There are many a tale of great heroes and their exploits, from fighting vile monsters and unlocking forgotten secrets. They wield weapons of amazing power, practice lost arts and warp reality to their whims. They battle foes of both brutal power and subtle workings, creating legends that inspire many to their example and shine hope upon the multiverse.

...This isn't one of those tales. This tale begins in the small country village of Meadowbrook, an unassuming small town of nearly 50, known for their plush grazing lands, which support the many small herds of goats and sheep. The village, residing in the southwest of the country of Darham, stands on a trade road and is set in the plains between the Wild Woods, that serves as a natural barrier separating Darham from its neighboring countries, and the beginning of rolling hills that eventually rise into the Verdant Peaks, many leagues away.

The leaves are beginning to turn from greens into many shades of reds and browns as Meadowbrook celebrates the end of the harvest season with a week-long festival, when the traders come through on their way south for the winter trading season. It is the third night of the festival with the moon on its ascent across the sky. The village is festooned with torches burning gaily and stalls hawking drinks and roasted goat fresh from the spit. The central bonfire is just on its way into burning for the later folk dances when a scream breaks through the cheer:

Andrea!?! Andrea, where are you!?!? cries out a distraught elven woman dressed in finery unseen in the village. Teary-eyed, she searches about fervently, drawing stray glances that she seems to not see. The other villagers seem to go back to their cups and talks, not seeming to want to get involved with an obvious foreigner.

Andrea!?! Andrea, where are you?!?!
Someone who you recognize as Tharivol Nightbreeze, on of three village's three half-elves, walks over to her, carrying his orange juice with him.
"Excuse me miss, but who is this 'Andrea' person you are seeking? Maybe could I assist you in finding them?"
He takes a sip of his orange juice and waits for her response.

Aharon Koheim walked through the crowd, somehow being there and yet being apart from the festivities. He laughed and joked with the other villagers, relieved as they were to have brought in the harvest on time for another year. Lack of food might not be a problem for the Church itself, but when it hit the village the priests felt it, scattering into the village to give what food they could.

In his meandering around the village, he found himself next to the main pyre, and decided to let the heat of it warm him and rid his bones of the autumn chill. He stared into the flames, doing his best to look contemplative, hoping the villagers would avoid bothering him if t looked like he was pondering something. Their superstition when it came to religion was a nice way to avoid unnecessary conversation...

"Andrea!?! Andrea, where are you!?!?"

...great. The priest-in-training turned towards the cries and spotted the panicked Elf, and sensing that this was probably going to involve him somehow. Elves weren't really that much of an unknown to Aharon, as they occasionally made their way to the Church as they traveled with... adventurers, seeking advice, jobs, and places to rest.

Which the Church provided.

He approached the Elven woman, casting glances around to see if he could spot whoever she was looking for.
"Excuse me, ma'am. On behalf of the Church of Pelor, can I help you?"

Judah Bezalel sat before the main pyre, lost in thought. When was he going to leave? Where would he go? Would he tell his family, or simply disappear? Was this whole plan just a childish fantasy from the start? He could still barely believe his power...

He was roused from his thoughts by the shouting of the elven woman. A bit sick of contemplating his future and certainly bored enough of the festivities, he decided he might as well investigate.

By the time he had circumnavigated the great fire, a small group had already come to the aid of the distressed woman. Nevertheless, he approached. She looked wealthy enough; perhaps there was a reward to be had for finding this "Andrea".

"Is there a problem, madam?'

Phetyr looked up when he heard the scream, the brush he was using to groom his mule and lifelong companion, Keith, dropping from his hand to dangle by its cord at his wrist. He was well outside the celebration's radius, just close enough to get some vicarious pleasure from the smells and sounds of the festival without being a burden or a mooch.

"Y'all know what that means, Keith? They's gonna need our help, I reckon," he told the mule, brushing his own dark hair back as he spoke. "Keith, heel."

With that, he trotted off at a long-legged trot, Keith jangling behind him under the pack saddle.

Looking up at the small crowd she had gathered, the elven woman tries to compose herself by wiping tears from her eyes as she says Oh, have you seen Andrea, my daughter? Sh-she...she was right here a moment ago...I only looked away at some merchandise for but a moment and...*sniff* and...

She breaks back into tears and grips onto Aharon's tunic as shouts come from among the crowd. The crowd parting to allow them to pass, the local Constable, Ambrose Nightbreeze, and one of his deputies makes his way over.
Scanning the small cluster and noting his son, the Constable turns and asks Tharivol, what's going on here?

Aharon puts one hand on the Elven woman's shoulder, before speaking to her in his best 'priestly' voice.

"Don't fret, ma'am. Elves are pretty rare in Meadowbrook, she'll be found."

As the Constable muscles his way into the scene, he's the first to respond, if in a slightly blunt manner.

