View Full Version : Rise of The Eldrazi

Alright, then. First time I've done this, so I'm a little uncertain on how to start.

The recent Eldrazi invasion has left much of the world pulling up what defenses it can muster, and an alliance of the major groups fighting the Eldrazi has formed. Known as the Council, the leading group has formed several powerful strike teams to fight Eldrazi probes and exterminate their spawn.

The small town of Koris is the staging area for an assault against a small, magically-fortified Eldrazi outpost that has been disrupting supply lines in the area. You and several others were called together to form a strike team to spearhead the assault. You each received a magical message requesting your presence at a meeting where the attack will be planned out. The location is a fortified temple near the center of the town, where the representatives of several Council members are waiting.

Alright, if you want to do anything before going to the temple tell me. Koris is located in a relatively fertile area and was a growing town before the Eldrazi attacked, and the nearby forests, rivers and the like provided abundant resources. The Eldrazi destroyed several other villages and hamlets in the area and are believed to be gathering a force in the forest to overrun the town. The Eldrazi have disrupted supply lines and their spawn have made hunting difficult, and the crops are being affected by their corruption, so swift action must be taken before the town begins to run out of food.

If you want to know more about the meeting:

There are rumors that the Council is at the temple, rather than their representatives.

Emily yawned as she approached the temple. For a land drenched in war, the day had sure been boring.

She knocked, and then, impatient, went in.

Jumping off of his ride as they approached the town, Aeon turned and bowed to the dragon.

"I thank you for getting me this far. I suppose we might cross paths once more, in the future, when I might be able to repay you for this." He says, straightning up.

">Your thanks are welcome, warmblood, but the service you provided was more than sufficent to cover this short flight that I gave you.<" The dragon (a red one, oddly enough) replied, nodding slightly, before turning and taking off, flying away.

A few minutes pass.

"Well, I guess I'd better go find this temple that I was asked to report to..." The epically named human mutters, turning towards the town and walking in.

---------

An hour later...

"...Where am I?" He asks himself, looking around and finding himself hopelessly lost.

While standing in front of the temple.

(retcon!)

"Hey!" said Emily, turning around with the door half open. "You one of the people going on a god-thing killing mission?"
"Oh, hiya nice to meet you!" said a small, pink crystal, swooping around her head.

The-Mage-King

"What? Oh, yes. Now if I can just find that temple..." Aeon replies, turning around and looking directly away from said temple.

Tarlas leaned forward as the landscape roared past underneath him, his hood draw close over his face, bathing it in darkness even in the midday sun and the baking heat roaring off of Vox, his mount. His cloak was a drab brown, and was edged with rips, tears, and burns from the centuries that he had worn it. His hands, the sole visible part of him, were deathly cold and gaunt, even in the roasting heat that Vox's back carried with it. Vox himself, was a spectacle: a monsterous, skeletal beast that, despite the fact that it had no flesh to burn, was encased in a continual, roaring inferno, the flames pouring off of him almost comparable to long, flowing hair being caught up in the wind.

They were headed to a meeting it seemed, in a town they had seen many times, but had never had the wish to enter. Koris, it was called. He hadn't set foot in a city for an age, it seemed. Right now, he and his mount were soaring silently between the tree's in the woods not too far from the town. This always was easy, as elephant made their way through here, and carved out clear paths where underbrush wouldn't cling to a passerby. He would need to pull up soon, so that his approach would be known to the gaurds...

----

Tarlas held a single arrow in the air above his head as he came towards the city walls, letting those who were watching his approach know that he had been called. Pulling up on his reins, Tarlas guided Vox to slow down as they rushed over the city walls, guiding his flaming mount to land on the temple walls, just a little further into the city. Probably too much of a flashy entrance, but, hey, he was here. He climbed off the scorching beast as some of the temple gaurd approached him, "Hey, you're the specter that the council summoned, right?"

Tarlas simply turned slowly to face the young gaurd, and nodded.

"Uh, well, we're here to escort you to the meeting place," the gaurd said, obviously a little put off by the specter's complete silence.

Tarlas just nodded again.

"Uh, well, then, just right this way, sir," he said, blinking a couple of times before leading the way into the temple. Tarlas wasn't surprised, things with souls never were prepared for when they met someone without one.

