Anaxagoras currently the head of the Military Academy of Naucratis and sitting member of the city council, sat on a rough stage in the dusty courtyard of the Military Academy, a building originally designed to help train young men in the arts of battle as required by law. When the city had been handed over to its Greek residents it had been because of their military prowess and willingness to serve the ruler of Egypt loyally. The hoplites of old however were less and less in demand, and the Military Academy had over time changed its purpose from training hoplites to finding and training Imperial Agents.

Unlike the usual students the six infront of him had only come to the academy for a matter of months to prove the skills they already had and gain certification. In exchange for this the students would serve the city for a further year of training and testing before finally being free to seek their future anywhere within the empire.

Anaxagoras cleared his throat. "It is with great honour I congratulate you in completing the part of your training within this Academy and offer you gifts to carry forwards into your future. I can only hope you all continue to hold yourselves to the high standards of behaviour and the rigorous training of skill that you have demonstrated in your time here. With that I ask you to all step forwards towards the stage and collect one of these golden daggers, I hope they symbolise what you will become."

To one side of the bundles sat nine golden daggers each with a different pommel lion, fox, jackal, ibex, deer, camel, raven, swan and finally ostrich.

Anaxagoras stands up infront of them and holds out his hand to point towards them, with his palm open as if presenting them, he waits for each graduate to make their selection.

Nava, hunched into her notebook, had been sketching a diagram of tern in flight, the soft skritch-skritch of her charcoal stick forming the bird's beak and slender tail streamers. She scratched a tiny note beneath it - "shorter wings, faster beats" - and looked up, noticing Anaxagoras had been speaking.

Nava disappeared the notebook into her bag and cleared her throat sheepishly. "Oh. Um, thanks. I was glad to learn."

She let her fingers drift over the pommels of the daggers, pausing on one with a flicker on interest. "Hm... the jackal. Such a maligned animal, but really, they're quite resourceful. During the last dry season, I watched a hunting pair dig out a channel at night to collect groundwater before the day drank it up."

She pocketed the dagger cheerfully. "'Nature is wont to hide herself' indeed."

It was not clear to whom she was speaking and if anyone was listening, Nava would probably not have noticed.

"And now finally you will recieve your equpiment, please follow me to our armoury."

Anaxagoras gathers the three remaining daggers, and leads the way to the armoury, the room is vast and cold, the ceiling is high and everywhere you look you can see more and more weapons ranging from the mostly impractical to the deadly.

On a long counter sits numerous piles of items just waiting for someone to pick them, behind the counter stands a wiry old woman, her wrinkles deeper than you had imagined possible and her expression keen, in a time where the life expectancy was not too long she was truly the most ancient crone you have seen.

"Come to the counter take what you need, I have been quartermaster in this here academy for half a century. I can tell you what you need better than you even realise yourself." You notice her accent is phoenician, not a rare thing in the city but most commonly heard from traders and dock workers.

The first bundle contains scale mail and a heavy wooden shield, beside it sits a costume suited for wearing in the desert itself with flowing loose robes. A full waterskin sits beside a razor sharp sickle, finished off with three sunrods tied in a bundle.

The second is armour made of unusual hide, it appears to be made from the skin of a large crocodile, there is a ring of sharp teeth pointing outwards from the collar and a heavy wooden shield. A longspear sits propped up against the counter infront of it and a small jar of blackeye behind it.

The third bundle has more scale mail, near over the mail sits a heavy wooden shield, the weapon included is a trident and with it comes a net packed tight into a small package and some manacles.

The fourth studded armour and a heavy wooden shield, a parasol sits next to it. When examined closely the top of the parasol comes off leaving you with a short and sharp throwing spear, beside the parasol you notice a plain dagger.

The fifth bundle contains studded leather, and a light wooden shield. A light mace sits upon a tied bundle of javelins. Thieves tools side beside a standard adventurers kit.

The sixth bundle is the most unusual of all, it contains padded armour and warhammer. A healers kit and a disguise kit sit beside a rope made of silk.

"Don't be afraid pick a pile, and then you may take a ranged weapon from the rack, finally collect your uniform cape and helmet that you must wear when on patrol. Once you get some time on the street you will be able to place custom weapon and armour orders here. Just ask for old Tanis"

She gestures to a rack filled with light crossbows, slings and darts. There are infront of the rack bundles of ammunition, bundles of 50 bolts and pouches of 50 sling bullets. The darts are packed in 20s.

