up late last night mixing ointments. What can I help you with?"

The boys face remained unchanged. "Mommy says we need help, daddy isn't breathing an' he's real cold."

Without a word Nex turned inside his home where he quickly put on a few coats, some boots, and grabbed his workbag which contained all manner of alchemical poultice, various surgical tools, and a white shawl to be thrown over the body when nothing could be done. "Run ahead and tell your mother I'm coming".

Sarf smiled as he walked through the early-dawn's cool new day. Deciding he was hungry, he quickly strode through the town towards The Roaming Night for an impromptu visit of Leticia and a breakfast. The sly rogue met the scowls of passing villagers he had out-gambled that winter with a whole-hearted grin, and stopped to smile at a couple of playing children. Sarf saw a frightened child run by, soon followed by the stern-faced Nex. Deciding he was too hungry to bug old Nexi, he continued on his journey to the inn.

Although the sun had been up for only a few hours, Relar was already hard at work preparing for the day ahead. He had already completed his quick morning meditation and he could feel the power of the forest and desert at his command. However he hoped that he would not have to use said powers and instead could convert that natural energy towards healing. Checking to make sure that he had his healing equipment, Relar grabbed his staff and began his rounds of the town. After all it was his duty to ensure that the townspeople remain healthy.

@Nanoblack :
On his way to the house of Master Jörgen, Nex can see that the village awaken slowly. Young children are running around, playing games, while their parents and elder siblings take care of the livestock before going to the fields.
As he crosses the center of the village, the all-too-familiar face of Sarf catches the alchemist's gaze. While the troublesome good-for-nothing trickster sees Nex too, he doesn't seem to care. Soon, the entertainer enters the Roaming Knight, the local Inn.

As the child leads you to his house, you are welcomed by the widow. The old woman is visibly deeply pained by her husband's death but she tries to hide her sorrow from her children.
-Master Ortus !! I fear that the Lady's hand has been at work in our house last night. Please, come this way. I pray it is Her doing and not the result of some fool illness.
As she speaks, she gives a worried look at the children, then lead Nex to the body.

@HypoSoc :
The Roaming Knight is a large building, larger than most houses of the village, thought not by much. The tavern, the kitchen and the cellar occupy the basement. Upstairs, two guest rooms, the Innkeeper's room... and that's it.
I let Tyrandar give you a detailed description of the Inn.

As Sarf enters the Inn, he can see that it's mainly empty : two old men, sitting near the hearth, discussing without drinking. While Sarf cannot remember their name, the stern look they give him as he enters is enough to confirm that they know him.
A third person, at least 7 feet tall, is sitting at the bar. From where he stands, Sarf can only see the back, where a large, heavy blade is hanging, along with a shortbow. A warrior, undoubtly. Wearing a yellowish studded leather armor on his clothes. He seems strong, yet agile, a pack of nervous muscles ready to burst. An attitude confirmed when he calls for the innkeeper :
"-So, what does it take to get a drink, here ?! Be on our way soon, better be fed and watered !!"

@Kojiro Kakita :
Besides a few colds, nothing serious to be noted.
The Bridgejumper family has two cases of influenza : the eldest son and one of the daughter. It's the kind of disease that can heal well but is contagious and can be deadly if left unattended, especially among children.
The 7 other members of the family seems healthy for now, though.
The father, Gerard Bridgejumper seems worried.
"-Ya father used to deal with this kind of crap. Never easy, 'specially for the fever. Always had that weird smelly soup. Hope ya know your trade, boy. I never asked but... where's ya father, now ? Would have thought he'd come back with ya."

@Tyrandar :

I let you give a detailed description of the Inn.
This morning, four customers :

The brothers Rasting and Bolok, two humans in their late fifties, both small farmers who passed their lands to their sons a few years ago. Since then, they spent most of their day at your Inn, drinking little but drinking nevertheless.
A group of strangers arrived yesterday. Three people, two of them clad like thugs, with weapons and armors, while the third one looked like a scholar. They rented both guest rooms. And they paid in gold. Two of them are still sleeping. The fourth, an half-orc female, is at the bar right now.
"-So, what does it take to get a drink, here ?! Be on our way soon, better be fed and watered !!"
The last customer is Sarf, the entertainer, who entertained your customers this winter but also literally ruined all foolish enough to gamble with him.