From inside the temple came several crashes, followed by shouts and a scream. The doors shook, and a moment later four cloaked figures burst out of the building, one of them limping and collapsing after a few steps. From inside the temple three strange creatures come, strange amalgamations of flesh.

Glancing at the monsters, Aeon throws forth his mana and calling a pair of zombified ogres to to him.

Or, more accurately, one to the air ten feet in front of him and thirty-five feet 'north', with 'north' meaning up, and the other immediately next to it, both over the odd creatures.

Actions: Cast Summon Undead IV, calling two Ogre Zombies to the air above enemies, causing them to fall on said enemies.

Also, five foot step back.

Vox glanced at the door as the robed figures came out of it, and unfurled his wings as he felt the enemies coming. He wouldn't move till after Tarlas, of course, and held his action till he went.

Tarlas, however, is attempting a Knowledge (Religion) check as a free action.

EDIT: It seems that Tarlas knows what these things are, and a bit about where they come from, but no further details.

Fwiff! The beam flies wide. These things seem to be pretty fast on their feet, for something that looks like a stitched-together lump of flesh. Also, something seems to have thrown your aim off a bit...

Creature 1 reaches out to touch the zombie before it, but just sort of pathetically paws at the air, missing badly.

Well, that was... not a battle.

Well, good to see that there were some strong people in the world still. Tarlas walks up to the doors where the two individuals were standing, bringing with him a deathly chill and the warm of Vox, who was walking calmly alongside him. Once he had the last of the three necrotic entities in his mind, however, he would lash out inperceptibly, and pierce into what little mind it had, corrupting it like a clear stream, with blood.

Actions Taken

Tarlas moved to [F-6], Vox moved to [G-H-5-6].

Tarlas used Quandry on the only remaining strange enemy. Strange enemy gains a 40% miss chance on it's next attack, become unable to make a critical hit for the next 8 rounds, and must make a DC 23 Will save or think that Tarlas is the only opponent on the battlefield.

Fwiff! Once again, the beam misses, this time it almost seemed to be nudged away by an invisible field around the creature, which is leaking smashed organs onto the floor. From inside the temple, the sound of cracking glass is heard as an innocent water container is shattered by the evil Emily.

EDIT: And here I was wondering why nobody was taking their turn. :smallsigh:

The remaining creature once again reaches out to the zombie before it, and this time it is able to connect, resulting in the zombie seeming to bulge slightly, looking more...fit, somehow.

Watching, the Epically named human nods slightly, before turning to the other people near by.

"Oh, hello. How are you folks? And who are you?" He asks, ignoring the crunching sound from behind him as his zombies swing their greatclubs at the mysterious enemies.

"And where, exactly, are we? Because I got this letter saying I was requested at this temple place, and I can't seem to find it..."

The first zombie successfully hits the undead, dealing heavy damage. The other zombie smashes the body of one of a fearsome-looking redead.

Nice job.

Thank you for the assistance. One of the cloaked people says, addressing the group.

Yes, if you hadn't stepped in, those things might have killed us. The injured one says, standing slowly while being supported by another.

Anyways, you need to find whatever created those things soon! They were fresh, and that means that an Eldrazi Probe is nearby! There's no time to waste! One of the others says, stepping forwards and gesturing wildly.

The-Mage-King

Tarlas simply stood by the side and watched stoicly. When the men told them that there was still more to be done, however, he moved in a flash, grabbing Vox's reins and stepping on his skeletal mount's rib cage, just to jump and position himself in the saddle smoothly, and spur the great beast into flight, shooting out like a bullet, travelling an easy 840 feet in just 6 seconds.

Ride check to mount Vox as a free action (DC 20): [roll0]

Regardless of whether the ride check fails or succeeds, Tarlas is going to be scouting ahead to look for the eldrazi the men spoke about. He has 'good' maneuverability, so, he should be able to go through the inside of the temple without breaking any valuables, or even scuffing the carpet.

Alright. Inside the temple is a large, round table with some papers and drinks on it. There are several large windows, two of them smashed, at the other end of the temple. They look out into an alleyway, and two tentacles are waving in the air, the rest of the creature hidden from view.

Emily, I've sent you a PM with what the creature looks like.

The-Mage-King

He rushed to get a better view of it, grabbing one of the drinks on his way by and taking a sip.