Anaxagoras notices disappointed looks upon some faces, and he hastens to explain."We used to have people signing up and collecting armour and weaponry, more than they could carry almost and then resigning keeping it all as if it were a gift. Once you are done here I ask you to don your armour and uniforms and head down to the docks there has been a request for assistance from Eunomia who heads the guard down there."

Another sketch and a series of notes went into Nava's journal as she followed the group to the armory, lagging a half-step behind as she copied the jackal's head onto a new page with vigor.

Nava examined the remaining bundles of equipment over the shoulders of her companions, and sidled her way among jostling shields and weapons to the end of the counter, taking the sixth bundle.

"This armor seems light enough for me, though I don't know what I'll do with this..." she said, hefting the healer's supplies. Noticing Barian set down the set of thieve's tools, she offered the kit with a smile.

"Trade? I'm afraid I'm not very good at treating wounds. Euphemios says I have a terrible hand for medicine."

Nava moved to the weapon rack and gathered up a crossbow for herself, then attached the warhammer to her belt. "I suppose I should put my weapon drills to use, but this thing seems awfully unweildly."

Tanis finds herself unable to stop another cackle. "So you youngsters can already think as a group after all, trading items around to figure out what is most effective for the group rather than yourself as an individual. Maybe the lessons have sunk in."

Anaxagoras is starting to look impatient, however you know him well enough to know he is just trying to hurry you up, if anything he is actually proud. "The docks wont be getting any better with you all up here admiring your shiny new weaponry, get your backsides moving in that direction!"

Ella

Outside the gates of the military academy the first thing you see is some of the biggest, most impressive houses within the city rivalled only by those clustered near the temples.

Early in the history of the city the land here had been settled by the greek mercenaries who had gained the city as a greek colony. Amongst the older families in the district of the city they often spoke of the tales of heroics of their ancestors that had them living in such luxury. The newer famlies more often were from more mercantile families. Of course there was also a third group but they weren't spoken about, however everyone does know Naucratise is famed for the beauty of its courtesans and ladies of the night.

You reach the docks relatively fast because you managed to skirt the market district and avoid the slow foot traffic. You see boats as far away from the actually docks as possible while still being possible to board. Everyone notices Eunomia quite easily, she is the furious lady screaming at a group of labourers however as you get closer you notice she is screaming simply to be understood clearly and she is giving clear instructions to clear the loads from each boat as quickly as possible and then getting them back upstead and out to sea.

Nava passed a spot check and so she has also noticed a large Nile Crocodile. While they are common to the area they do tend to avoid getting so close to such a busy part of the waterway.

OOC: Feel free to investigate the docks, but you should report to Eunomia sooner than later.

Ella

Eunomia gives a broad grin at the assembled group of adventurers as she looks them over. "Take a look at the river, the water is disappearing, and so much water is leaving that I can see it hour by hour. What I want is for you to head downstream and discover whats happening. And then I need you to fix it, look at those boats docked here, if I don't offload them fast enough they will get stuck in the silt and mud and then commerce will come to a stop."

Around the docks you can see various people, the rushing labourers unloading the boats and stacking goods up to the height of the rooves of nearby buildings. An important looking scribe stands by the piles making notes about the quantities of various goods coming ashore. Down the far end of the docks stands a couple of wizened old fishermen.

The nearby buildings include warehouses, an office of the local government to deal with taxation by the waterfront and a tavern known most of all for its cheap drinks and beautiful serving girls.

Valleron can hear the river, and looking back towards Naucratis he notices a fishing barge coming down the river towards their location.

Barian can hear the frogs hidden in the mud around the Nile, looking towards the river he can see something solid on the bottom of the river itself, the silt makes it unclear what is actually down there however, but it looks to be as tall as 5 men and it lies on an odd angel an incline of you would guess 45 degrees.

Targus can hear a faint gurgling noise, and over it what seems like a constant beat however the more he listens he comes to realise it is actually multiple faint beats at the same time, coming from all directions. Looking towards the river he notices something that strikes him as quite unusual there are scarlet ibis' digging in the newly exposed mud from the drop in the water level. The crocodiles are ignoring them.

Kari-Mar can hear her own beating heart, and can barely make out the movement of the rivers water over it. She can see on the very horizon greenery, and even trees in a roughly circular area, it would appear to be most likely to be an oasis.