He calmly walks in and kneels by the body, looking it over. After doing all the typical checks for life signs he frowns, more-so than usual. Once again he unfolds the white shawl from his bag and drapes it over the body.

"Bah! The cold'll keep him fresh, at least till the funeral." He looks over the faces of all of the family present and sighs. "I don't expect the family of the deceased to carry the remains; I shall return in a bit with the stretcher..."

He turns and slowly walks back to his home deep in thought.
This isn't a good sign. The first casualty of the new year and so soon. These clerics had better do their job or they'll be hearin from me.

Sarf walks up to the bar and sits down right next to the warrior. Gleefully taking advantage of this fun opportunity, he turns and says "Fed and watered? You sound like a horse, and shouting like that will only you make you more so. Your food will come soon so you can be saddled and ridden to your picnic."

((Sorry I missed this thread for a while. Stupid insomnia and computer troubles.)) :smallmad:

Leticia stared around the kitchen mournfully. It'd been so quiet since Degnar had left... and she had trouble finding most of the kitchen's equipment. Stupid dwarf and his stupid organization system... *sigh* I miss him." Perking an ear, Leticia heard a bark from upstairs. "I'm coming, I'm coming, geez." Slipping her meat cleaver onto a loop on her belt, Leticia stomped up the stairs. As her foot came up off the last stair, she took a deep breath. She poured Sarf's usual choice of beverage and slid it to him with a wink, then turned to the new customer with a small grin.

"What can I get for you today?" :smallsmile:

@The Roaming Knight (Tyrandar ; HypoSoc) :

The half-orc turned enough to face Sarf, her gaze falling on the trickster with a mix of irritation and confusion : she clearly wasn't used to being talked that way, especially by peasants.
"-Big words..."
She leaned closer, a small grin on her face.
"-...for a small man. I'm sure that's yar way to offer a drink to the ladies, right ? 'cause ya the gallent type, not the cocky-litt'-runt-with-death-wish type. Me right or me right ?"

The arrival of Leticia, the Innkeeper, somehow diffused the tension : the half-orc clearly had a short attention spawn and the prospect of a meal was clearly more attractive than the prospect of a fight, especially that early in the morning.
"-'bout time. Gimme something light. Eared people boast about ya local brew, dwarf made they say. Can't go wrong with that !! Oh !! And gimme whateveryagot to eat. Two portions. Gotta keep on my diet."

Sarf laughs at the half-orcs humor and says:
"Gallant? You could say I'm a knight-person, sleeping the days and working the eves."
He then turns to Leticia, takes the drink, smiles, and says:
"My bed is soon, so I'd like a dinner, some bread and meat, fair wench. And bring a drink for this young girl, as long as she doesn't want one."
He then gulps down some of his brew.

After gathering the stretcher he stops at the Roaming Knight to request some help in carrying Jörgen back to his shop. He steps through the door and rolls his eyes at the current lack of useful individuals; the exception being Leticia, of course.

"I do not wish to interrupt your meal, but I would like to request help in carrying the winters latest casualty back to my shop."

@The Roaming Knight (Tyrandar ; HypoSoc ; Nanoblack) :
The half-orc giggled...or something close.
"-Yeah, tab is on Sir Smart-mouth."
She snorted before giving a vigorous push on Sarf's shoulder, nearly throwing off his balance.
"-Me likes ya. Ya got guts. Ain't afraid to talk back. Maybe ya brave, maybe ya crazy. But me like that. Shame I gotta leave when the two others get downstairs..."
She shrugged.
"-Bah !! Be back in a month or so !!"
She completely ignored the request of Nex : not her business.

As for the two old brothers, they were indeed far from useful and they knew it. They couldn't resist the opportunity to comment, though.
"-Go seek some youngsters, Master Ortus !! My son must still be sleepy. Let his wife do all the work, that lazy brat !! Go and tell him I send you. And that he better work his ass out of bed if he still want to get that farm before I meet the Stern Lady !!"
"-And, just out of curiosity, who's dead ? Gotta see if it's somebody who owes me some silver...or if I must present my respects."