"This woman has lost her daughter. I'm going to take her to the Church, Brother Martian can comfort her better than I can.

Looking over towards the weeping woman and Aharon, Ambrose raises a hand to his chin and strokes his blond goatee in thought. Hmm, very well, that may be for the best...Acolyte Aharon, right?

Looking over to his son and the other two in the cluster, he muses a bit more before saying, And I suppose you three would be willing to help with the search, eh? I know my boy here, enthusiastic as he may be, gathered more of my good looks than of his mother's wit, so he'll need assistance in finding this young'un.

Turning from them, Ambrose raises his voice and says I know I cannot enjoy an ale knowing a young child lost. Any more among you willing to assist the search?

"Sir, can I ask you to tell anybody who finds something to go to the Church?"

After the Constable responds, Aharon leads the Elf through the crowd, leading her towards the Church and what would probably be a mug of soup and some bread, along with a few kind words.

"Come on, ma'am, we'll wait for her at the Church. Pelor will guide her to us."

The words meant little to him, but he knew what they meant to others.

"Finally, something to break the endless monotony. A missing elf girl... perhaps I may be of use." Lavi says to himself as he puts down his mug. He stands up from his empty table at the edge of the festivities and quickly makes his way through the crowd toward the small gathering near the pyre.

"Is there any way that I might be of service?" Lavi asks the Constable. "I had heard that an elf child went missing."

Feldwick kicked his stubborn mule. The damn creature has had a lazy streak ever since he got it, and he was forced to push it along all the way to the nearby town and back. He had sold another lot of weaponry and now returned to the thorp with a brand new goat in tow. The goat was far less lazy than the mule, and Feldwick momentarily entertained the thought of having the mule ride the goat until they got home.
Nearing his dwelling, Feldwick sees the commotion - a number of the peasants had gathered in the street, and seem to be talking animatedly about something. Tying the animals to his fencepost (as the fence had gotten demolished by a stray flock of sheep not long ago and Feldwick had not had time to repair it) Feldwick made his way to the commotion.
The constable was here! This was something, all right. On the mention of a search, Feldwick's eyes open wide. If wild animals had dragged someone off, he would be needed to provide a means to drive them out, and that meant heavy work so soon after his tiring trip. Better straighten things out.
"What seems to be the matter, Constable?" Feldwick asks loudly. "I sure hope that nothing bad happened while I was gone."

I can most certainly have any information or the girl herself sent to the Shrine. Make sure to let Brother Martian know, perhaps he has some insight into the matter.

Maybe my skills can be of use... comes another voice, this one of a half-orc dressed in furs of various animals as he comes to join the others.

Turning to see 3 new arrivals, Ambrose slaps his fist.

Good, we should be able to find the lass in no time! Good to have your skills as well, Tok, we could use another experienced woodsman.

Putting his hands on his hips, he continues.

I think it best we divide up in groups of 2 to cover the village and surroundings, as Judah has excellently suggested. He nods. Slapping a hand on his deputy's shoulder, Ambrose continues Myself and Alon will cover the square here and see if anyone saw the little girl. Tharivol and Phetyr, you can check among the children for her, as well about the merchant wagons. Judah and, oh, Tok, you can check out the southwestern end of the village, see if you can find anything. You other two, Feldwick and...Lavi, is it? You can look the northerneastern end of town and along the the trade road. Let's get to it!

"Once I get you to the church, ma'am, I'll be sure to search for her myself. Don't worry, Meadowbrook is a nice town, she won't come to harm by the hand of anyone here."

You lead the grieving woman to the Shrine of the Eclipsed Star, which stands on a hill overlooking the town and trade road on the northern end of town, defining where Meadowbrook ends on that side. As you approach the shrine, you notice once again the symbol above the doorway to the old building, that of a golden star half shrouded by a silver moon. The only lights you notice are the torches around the doorway and the hint of light coming from the shuttered windows of the priest's quarters on the eastern side of the building.

What a strange shrine you have, Acolyte Aharon. I-I've never seen such a symbol on a house of the Shining One before... the elven woman whispers in reverence.

Opening the door, Brother Martin is sitting at his desk, garbed in his usual clerical vestments of white and yellow, bound at the waist by a simple sash of goldenrod, denoting his rank as keeper of the Shrine. The elven woman puts a finger to put some stray hairs behind her ear before performing a curtsy that seems long practiced to perfection. A pleasure to meet you, Brother Martin. My name is Selena Amdethdre, daughter of Tahlanual Amdethdre, Prince of House Amdethdre.
Brother Martin's eyes widen slightly at this before quickly getting out of his chair a little uncouthly.
Ah, I meant no disrespect, Lady Selena. As small as Meadowbrook is, I've seem to forgotten my manners, for which I apologize. He makes a quick slight glare towards Aharon before continuing. Allow me to give you a seat and perhaps some tea while we allow the search parties to find your daughter?
He pulls out his chair and offers it to Selena and, while she is being seated, Brother Martin looks towards you and darts his eyes towards the door, presumably toward the kitchen.