Gammon can hear the river, and further down the river in the direction they have been travelling he can see a figure, or at least something unidentifiable from this distance climbing along the bank of the river. It moves like a creature accustomed to moving on two feet however it is short enough not to hesitate at falling to the ground and using all four limbs.

Nava can hear the river and something moving within it, upon tracing the noise it appears to be a couple of crocodiles doing their best log impression amongst some reeds. Looking away from the river she can see the sand.

Sirano has noticed none of these things and is instead trying to find a way to attach his lyre to a length of wood he has found nearby to create a mobile stand for it. "You know friends, I have studied this area in great detail, my mother owns some land this way that is quite beautiful in winter. Have you ever seen a region of such stillness and silent beauty."

" I cannot think of any specific boats that have disappeared exactly here in the river, but who would really know once a boat leaves Naucratis there is absolutely no guarentee that we will see it again. This goes double for independent merchants and boats rented purely for travel sometimes barely float."

Valleron considers Cirano's words. Salvage.... maybe this is the reason for all of this - someone is damming the river to allow for the salvage of a sunken boat. And the cargo is presumably worth enough to justify all this fuss.

You arrive at the foliage you saw the creature near, as you get closer you notice one of its limbs sticking out from behind a palm tree, its deceptive stillness suggests a great level of skill in hiding.

As you get closer you hear a noise, a soft clicking like a bizarre language coming from the other side of the tree however you fail to notice anything that the creature could be communicating with.

From behind the tree the figure steps out however it is not as you had thought from earlier sightings, more observant people would even be tempted to swear that the creature has changed.

A child steps beside the tree, he appears to be about eight years old and unarmed he is wearing a fine yellow robe that shines as sunlight plays upon its surface. He is wearing an expensive looking brimless hat with a yellow band around it and he has his hands raised up in the air. He keeps his hands up and starts to make clicking noises with his tongue.

Once Barian's javelin struck the water the effect was near immediate, piercing the creature through its chest, leaving it unconscious and rapidly bleeding out, as the body floats to the surface you recognise it as similar to the creature from the bushes originally was. You can see its scaled skin where it sticks out from its armour, and it is at most 3ft tall, between its legs sticks out a tail.

Kari-Mar's attack on the now immobile creature destroy its head entirely, the corpse continues to bob with the motion of the water.

The stone that flew from Valleron's sling hits the water hard and knocks the creature hard and disables it, it floats to the surface revealing another one of the lizardfaced scaly creatures.

Nava's show glances off the creatures hide armour, failing to penetrate its flesh. The arrow floats on the surface of the river just behind it.

I am pretty sure you can guess what they are now, but try not to metagame too much, because there is a reasonable-ish explanation :)

Sireno speaks up. "How do you fix a hole in any vessel for carrying water?"

Sogdianus smirks. "You wouldn't believe it if I told you, would you accept creatures that have always been here but have slowly been usurped over time. Unlike me they wont pass for anything near human. The mines are only an hours travel along the river from here."

I care not much about the copper, Barian. 'tis heavy, but comes down to only 50 gold. I'll drop it here. If, by the time we go back, it's lost, you can take the 50 out of my share. What did we have there? Slightly above 1,000 per person? Yes, I think I can spare the 50 gold if that will convince you to move on.

A short while later you notice more bodies on the bottom of the river, slowly drifting, some weight must be holding them down allowing them to slowly scrape along the rivers bottom.

It is almost an hour later by your best judgement when you start to hear a sucking noise, somewhere within the reeds at the near side of the river, the waters draining away from the river gurgle and spit, occasionally forming a mini whirlpool sucking deeply from the river pulling the reeds around it into a fallen circle around its mouth.

Valleron ties one end of the rope to his waist. Can someone hold on to this please?

Ella
2010-06-22, 12:09 AM
The hole is surrounded by reeds, you are able to grab them to provide extra stability in exploring.

There are no large boulders around, and stones are barely bigger than your hand, the edges of the riverbank are thick with floating corpses, some have birds perched on their backs, pecking at their still hard skin.

"I will hold you." Sireno takes the end of the rope from Valleron and ties it to his camels saddle. "Who needs to use their own strength when they have such beautiful beasts to assist."

As Valleron approaches the hole, the water gets muddier and muddier, the spinning nature of the water around the hole is kicking up sediment and river mud. He can see that the diameter of the hole is roughly the same as his arm.