Sarf looks at the door, after Nex leaves, and is relieved. He had avoided the mortician's gaze, and was glad to not have been noticed. Nex might know of his fear of dead bodies, and Sarf didn't want to be around the man while not in his prime, mocking condition.

@Nex's Lair :
Getting the help of the farmer wasn't that difficult : not only did Nex Orthus enjoyed a certain respect from the locals, but the authority of old Rastin over his son Thomas prompted the young man to action faster than if the barn would have been on fire.

As Nex observes the body, he can deduce that the death was, for all intent, natural. Sure, the man wasn't exactly healthy but which peasant is ? As far as the mortician can tell, there is no symptom of a life-threatening infection, parasite or disease, neither is there a proof of a violent, brutal death. However, he can feel *something* familiar, albeit he can't tell what. A more meticulous analysis might reveal it but the church will soon be asking for the body.

When the coin finally stop spinning, it lands face up, revealing it is now a real gold coin.

Of course, the half-orc ignores all of the missing gold coin in your purse, along with the additional copper coin in your pocket. She answer your question on a detached tone.

"-Usual stuff... Fidzel said we gotta get a treasure or something in the Misty Peak. A few kobold-scums to slash dead... Maybe I'm forgetting something... Ain't privy on the details. Not me job."
Suddenly, she stops talking, looking slightly worried.
-I shouldn't talk about it. Fidzel always says 't is not safe to talk with strangers. Could get us in trouble.
This said, she empties her tankard and slam it on the bar, all worriness vanished from her face. While taking a bit at her eggs, she extends to you yet another copper coin.
"-But ya no trouble. Ya just a jester !! Again..."
At that point, one has to worry if she's trying to get your tricks or just love watching the show.

"-He be my friend and associate. For five years, now. A strong guy, good with words and with blades. 'saw him cut off a troll's head in one swing, once. Man, that's good memories !!"
She eats some more eggs, her eyes leaving momentarily Sarf's hands as she remembers some of her adventures.
"-Yeah, he be strong but not as much as Guilda. That be me, by the way. Usually, he's the one who do the talking when we got hired. Always get us a good deal. Like with that old folk we gotta escort now. Greedy bastard wanted half of the stuff 'cause he thought he had done the worst part of the job, finding that map and all... Well, Fidzel had a long talk with him and now, old guy's taking only a quarter but he can choose first."

As she finishes her plate, steps echoed in the stairs. Soon, a large human in banded mail appears, a longsword hanging at his belt, along with at least three daggers and a small axe. He's carrying two backpack. The first, on his back, must be his. The second probably belong to Guilda, as he throws it near the half-orc before sitting.
"-Guilda. Looking good, I see. Did you already get the horses ? Ola, lady !! Two more plates !! And hurry, please !!"
"-Yup. Horses be ready at the door. Got a local to watch over them while I be...eating."
She avoids gazing at the pile of coins in Sarf's hand.

A second human, shorter by a good head, wearing a blue mantle, follows Fidzel quietly, throwing suspicious gazes around before sitting without a word.

Mikiya woke up after a long night of note-taking and planning. Spring was well on it's way, and therefore the trade routes would be open again. Between taking orders for various things, and getting items to trade for in the first place (Mostly what food he could acquire from the peasants and farmers.), he was kept up late writing everything down to remember what's what, and keeping things straight.

Rolling himself out of the caravan's bed, he roughly tied back some his blonde hair out of his eyes into a short ponytail with some string. He opened the back door of his caravan stationed in the marketplace, he looked around to see if there was anyone waiting for anything to be taken care of. If not, breakfast at the inn like usual sounded nice.

OOC: Sorry for waiting so long to post. Just to clarify: is there anyone waiting for the shop, or can Mikiya head to the inn for breakfast?

Ordered the best of everything I had, and Fidzel was a damn good tipper. From what I overheard, it looks like they're going to be coming into more too. They were going on and on about taking a trip to the Misty Peak in search of treasure. They seemed a little concerned about the kobolds (especially Ssilak) that live up there, so I doubt they'll make it." She offers a wistful sigh at the loss of such good customers. "The quiet guy kept talking about something "unholy" - maybe you should talk to Nex about that. Might also want to ask him about the Tome of F...somethingorother. Couldn't tell you where they're from, their accent was difficult to place. I tried to chat up the little guy, but when I gave him my name, all he said was "Charmed." It is common knowledge that the place is swarmed by kobolds, with at least 3 known tribes fighting each other for dominance.
Nothing about 'Ssilak' but given the changing nature of kobold politics, that's not a surprise.
In the past, there has been quiet a few tales of treasures about the place. Maybe it's true but one would have to go down the tunnels to check.