Vox drove through the building in an instant, heat from his flaming wings filling the enclosed space almost instantly, before Tarlas noticed the tentacls waving on the edge of vision. He pulled up on the reins and drove Vox to turn sideways, finding the fastest possible route out of the temple and to that alleyway (Through a window? a door? the wall maybe?).

Tarlas reached up on his back and pulled out two of the dusty arrows from the quiver on his back as the foe came into his veiw, and he guided Vox to sweep low, so that he could see the entitiy better (get it in his blindsight). He drew two of the arrows back, bringing the bow tight as he held them perfectly steady, pointing their evil-looking tips at the tentacled mass before him, just to release them with a 'twang' of the wire.

Well, in the nearby forest there has been a disturbance. We believe that several artifacts of the Eldrazi are there, and if we could recover them we could convert them into a weapon to use against them and their Spawn. The armed figure says. However, we thing that it's guarded by at least one Probe, several Spawn and, well...We've heard reports that some people were spotted there. The Eldrazi have twisted their minds but left their bodies mostly intact, making them a sort of half-spawn.

The problem with these half-spawn is that they have been kidnapping travelers and merchants, even some soldiers. They've subjected them to Eldrazi energies and have built a compound around the artifacts. One continued.

The artifacts are pyramid-shaped and covered in runes. Touch them with thick gloves only, or the Eldrazi energies could affect you. Once you have collected them, return immediately, as moving them from the compound, which will allow us to reverse the energies, will alert any nearby Probes, which will come to attack. The excited one said.

We would like for you to leave at the earliest opportunity. We have received reports that the half-spawn may be preparing to activate an artifact to call in more Probes. The gruff one says, seeming unsure as he mentions the report. We've also heard that... He lowers his voice, making sure that the now-dispersing crowd could not hear. That these artifacts could be powerful enough to bring in an actual Eldrazi. He says, shivering at the thought.

Later that evening...

The outer wall of the compound is behind a small barricade of trees that blocks the road. Behind it are 50 feet of cleared space in front of a 15 foot tall wall. The wall has torches set in it, and there is light coming from behind the barricade. I'm assuming that you take measures to keep from being seen?

Here's a map of the area:

The line at 4 is is the wall, the one at 13 is the barricade. There don't seem to be people actively looking from the barricade, and the wall doesn't seem to have anyone on it.

The barbarian will search the ground for tracks, to see if anyone (or anything) has come near the place recently.

(sorry, forgot to make the roll) [roll0]

Nice roll.

You find that the road is fairly well traveled-the placement of the tracks indicate patrols. The woods are oddly lacking in tracks, as if all of the animals had been chased away...

Emily looked around, cautiously.

Aeon, being similarly cautious, hefted the runestaff he carries and looked around as well.

Alright, you notice that the barricade has nothing behind it, or whatever is behind it is dead, or a log.

Suddenly, a shrieking noise splits the air and an inhuman cry screams something. A wave of energy washes over the area, leaving everything crackling with power for a moment before fading. The compound is suffused in a purplish haze, and the air seems to pulse with power.

What now?

Emily stood closer to Aeon, looking around quickly.

Deaspore will move ahead of the party, towards the noise, shouting his challenge to it, but not going into a rage yet. He hopes to dissuade it's assault by answering it's challenge.

...Okay, then. Not expecting that.

Your challenge goes unanswered, whatever this thing is, it seems to be, you know, in the compound(sorry if I was unclear), and shouting at a noise does not appear to be effective. The nearby trees are totally quivering in their roots, though.

...I thought that you meant that the sound was coming from the woods... in that case, however, he goes and charges down a nearby door, and attempts to break it open.
[roll0] +2 for the charge, if you would allow that.

Alright, then.

Instead of yelling at the noise, you either charge all the way(80 ft) to the wall of the compound or you run up and smash a pile of wood with some logs-in-clothes behind it. Your choice, really.

And sure, +2 from charge.

I run the 80ft and bust down the door. Fun times. So, what do I find?

Alright, then. You smash down a wooden door, revealing a compound with several buildings and a small pyramid with an entrance tunnel leading into darkness on one side. The buildings are all wood, and fairly small. There is a thick, purple mist in the air, and you can see several humanoid figures turning, pointing and shouting.

I think we should wait for the others before going any further.

Emily runs after him, rather curious of what it might be.

So you know, I'm away this weekend. :/