Lin Bayaseda
2010-06-23, 02:29 PM

Ella

The bodies seem to only be downstream from the hole in the riverbank, they bear no signs of injury beyond the fact they are obviously dead, they are dressed oddly with some wearing a touch of armour but most wearing nothing to leath tunics and carrying mining equipment.

"They would have been miners for the most part." the child speaks up, pointing towards the floating corpses.

Maybe we can build a circular wall of rocks and mud around the swirling hole, force the river to go around? What do you think?

How deep is the water around the swirling hole anyway? ie., how tall will the wall have to be?

Ella
2010-06-29, 01:14 PM
"If you want to do that, I would be honoured to assist in this venture." Sireno smiles, his eyes affixed to the hole.

The water around the hole is shallow, its near the banks of the river and would be as deep at your mid shin.

Lin Bayaseda
2010-06-29, 01:33 PM
Well then, we go to work. Hauling rocks in sacks and saddlebags, dropping them around the hole in a circle, and strenghtening the construction with mud and reeds.

Hopefully we can count on the help of the absentees?

Also, need to take into account the fact that once the downpour is stopped, the level of water is likely to rise, so we build the wall to match this expected water level.

Ella
2010-06-29, 01:52 PM
Sireno and Sogdianus start to pile rocks of all sizes into the saddly bags of the various camels, with the assistance of the rest of the party. As each camel has a full load they walk it towards the wall for ease unloading.

As the wall is built, the water entering the shaft in the riverbed slows to a trickle, seeping through and around rocks, the water level slowly starts to return to its original height.

Well, speaking of myself, I'm going to buy a good sturdy Greatsword, and if I can afford it, upgrade the armor a bit. The equipment we got when we enlisted ... it was adequate, but we can do better. What about you, Deeg, you a fighting man? Hands itching for a good sword too, maybe?

Deeg looked at Valleron, confused a bit by his generosity, but nevertheless intrigued.

"Oh, yes, I mean, not a sword, my tribe rarely used swords, too much metal, we usually use what we call a 'Loncheen' it's basically like a spear but with a blade that goes down the side a bit, like a glaive but less well made and you had to sharpen it every couple of minutes unless you wanted to club an enemy to death, which is not a very good way to kill somebody an-"

Deeg stopped himself before he got too carried away, then tried again:

"So I guess I'd like to use a glaive, provided that's okay with you, umm, sir?"

Realizing that she hadn't introduced herself yet, Kari-Mar looks slightly embarrassed. "Erm... Hi. I'm Kari-Mar. Nice to meet you all."

One of the Daggers (the one with the tiger head) disappears before Talen steps out of the shadows.
Thank you sir for teaching me some honour, I will try and remember all your lessons.

He turns to the rest of the group. Ah we meet again. He frowns. Or maybe not this was a big academy and I don't recall meeting you before. My name is Talen. Pleased to meet you.

I heard some discussion on the subject of equipment, I think I would like some different weapons as I prefer light blades to a mace, preferably 2 blades.

Ismene stares at Talen for moment. "Any more people hidden in those shadows? Anyways greetings Kari-Mar and Talen. If I could add personal wishes for equipment." She thinks for a moment. "While I didn't really expect to fight myself, I even use my spear as parasol, a weapon of choice would be a mace, I dislike shedding blood." Without noticing herself she places her hand on her holy symbol while stating that. "And better armor and shield wouldn't hurt."

"I guess better armor is always usefull...
I don't need any new weapons, except maybe a sicle..."
She wasn't really a weapons-person ,her spells were all she really needed.

"We might need to get some food and water too"

"One last thing" Anaxagoras eyes the group carefully "I have just a few more graduates to present with their daggers but Valleron and Kari-Mar when you see Tannis you had best tell her of your promotions, sort the new ones however you want but the pair of you are now in command of a small unit, a test of your capabilities in a sense."

"Make me proud."

Kari-Mar performs a bow to her former headmaster. "You are too kind, sir. I will do my best."

"You needn't wait for the last few, I can send them to you when they finish their final testing within these walls, if they pass, I will give them some armour, a dagger and send them chasing after you."

Hefting his sword out of its scabbard, he holds it so it reflects the light, it bounces off the blade and onto his faces, showing every detail clearly.

"Keep moving ahead at the rate you are going, and you will end up with one of these of your own."

Thank you Sir, for this assignment, as well as the added fighting strength.

We are becoming a formidable unit indeed!

Wearing a simple tunic and sandals, Adrastos entered the room just as the party was starting to get ready to leave. He looked around, curious as to where he was to get his gear.