As I told you, I don't know the class crunch.
Rebuke Undead: (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/cwc/20060627a)Also beginning at 1st level, a dread necromancer can channel negative energy to rebuke or bolster undead. This power works just like the cleric ability (except that a dread necromancer with a neutral alignment cannot choose to turn undead instead of rebuking them). This power can prove useful for controlling and supporting undead allies the dread necromancer collects or summons.

While I don't think "holy" is necessary for an arcane caster, something special is necessary. A mystic symbol or something...

"Jörgen", or at least what remains of him, looks puzzled.

"-Told you were only delaying my fun..."

The claw slowly details the surface of Nex, who can now stare in horror as the monster hesitates about which part of his paralyzed body it should tear apart first.

As it does so, the sound of ripped flesh suddenly rises. The Ghoul stops, eyes wide opened in surprise. It looks down as a impressive "Splash !!" is heared. Next second, the monster is staring at Nex again.
"-Son of a bi..."
It then drop dead... Well, more dead than it already was, that's it. For nearly a minute, Nex stays there, wondering whether Jorgen is toying with him or if some miracle did happen...and what kind ?

As the numbness dissipates, Nex can see the inanimated corpse, bathing in its own fluid. Seems that spear thrust had had more impact than it appeared at first...

I let you explain what you want Lucas and Rheara to know.

@All :
Once this scene is done, we'll get started with Month 1
Basically, the speed of the game will be greatly increased (or so I hope).
You'll be asked to choose among the adventure hooks.
Depending of your choice and how you handle things, you will get reputation, wealth, experience and influence.

We can either play each adventure hooks as a full adventure or we can fast-skip each of them with a few dice rolls based on your skills and levels. Your call. Please indicate your preference in the OOC Thread (short link on the first page of this thread)

"I was finishing up the autopsy for JÖrgon when I found an anomaly. I decided to study it further as I hadn't seen anything like it in a villager before. I turned to gather my instruments and when I turned around he awoke and attacked me!"

He takes the bandage off and lets them observe his wounds.

"These things do not happen spontaneously. I think someone may wish ill of this town. Had this monster gotten out it could have caused an epidemic."

@Nanoblack :

"-Mmmh..."
Lucas looks at your scratch with the morbid curiosity of a scholar. He doesn't seem really phased by the news of undead presence in Shyte.
"-You will live, that's for sure. I'll need to examine the corpse of poor Jorgen to know what other sequels you might have, though."
His hand passes close to the wound. As the adept whispers a short prayer, a deep red light shine at the tip of his fingers. An itchy feeling spread along your face as the scratch is healed.

"-Your Grace..."
Lucas Mort turns respectfully toward the priestess. The woman is tall, wearing a ample crimson ceremonial mantel above her armor. Her black hair are cut short, as is the custom among battle priest. Her soft features betray inexperience, though this is more than compensated by the strong presence emanating from her gray gaze. As she comes close, she extends a hand.
"-We haven't met, I believe. Rheara Starr, Diacre of the Ruby Order. I've been sent by Our Lady's clergy to be Her hand. Given what I overheard of your story, the Cardinal was wise in his choice."
She speaks with a dry, commanding voice, though no arrogance lays in it. Simply a bit blunt. Her words do sound right, though.

She gestures toward Lucas.
"-Brother Lucas, I may outrank you but you are still in charge of this community's spiritual being. The people listens to you. I want you to gather here the Guard, the Lord and those of the villagers who have influence in Shyte, along with the family of the Cursed One. Have them wait here while I go with Master Ortus to fetch the corpse. Do NOT inform them of the situation before everyone is locked in this sacred building."
"-It...shall be done, your Grace."

The woman then speaks to you again.
"-You have some experience at fighting, it seems, master mortician. I'd like to know more about you... and about what you've observed since you settled in Shyte. Undeads rarely appear overnight without reasons... If you weren't here, reporting the incident, I would believe you hold some responsability in this. But maybe you do. Anything you would like to tell me before we head for your home ?"
She gives you half a smile.