Tharivol and Phetyr:
You quickly find the only group of children, playing off among the merchant wagons. They are a mix of the three local human children, little Ahava and Adina, twin girls of 8 winters, and Roi, a twiggy young man who has seen 12 winters, who are enjoying some game involving throwing rocks at various targets that was apparently taught to them by the halfling gypsy children that came for the festival with their family.

Lavi and Feldwick:
You search about the northern part of town in a roundabout matter, searching every nook and cranny. Not many people about, though you do notice Aharon and the elven lady he's escorting taking the road up the hill that marks the northern edge of Meadowbrook, upon which the Shrine of the Eclipsed Star stands.

After 10 minutes of searching, you are about to give up the search and head back to see if anybody else found anything when you notice some unusual tracks to the west of Shrine Hill. They appear to be small, perhaps halfling-sized. Neither of you being accomplished trackers (or really trackers at all), you can't tell how many of them there were but you do notice they seem to have been dragging a large bag, which smoothed out the dirt it was dragged over.

Yeesh, so many spoilers. @_@

Was Andrea that little elven girl? I think I may have seen her earlier. What's it worth to you?
He reaches out his palm expectantly.

Lavi & Feldwick:
Trying to follow the tracks in the twilight while also keeping an eye and ear out and stay hidden is hardly an easy task, especially apparently for Lavi, who takes hiding to mean dashing across wide open spaces from hiding place to hiding place and looking around wildly at every hiding place he can think of. The heavy breathing from all the mad dashes he's making doesn't seem to be deterring him in the slightest in his efforts.
Feldwick, on the other hand, is more methodical in his stealth efforts. Though untrained, he makes a decent effort of moving with the shadows of trees gently waving in the wind and is helped in his efforts to be quiet by Lavi's antics making any of his sounds almost inconsequential.
Keeping an eye out for the tracks, they seem to be heading to the west and out of town. You follow them to the edge of town, where you find they stop at some wheel ruts, which seem seem to continue west. Instead of the hoof prints you also expected, they seem to have been some kind of large dogs' prints instead.

OOC: I'm going to change your initial track spotting time, so there isn't too much time dilation with the other groups. So, that means getting to the trail in the first place is 10 minutes and to this point is 20 minutes or so, total.

Hmm, there is not much to be done at the Shrine at the moment. In any case, I believe it would be best to put some of Pelor's teachings to use and go forth to help. I expect to not see you unless Andrea is with you to be safely returned to her mother, am I clear?
Brother Martin takes the tray from you and brings it over to his desk, where he serves Lady Selena her cup of tea.

Tharivol and Phetyr:
Roi's jaw drops open in astoundment at the windfall he gained before quickly regaining his composure and closing his fist quickly around the coins, to ensure Tharivol doesn't take them back.
Er..uh..Yeah, I saw the little elven girl. Her Ma was looking at some silverwork when some short guy wrapped up tight in grey cloth offered Andrea some sweets and she toddled off with 'im. I didn't see where they went, as they went between stalls but I think they were headed out towards the west end of town, out by Shrine Hill.
Ahava and Adina get a pouty look on their identical faces.
Aww! But we wanna play Seek and Hide, too! Do you promise to come back and play?
They both hold out their small pinkies to you.

Feldwick and Lavi:
Itty bit tracks and a cart pulled by a wolf? That's...rather strange, innit? Well, the others haven't got back yet but if you could at least go get Tok, he may be able to tell us some more about these tracks, being an experienced tracker and all. Especially if we wanna follow them out of town, like they seem to be already. I sent Tok with Judah towards the General Store.

She's who?!?
Ambrose looks a bit aghast at the implications of this.
This is perhaps more than what it seems, then. We should be finding this little girl but fast. Nobles bring nothing but trouble if they're not happy. Aharon, don't you be telling this to the others, they got enough on their plates just thinking it's a lost little girl they're looking for without worrying about the implications of what this could bring to the village. I'll take care of the backwash of this here, you just focus on getting the search party going and catching up to whoever.
Ambrose looks about quickly to see if anyone else overheard their conversation and goes off into the crowd, grabbing Alon on his way before getting lost from view.
Judah:
You don't recall much about goblins, though you do know they aren't exactly local, as the plains don't make ideal goblin burrows.
I'm not for knowing the mind of a goblin, though I do know that, combined with these footprints, they're the only beings I know that would use wolves to pull their carts about. Where they got the cart, who knows.
Tok looks up from the tracks towards Tharivol.
You say Roi saw a possible goblin take Andrea, eh? That's just another fact that makes me think this isn't just some random raid.

