View Full Version : [D20 Modern] Seeking Advice on a Character Build

I'm playing in a D20 Modern Campaign being run by a friend of mine. This is only the second or third time I've had a chance to play D20M despite having owned the book for years now, and I was hoping for some advice. Bear in mind that I am pretty much limited to the books I already have, since expanding my library isn't in the budget any time soon, so any advice should be kept PRETTY MUCH to the canon WOTC library. I do have a couple of 3rd party books -- Blood & Guts Modern Military (of questionable use), and Charles Ryans D20 Ultramodern Firearms (of significantly greater use).

Because it's a modern military campaign, and I have never been IN the military, advice from veterans who are also gamers would be particularly appreciated.

A little about the setting:

We're playing a modern Merc unit, specializing in CT and anti-piracy work. It's cinematic, but non-fantasy -- no FX, no Psionics, no shadow creatures, etc. The characters have access to a pretty impressive arsenal, but it's not all about shoot-em-ups, there's plenty of out-of-combat roleplaying. But the characters ARE supposed to be well-trained and seasoned operators. The character generation was a high level form of dice rolling, so they're pretty buff characters.

About my character:

I am playing a former US Navy SEAL who is the squad's point man. He's a CQB and forced entry specialist, first guy in, the one who is the eyes and ears as well as the tip of the spear for the team. His top 3 Ability scores are 18's in INT (skill monkey) and WIS (Spot checks) and a 17 in DEX.

So far, he's at level 4, and those 4 levels have been played and are committed to. He's a Fast 3/Infiltrator 1. Fast talents are Evasion and Uncanny Dodge 1. Feats are Armor Prof. (Light), Improved Initiative, Personal Firearms Prof., Advanced Firearms Prof., and Burst Fire. He's maxed out for his level in the following skills: Balance; Climb; Move Silently; Sleight of Hand; Swim; and Tumble, he also has ranks in Demolitions, Disable Device, Escape Artist, Hide (6 ranks)

This is what I have planned, but am open to suggestions: I intend to keep him mostly in the Infiltrator Advanced Class, though I'm considering a 1-level dip into Gunslinger for the Close Combat Shot feature. Feats I have planned to take for him include Alertness, Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Shot on the Run, and one (or possible two from Ultramodern Firearms: Reactive Shooter; and (maybe) High Ready.