"I played no part in his reanimation however I must admit I had been taking longer than usual to examine the body. My scholarly curiosity got the better of me when I found the anomaly I mentioned earlier. I was just finishing the examination when he awoke."

He fights back another frown when she mentions his combat prowess.

"Shyte is a small town full of small people... they need all the help they can get in defending themselves. I see enough dead people as it is."

What are my Gather information results?

Johel
2010-06-15, 07:22 AM
@Hyposoc :
Before you go home, you probe for information regarding the tome and the band of adventurers.
The common folk have heard nothing about the former and some even throw you suspicious looks as you ask around about "unholy tome". If somebody knew something about that, no doubt you would know it but as it is, Shyte's inhabitants are as clueless as you are.
Several people noted the adventurers, though. They are at the center of a few conversations, mainly those of children. Apparently, the trio checked in at the Lord's manor yesterday, letting their horses for the night, along with a generous tip for the stabbleboy. The half-orc bought supplies at Mikiya's general store while Fitzel and the scholar headed for the Inn. Neither of them gave details about the reason of their presence but nobody asked...
Regarding the Misty Peak, the elders have more than an few tales about it and its residents : kobolds digging deep under the mountain, goblins on a rampage through the neighboring woods, wyverns battling giants for the high ground, horny ogres kidnapping helpless maids, greedy dragons hoarding treasures and terrible demons assembling cults... Each story is more fantastic than the last but they bear little in common beside :

People tends to get hallucinations because of the sulfure
The peak itself is devoid of plants because of the fumes.
It is surrounded by a lush forest.
Kobolds infest the peak.
Gobelins infest the forest.
It is one of many destinations for wannabe tresor hunters.

@Hyposoc :
As you arrive at the manor, you meet Lucas Mort, who is on his way out with Lord Verrath, the Sergeant Gillian, two guards and a bunch of paysans. They all seem confused and clueless as to what is going on, except for Lucas, who looks really tired, and the Lord, who keeps a proud face, not betraying any worry.

The group advances quickly through the streets, not pausing to greet you. This looks like some serious business. They continue toward the chapel.

@Nanoblack :
Along the way, Rheara doesn't press you for further details about your martial skills. She does let out an appreciative whistle as she inspect the body and the spear wound. She doesn't comment on the numerous slashes the monster sports on its torso and which are clearly not the work of your weapon.

She helps you to load the still-strapped body on the stretcher and then only comments on the nature of the undead.
"-And a Ghoul, nothing less... Facing such monster alone is pure suicide."
With her weapon, she pushes aside the arm of Jorgen, pointing at the deformed claw-like hand.
"-A mere scratch is enough to paralyzed most people. And given the size of those claws, it rarelly inflict a mere scratch. It's already a miracle you defeated it but that you held it at bay long enough to kill it and this without much of a wound is beyond me. Especially for... Well, an alchemist. Care to show me how the fight went ?"

@Hyposoc :
It doesn't take long for a servant to come open the door.
The man is tall and slender, wearing clean clothes of good fabric, on which the arms and coats of House Verrath is visible. You've seen him a couple of times in the village but can't remember his name.
He throws a haughty look at you : peasants don't come here everyday, knocking at the door of their Lord and you just don't look like a wealthy/important guest.
"-What do you want, Systel ?"
Oooh... He DOES remember your name.
Probably lost a few coins...

He gestures toward the area in his home where the fight took place. "I had just finished sewing him up when he awoke and attacked me. He asked me if I had done this to him..."

He points his finger along the path he took to get his spear. I grabbed my spear and we went at each other. I caught him one good time before one of his claws grazed me. Haha... I dropped like a sack of potatoes... right there I really thought I was going to die. I guess the hole I put through him tore out some of stitching that was holding him together because when he leaned over to tear out my throat he just dropped dead... again."

Knowledge religion to know how ghouls are created: [roll0]

Johel
2010-06-18, 05:14 PM
@Hyposoc :
Lucky you, farmers have to wake up early.
Most of the villagers wave you away when you ask about the Lord's location : they are busy and for all they know, the Lord should be at his manor, with his family.
A few people did see the procession earlier. They point you in the direction of the chapel.