Judging by the direction of the tracks, I would definitely say they're headed toward the Wild Wood. By judging the way the wolf foot prints are close together, that tells me they're from a small section of the Woods called the Tangle, from the massive webs enveloping many of the paths and trees.

As Ambrose walked away, Aharon looked around at the other villagers. Maybe she was an outsider, but they could put more effort into help look for her. This was a good deed, right? And they claimed to be good people. So, why were only a few actually doing anything?

He stood up on a low wall, and shouted for their attention. "People! listen up, listen up!" Once he's sure he's got the attention of many villagers, he pours on the rhetoric. He wasn't a public speaker, but Godsdammit, he was a priest.

"A young girl has gone missing, and many of you, if not all of you, already know this. So why are only a dozen people actually out looking for her?"
He looked around at the faces of the villagers with a fire in his eyes. "Finding this girl, and reuniting her with her mother? This is a Good deed. And I know all of you, and you all claim to be Good people at heart. So please, leave the festival for now, it can wait, and it happens once a year without fail. Finding this missing girl is much more important than an annual celebration, no matter the circumstances."
He paused.
"So go, all of you, spread out and help us find this girl. Spread out as far and wide as you can go, take food and water, and blankets and torches for when it gets cold and dark tonight. So, go!"

Also, should we have gone by our houses to grab gear? Lavi carries his stuff around with him at all times, but I'm not sure about others.

IC: "The Tangle? I always stayed away from that place when I was hunting. I heard that there were spiders bigger than a man in there. Could be dangerous. Could be fun." Lavi says. "Tok, can you estimate how far away the creatures have gotten since these tracks were made?"

The villagers look initially dumbfounded, then some look sheepish and ashamed at their inaction. Some of the village women start taking drinks from the men and the men start making torches out of the bonfire and splitting up into groups and head off in all directions from the village center.
Hmm, these tracks are still somewhat fresh, so they've only been gone for an hour at most.
Looking over at Tharivol, Tok raises an eyebrow.

Many things hide in the night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3w2OCylUTU), fearing the light of day and what it reveals. Secrets and truths, dangers and mysteries. Human and demihuman alike learned long ago to respect and fear what the setting of the sun brings forth into the world. They've learned to keep a watch for what lurks in the dusk, to bar their doors against the unseen and ensure a flame burns through the night to keep the darkness at bay.

Not many would willingly venture into the shadowy unknown but that is just happening as we draw the curtain upon a small party venturing into the night. Torches lit and what weapons available at the ready, you slowly progress, Tok keeping an eye on the trail. You venture through the plains, trees looming out of the darkness here and there, the cries of hunting creatures coming from the night.

You are approaching one such copse of trees that the trail leads past when a blood curdling pair of howls break the night. Tok quickly pulls out one of his spears and takes up a throwing stance, ready to impale the first threat he sees. Ready yourselves! They've spotted us!

THEM 1(The Hidden Evil Minions): 16
Phetyr: 10
THEM 2: 8
Lavi: 7+

Tok: 7-

So, basically, Judah, Aldren and Aharon (in whatever order), THEM 1, Phetyr, THEM 2 and then Lavi, Tharivol and Tok (in whatever order).

Also, Rabbler, you haven't placed yourself on the map (link reposted for convenience for less scrolling: http://www.editgrid.com/user/cieyrin/HaBnM_Ep_2%3A_A_Night_Ambush)

Finally, Judah, your move. I'm assuming the group is using torches, though not sure whose carrying one, given the preponderance of two-handed weapons and Tok having darkvision obviating his need for a light source.

It's a cloudy night, with some moonlight when it's not covered by the clouds. The copse of trees ahead is pretty dark, the shadows of the trees making it nearly pitch in there.

((I'm confused, you moved and attempted to slime a goblin here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=9200862&postcount=110). How's that not your 1st round action? :smallconfused:

@Xavez: Lavi's action before was for the 1st round, not the 2nd. Your action 1st round was I assumed to be the 5 ft you made around Tok here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=9170108&postcount=102). If you want to finish that action, do something not involving movement, given taking a 5 ft precludes further movement, at least of the normal type.))

The slingstone goes wide, though it throws the rider's aim off as well. He curses and wheels back into the woods. As he disappears, another wolf comes out and charges towards Lavi!

((Just realized I wasn't taking Mounted Archery penalties into account like I was supposed to for double moves. Shouldn't affect the previous 2 rolls, as 16 is probably still a hit on poor Lavi and the more recent shot is still a miss.))

Observer notesRen moves back to M7, out of sight of the PCs again.
The goblins make their way around the tree and try to go for the others, giving the spiders a wide berth. They all draw javelins as they move and chuck them towards the approaching peasants, 2 at Phetyr and one at Lavi!