@Nanoblack :

Ghouls can be created through several processes.
Some of them appear naturally, as a result of large concentration of negative energy. This can occurs in unholy grounds or near areas where powerful necromantic spells have been used, although this is rare.
Knowing that phenomenon, the worshippers of dark gods sometime set the right conditions to trigger such thing, calling upon their divine master for assistance.
A few necromancers are also known to have successfully mastered the process without the help of any god.
However, most ghouls are the result of another ghoul biting a living humanoid, infecting him with a deadly rot. The disease slowly transforms the infected into a ghoul. The final stage of the metamorphosis only occur well after the person dies.
Rumors are that cannibalismwould somehow trigger the mechanism in some cases, although you've heard of no serious study about that.
Because of the social stigma attached to necromancy, information is at best partial, at worst inaccurate. Yet, you have yourself experimented with negative energy and though said experiments were only small-scale and on animals, you know very well how it can twist dead matter into a parody of life.

The priestess seems skeptical but she doesn't press you. After all, it's not like she can't find you if she needs more details later.
Soon, you are good to go back to the chapel.
If you need to take something from your house, do it now.

Both of you arrive at the chapel at roughly the same moment.
You can clearly hear the sound of a small crowd chatting inside the building.

Lucas Mort is at the entrance, waiting for the return of Rheara and Nex.
As they arrive, he nods to the priestess.
"-It is done. Lord Verrath and his sergeant are in there, along with the family of late Jorgen and a few villagers who, while having no official power, hold quite a bit of influence in Shyte. You might want to go easy with them your Grace."

He gives a disgusted look at the deformed body of Jorgen.
"-Shall we... bring it inside ?"

Neither the priest or the priestess remark Sarf. Maybe the entertainer is that good at hiding or maybe they just don't care.

"-Hum..."
The priestress hesitated a moment.
"-No need to reveal the body yet. We will let inside, just at the entrance, before closing the doors."

She eyes at Sarf.
"-Brother Lucas, is that young man one of our guests ?"
Lucas Mort nearly chokes himself at the question.
"-Oh no !! No, he isn't !!"
"-I see... Well, if you haven't summoned him, why is he here ?"
Lucas shrugs.
"-The young Sarf is... well... let's say very independent."
"-Hum... We can't have him wander around, though. Not until we decide what to do. Bring him in but make sure he doesn't do anything stupid."

This said, she turned to Nex.
"-Ortus, let's move in. I'll need you to tell the story one more time for these people. Be honest and direct. Facts only, no theory as to why this incident occurred."

If you follow her inside the chapel :
Inside are around twenty people. You know most of them by name, as they are the main figures of the village. The principals are :

Lord Verrath, who represents the Baron's authority in Shyte.
Sergeant Guillian, who is the chief of the guards.
Master Frank, eldest hobbit in the village and informal head of their small community.
Leticia Moran, the innkeeper of the "Roaming Knight".
Relar, a healer and loner, whose father used to be well-liked at Shyte before he departed around 20 years ago.
Master Torak, an violent yet respected land owner, who employs around 12 people.
Master Imbasel, a dwarf and the village's blacksmith.
Mistress Blanche, matriarch of the Roach family, who has an important cheptel of sheeps.

The others are either craftsmen or landowners. There are also 2 guards, among which is Alaar Akatosh.

The Lord opens the discussion.
"-Sister Rheara !! For a newcomer, you do manage your introduction !! Not a week has passed and yet, you already outreach your authority, it seems. What is the motive of this so-urgent reunion ?"
The priestress gestures toward Nex.
"-He will explain."

If you don't follow her, explain what you do or say. I'll roll with it.

"Earlier today I was attacked in my home by none other than the late Master Jörgon. You might be wondering how this is possible as I was seen hauling him off to perform his autopsy the day before... I am still wondering that." He takes a deep breath and continues with an apologetic look in his eyes directed towards Jörgons family. Immediately after finishing my examination, I had turned to gather my instruments when he arose and viciously attacked me. Had I not had my spear nearby I probably wouldn't be standing in front of you now; the wound on my face is a testament to that fact." He once again breathes deeply then turns to Rhea to see if she was ready to speak again.
